Summer has a magic all its own in Elizabeth Enright's beloved stories about two children and their discovery of a ghostly lakeside resort. I reread this book and it‘s sequel most summers, but I missed last year. Soooo sweet. Like my Eddy Charcoal. She‘s happy we got power back tonight after two days too. Even with the big generator it‘s a pain. And it‘s happening more; the planet is convulsing. But enough of that, look at that sweet face! And read a good book. 🧡

Chrissyreadit Love this book and sequel too! 1y

4 stars ⭐️
This was one of my favorite books in middle school, and let me say, it still holds up! I reread it to be able to write my grad school application on it, and I'm so glad I did. I love how Enright weaves together themes of nature, time, humanity, and kindness. The pair of children with the pair of elderly siblings creates a fascinating parallel that really allows Enright's themes to shine.

I love this book whole-heartedly. I first read it in the early 70s, more than likely, as a child. The picture is of my original edition, from the 1957 printing! It‘s a bit worse for the wear. I bought a new set, including the sequel, which I did not own or read originally, in the 90s. I gave *that* set to my bookworm nephew Donovan, then bought the set I still own, printed in 2000. Ahhhh, if you‘ve never read it I can‘t recommend it enough.

MittenGirlPeach I read the set every summer, and this month I added the two books to the end of my #BookSpinBingo card, so spaces 20-25 are filled as well. Look at the price info top right! The sweetness and descriptive writing in these books fill me with joy. First book marked off my Bingo card! @TheAromaofBooks 3y
TheAromaofBooks I love these books, too!! I always dreamed of my family moving into an old rambling house with secret attics & stairways, so I was more than a little jealous of their discovery of basically an entire abandoned village! 3y
MittenGirlPeach @TheAromaofBooks I knew you would have read these! I totally agree; I dreamed of finding a place just like Gone Away! 3y
Chrissyreadit Yes!! I loved these books so much and shared them with my daughter who counts them as a favorite too! 3y

Read this and you will daydream forever about spending a summer rambling around a long lost resort town full of abandoned Victorian mansions. Really enjoyed returning to this childhood favorite, which remains just as charming as ever.

crhealey I haven‘t thought about this book in years! I loved it too! 4y

I didn't read this when I was a kid, but I went through a stage in my early 20s that reignited my love of children's lit & made me want to keep/collect all of the children's classics. It's also when I began to discover the variety & depth of middle-grade fiction. But my early 20s was awhile ago, so there is some truth to the matter when I say that I first read this sweet story when I was "young". ? #goneaway #WinterWonderland @TrishB @Cinfhen

JennyM Lol...I was ‘young‘ and in my 20s a long time ago. I like to think of myself as either a wine or cheese...getting better with age 🤣 6y
batsy @JennyM Love that! I think between all of us who are no longer, er, "young", we make a tasty cheese platter ??? 6y
JennyM @batsy I‘ll drink to that 😘 6y

erzascarletbookgasm 😄 at least you did all that in your 20s, albeit it was ‘awhile‘ ago..lol. I‘ve only recently discovered I enjoyed a lot of middle grade books as compared to YA books. 6y
TrishB These are obviously much loved. I‘m definitely in the like where my 20s were a long time ago! 6y
Sace You've hit the nail on the head with "depth" I was well beyond my 20s when I started reading more middle grade books and I've been surprised by it. Then again, that depth may be lost in the intended age group ? 6y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm Never too late to discover the pleasures of middle grade fic 😊❤️ 6y
batsy @RestlessFickleBookHoarder Haha! But there's also a chance that some of that depth subconsciously seeps in at that age? One hopes 😆🤞🏽 6y
Aimeesue The Aiken books caught my eye first, so then I thought “It‘s The LOST Lake! Why is the title different?” 😂Hadn‘t heard of this one, but I love The Wolves Chronicles. Joan Aiken is one of my favorite authors. 6y
batsy @Aimeesue Ahaha 😆 I love it so much, as well! Aiken ❤️ 6y
merelybookish I really came to love middle grade fiction in my 30s, and that is starting to feel young. 😬 6y
batsy @merelybookish 😂❤️ 6y
Centique Anyone who loves Enright and Aiken is my people. It‘s so great to see so many of us! 🙃🙂 Did you also love The Saturdays by Enright? 6y
batsy @Centique Yay! 💕 And yes, I did! It's on that shelf behind Gone-Away Lake :) Now I just want to stop what I'm reading and read all of the children's books 😆 6y
rubyslippersreads I spy The Sherwood Ring and The Perilous Gard. 😊 6y
Lindy I read this for the first time when I was 56. 👍 6y
batsy @rubyslippersreads 😊 Love those books 💜 6y
batsy @Lindy That's great. I love a well-written children's book more and more as I get older 💜 6y

[Photo is of the spaceship on the barbecue at the farm where I grew up. It has a vacuum cleaner motor and coloured lights inside, but it no longer works. Built as a 1967 ?? Centennial project to go with the flying saucer landing pad in nearby St Paul, Alberta.]

Delightful middle grade fiction from the mid-20th century. Aside from a little gender role stereotyping, it stands the test of time and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to modern children. Would be an excellent family read-aloud.

"There was a coreopsis flower in his buttonhole."
This book was published in 1957. I like to think that children at that time would have been familiar with this word and the flower. A different vocabulary than we come across in modern children's literature.

christineandbooks I love this book... Have you read the sequel? It's pretty good too. 8y
Lindy @christineandbooks This is my first reading and I'm totally charmed. I haven't read the sequel and I'm glad to know it's also good. Thanks! 8y

It was hot & sunny up there, & they disturbed a large community of ants; not the biting kind, luckily, though they did turn out to be the kind that get into sandwiches, as they soon discovered.
"They don't bother me any," Julian said with his mouth full. "I bet I've eaten 100,000 ants in my time."
"It's them I'm thinking about," Portia told him. "What a horrible death!" And she picked as many out of her sandwich as she could & helped them escape.

Baby-Belle and I ran through the flower garden, where all the hollyhocks had paper blossoms. (Mrs Brace-Gideon would not stand for having her hollyhocks stop blooming; she made new crepe paper flowers for them and stuck them on with glue.)

Lacythebookworm I suppose that is a good way to have flowers year round! 🌸🌺😊 8y
Lindy @Lacythebookworm My grandmother had a simpler method. She stuck plastic flowers in among her real ones, so she always had colour. 😀 8y
Hobbinol Crepe paper flowers are very drought resistant, but tend to lose their color in the rain. I knew a woman who was so obsessed with her lawn she spray painted it bright green each winter. 8y

Lindy @Hobbinol The things people do, eh? 8y
Suet624 @Hobbinol say what???? 8y
Hobbinol @Suet624 Yep. It's true. She was a crazy old lady. Totally wigged out about her lawn. She would yell if kids got in her yard, even to fetch a ball. When a young woman with questionable morals moved into her neighborhood, she didn't want her to walk her dog by the house because she was afraid her lawn would catch AIDS from the dog! When the yard-men came to mow, she made them wash the blades of their mower before cutting her grass! Crazy! 8y
Suet624 @Hobbinol holy cow. Can you imagine the inside of her head? What goes on in there? How did she become this way? I have so many questions. Washing the mower blades. Good lord. 8y
Lindy @Hobbinol @Suet624 If I read about this painted-grass woman in a novel, it would stretch credibility. People are so weird. 8y

"What have you got in your mouth?" was the first thing Julian said to Portia.
"Tooth braces," she told him, stretching the sides of her mouth to give him a better view.
"Holy Cat! When you smile, it looks just like the front of a Buick!" Julian said.

#funfridayphoto #librariansareawesome Here are two of my childhood favorites! In 6th grade, our public school librarian got me a special notebook to use as a book journal. Gone Away Lake was a book she recommended that I absolutely loved. I wrote my very first review about it. ☺️ And Sharon Creech is just solid.

Purpleness I loved both of those too! Bloomability is the closest I've ever come to reading a book about someone with my name. 8y
