A serial killer to chill your bones A psychopath more frightening than Hannibal Lecter. He has planned well. He leads two lives. In one he's just like anyone else. But in the other he is the caretaker of his family's macabre museum. Now the time has come to add to his collection. He is ready to feed his obsession, and he is on the hunt. Jakey Frith and Clara Foyle have something in common. They have what he needs. What begins is a terrifying cat-and-mouse game between the sinister collector, Jakey's father and Etta Fitzroy, a troubled detective investigating a spate of abductions. Set in London's Blackheath, Rattle by Fiona Cummins explores the seam of darkness that runs through us all; the struggle between light and shadow, redemption and revenge. It is a glimpse into the mind of a sinister psychopath. And it's also a story about not giving up hope when it seems that all hope is already lost.

As much of a horror novel as it is a procedural. We spend a LOT of time with the terrifying psychopath. Already have the second book on hand but I am chilled to the bone (no pun intended) so I may leave it for a bit. #StartASeries

Also I ordered this book 3 years ago from Book Depository because I was impatient for the U.S. publication. 😂

Rattle lit mag publishes 4 poetry books a year and this one is awesome. Loved the poems in Tales from the House of Vasquez. Made e think of poetry in a whole new way.

A strong, atmospheric debut with a villain who defies tropes. It wasn't clear at first if this thriller would take a turn for the paranormal; it didn't. Cummins embraces omniscience without making my head spin, and her multi-dimensional villain conjures empathy. A warning: the ending does something that will piss some readers off, but I can't tell you what it is without a heck of a spoiler, so, like me, you'll have to find out for yourselves.

BooksAndYarn I really enjoyed this book and its sequel 1y

Post 4/4: Here's the underside view of my rigging for tablet/e-reader holders. I had been planning to use butterfly clips, but my mom had these plastic clamps lying around, and they're so much easier to use. I clamped all but about thirty pages to the piece of wood, which makes it easier to flip pages with the two paperclips as pictured. I did make a larger holder for trade paperbacks, but it was too heavy. Click #ErgoLitsy to see the other pics.

RaimeyGallant P.S. Reading with this was a delight. No neck pain! 1y

Post 3/4: Though there are gadgets for holding books word-side down, I thought they were either too expensive or cumbersome or simply not available for purchase anymore/where I live. I decided to jigsaw a thin piece of wood & clamp a book to it. It works well at the mass market paperback size. Notice how Bruce can multitask while he reads. See the rest of my pics for this or add to the ergonomic reading convo at #ErgoLitsy

Making spooky book stacks even though I am the total opposite of a reading planner. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But the weather has been consistently gloomy and has put me in a mood.

LeahBergen I‘ve been wanting to make a spooky stack, too (although I‘ll most likely veer from it after the first read 🙄). 1y

Started this today and have had a difficult time putting it down. Nice quick, short chapters and creepy. Told from various perspectives including people close to the killer. The good news is it will release in the States in February! Really wanted a good thriller. I just hope the publishers didn‘t give away the ending by naming it a series, but I am afraid they probably did.

It was a good book to read. It did take a while to get in to. Once your passed the first 100 pages you are carried to the end. It is a brilliant story and well thought out but I didn‘t expect it to be a two part book so now I have to wait to find out what happens in the other part of the story....

On Feb. 9, I placed an order with Amazon.uk. When it wasn't here by March 1st, they sent it again. That one came three days later. Today, March 15, the original order arrived. (Really beat up) I have emailed them for instructions. As I went to set the books aside, I pulled this out from between the books. I wonder if Lily knows who her lift the flap book came from? 😁😁

Here's a little weekend book haul. I hit B&N with a coupon and Rattle came in from Book Depository. I'm really excited to read that one! I love reading fiction (and non-fic) about serial killers, even though they keep me up at night.

I already read vol 1 of The Ancient Magus' Bride. It was fantastic! I ordered vol 4 and 5 on Book Outlet. I'll pick up vol 2 and 3 at B&N next week. I also bought cute French bulldog bookclips at Target. 😄

Afternoon reading. It's almost 500 pages long, but the font is enormous, and the chapters are James Patterson-sized, so it shouldn't take very long to read. 🤘🏻🖤☠

An amazing debut; creepy and tension filled throughout. One of the most malevolent characters I've read in a long time. Rattle gives us a bright new voice onto the thriller scene.
Out on 26.01.17 - pre-order it now, you won't be disappointed.
