The Inspector and Mrs. Jeffries
The Inspector and Mrs. Jeffries | Emily Brightwell
15 posts | 16 read | 9 to read
As Inspector Witherspoon's dedicated housekeeper, Mrs. Jeffries keeps things running smoothly and is quite clever at putting Witherspoon on the right track in case after case. In fact, Mrs. Jeffries' polished detective skills prove once again that behind every great man, there's a great woman.

Here are my picks for #CloakandDaggerChristmas readathon. It's a mixture of classic, Canadian, and series I have started. We'll see. 🤷‍♀️
🗡️Insp. Bucket (Victorian mystery): The Inspector & Mrs. Jefferies
🗡️Insp. Gamache (small town): The Suspect 🇨🇦
🗡️Tommy & Tuppence (duo): The Unquiet Dead 🇨🇦
🗡️Agatha Raisin (amateur sleuth): Jane & The Twelve Days of Christmas

Hercule Poirot (golden age): Daughter of Time
👇

merelybookish 🗡️ Det. Galileo (translated: Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead 🗡️ Kinsey Malone (P.I.): A is for Alibi 🗡️ Flavia de Luce (children): The Red Herring Without Mustard 🗡️ Columbo (tv): TBD 2y
quietjenn Ah, these look fun. Tempted to jump in on this challenge. Mysteries are my favorite and I feel like I haven't been reading them much lately. We'll see! 2y
merelybookish @quietjenn Ah well, please do! I don't expect I'll read all of these but it's been fun coming up with picks for each prompt! Maybe mysteries at Xmas will become my things 2y

Ruthiella Great list! I loved the Flavia de Luce series. The mysteries themselves are not exceptional but I love the characters and setting. I also enjoyed the Grafton books. And they are pretty short page turners. The Daughter of Time is great. My favorite Tey mystery. 2y
merelybookish @Ruthiella Thanks! I figured it was safe to try Grafton. She seems to have endured. 🙂 And I have read the first 2 Flavias and agree that the characters are fun! 2y
Ruthiella @merelybookish One of the cool things about that Alphabet mysteries is that Grafton kept it all set in the ‘80s throughout the whole series. I really like that consistency and it keeps things logical re: lack of cell phone or internet, etc. 2y
batsy Fun! And yes, nodding along to what @Ruthiella said about the Tey and the Flavia series. I enjoy the Jane Austen mysteries too, but felt the early books were better. I'm trying to plan my books for the challenge; might be having too much fun doing "research"... 2y
merelybookish @batsy Oh I spent hours and eventually had to make myself stop. So many possibilities! And thanks for the heads up on the Jane Austen mystery. I haven't read any but was drawn to the Xmasy title. Maybe I'll go back to one of the earlier ones. Please tag me if/when you share your picks. 🙂 2y
rubyslippersreads @quietjenn I‘m tempted too. 😊 2y
rubyslippersreads @batsy Even though it‘s not “Christmassy,” I‘m tempted to read 2y
rubyslippersreads @merelybookish @Ruthiella ❤️❤️❤️ Sue Grafton. My BFF and I were in a coffee shop when we heard she‘d died, and we both started crying. 😢 2y
merelybookish @rubyslippersreads Yes, do join! It's fun to make the list. And does that mean you've read all the alphabet murders? 2y
Ruthiella @rubyslippersreads I was sad to hear she died too, and one book short of completing the alphabet. I also love that her inspiration to write the series was her idly thinking of ways to kill her ex-husband. 😂 2y
merelybookish @Ruthiella That's hilarious! 😂 2y
quietjenn @Ruthiella 😆 if I knew that, is forgotten it! I haven't read these since I got really into them in high school and think I stopped wherever the series was at that time. Worth asking to the proverbial list. 2y
batsy @rubyslippersreads I haven't read that one yet and it's a nice thematic crossover with our most recent &#furrowedmiddlebrowclub read! 🙂 2y
rubyslippersreads @merelybookish Believe it or not, I‘m only up to Q. 😄 2y

Visited Pat Conroy‘s grave; it‘s in a tiny little cemetery. People have left all kinds of things there — a lot of pens and pencils, a ceramic turtle, and a baseball among them.

#bookfitnesschallenge #bfc2 Week 3 checkin
Walking = 16.02 miles (6 of those were today)
Audiobooks finished = 4
Eating = okay; some days were better than others.
Rest of goals = did not meet because of vacation.

rockpools Still looking beautiful there! Good job on keeping up the walking during vacations - and 🌟🌟🌟 on the books. 5y
KathyWheeler In case you can‘t read it, the quote on Conroy‘s gravestone is “My wound is geography. It is also my anchorage; my port of call.” From 5y

KathyWheeler @RachelO Thanks! I‘m a little proud of myself over the walking. 😊 The books were easy because we‘re driving such long distances. 5y
cobwebmoth Great job, especially since you were on vacation! 5y
wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌🏻 A fantastic week! 🎉 it‘s hard to stick to routines when you‘re away. And that‘s okay. Because you met one very important goal—mental health. Vacations and get always are essential to resetting ourselves. So definitely celebrate that! 5y
cewilf Wow, 6 miles in one day!! That‘s awesome. Great week! 5y
Megabooks Six miles in one day! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 I hope your vacation was wonderful! 5y
Lady_Tigana_20 We did a trip to Beaufort years ago. We stayed on Harbor Island. I found his dad‘s grave. My husband thought I was nuts. 😂 I definitely want to go back and find Pat‘s grave. 5y
KathyWheeler @Lady_Tigana_20 It‘s in a little tiny cemetery on St. Helena Island — St. Helena Memorial Gardens. It‘s a bit out of the way too. 5y
KathyWheeler @wanderinglynn I love the idea that I‘m resetting myself with this vacation. It‘s been really great! 5y
KathyWheeler @Megabooks It‘s been so good! 5y
KathyWheeler @cewilf Thanks! I watched your jump. Loved it. ❤️ 5y
cewilf @kathywheeler thank you!! I‘m so close!!! And hate falling that hard haha 5y
KathyWheeler @cewilf you can do it! I just love to watch skaters. 5y
Emilymdxn Great week! And 6 miles of walking in a day is a loooooot well done! 5y
KathyWheeler @Emilymdxn thanks! The Gulf Coast beaches, where I live, are soft and, therefore, hard to walk on; these SC beaches, however, are hard-packed and easy to walk on. I‘d gone 2 miles before I even knew it! 5y

Light-hearted and entertaining, this first installment in the Mrs. Jeffries mystery series introduces us to Inspector Witherspoon and his domestic staff. Unbeknownst to him, his housekeeper, maid, cook, coachman and footman, assist him in gathering information for his cases and help put him on the right track.
In this one, they investigate to discover why a respectable doctor was poisoned - and by whom.

ferskner Yay I'm glad you got a good one! 5y
mabell @ferskner Yes, and I love that it is a series! It‘s so nice to continue with familiar characters 😊 5y
AmyReadsAlot @mabell by book 4 it will feel a little formulaic I warn you but it pushes through and keeps improving. 5y
mabell @GenreMinxReviews I‘m almost through book 2, so I‘ll be to book 4 in no time 😆 Thank you for the tip! 5y

Mr. Witherspoon is a dim detective. Mrs Jeffries is a sly housekeeper. He never realizes she feeds him the clues he needs to solve the case (clues from info gathered by the other servants). This was a fun cozy mystery.

Just started listening to this. I think I'm going to enjoy it a lot.

CampbellTaraL I love stories like this written from the non traditional protagonist's perspective. Mrs. Hudson (Sherlock)! Etta Candy (Wonder Woman)! Hope this one stands out too. 6y
