The Magpies
The Magpies | Mark Edwards
Meet the neighbors from hell, in the gripping thriller that reviewers and readers describe as fast-paced, chilling, and impossible to put down. When Jamie and Kirsty move into their first home together, they are full of optimism. The future, in which they plan to get married and start a family, is bright. The other residents of their building seem friendly too, including the Newtons, a married couple who welcome them to the building with open arms. But then strange things start to happen. Dead rats are left on their doorstep. They hear disturbing noises, and much worse, in the night. After Jamie's best friend is injured in a horrific accident, Jamie and Kirsty find themselves targeted by a campaign of terror. As they are driven to the edge of despair, Jamie vows to fight backbut he has no idea what he is really up against The Magpies is a gripping psychological thriller in which the monsters are not vampires or demons but the people who live next door. It is a nightmare that could happen to anyone. Praise for The Magpies Mark Edwards achieves what other writers yearn for, by creating characters that genuinely feel like real people, individuals you know personallyand then puts them into the scariest of situations so that we cannot help but suffer with them. Edwards takes the places that should feel safe and subverts them, shifting the ground beneath our feet, until we're left clinging to the book, hoping against hope for a positive conclusion. There's something deeply unsettling about The Magpiesand that's exactly as it should be. Elizabeth Haynes, author of Into the Darkest Corner The Magpies is absorbing, claustrophobic and terrifying. Read this book! Then get a top notch alarm system fitted in your house. Helen Fitzgerald, author of The Cry

Last #LMPBC Read for 2022. Here's my review.

This was an interesting premise for a psychological thriller, but it feel flat for me in a lot of ways. It didn't feel scary for me, it felt tedious to continuously read the unfortunate things that were happening to the main characters. The ending was good, if a bit sad. 3.5 Stars. Decent, Okay Read. I won't be reading the sequel.

I'll mail it out today.

This book gave me SO much anxiety and nightmares! 😬 Several times I found myself wishing I could reach through the page and just slap the crap right out of some of these characters. I was happy when it was over but I'd honestly probably read the next one in the series. Good pick, this one evoked many feelings 😅! @Maggie4483 @LoverOfLearning @rsteve388

Solid 3.5 stars here! A creepy thriller that kept me guessing!

I enjoyed the story line overall but I was hoping for a more engaging ending / polt twist to lead into the next book in the series.

The real bummer for me was how he wrote his characters. I was unable to relate to any of them personally.

Hope you enjoy it. Sending it to on to you @HeathHof #LMPBC

This is one of those books that can be enjoyable but annoying and painful at the same time. It doesn‘t have any major twists in, which the author self-declares at the end wasn‘t the type of book he was writing. The most worrying thing about this story is that it could happen! He tends to write everyday psychological thrillers and it is based on an experience he had in earlier life (but to a lesser extent). He certainly succeeded.

Bookworm04 This sounds good and it‘s Q9 on kindle store on amazon have to get it @Andrew65 (edited) 5y

Ah, a lazy Saturday. Plenty of time for a leisurely lunch and a spooky book. A happy couple moves into a flat, excited to begin their lives together. But the neighbors.... So far it vaguely reminds me of Rosemary's Baby.

revenge4porgy And there‘s the only reason I won‘t read it. I have enough horror in my own life, lol 6y

This book makes me glad my neighbours are quiet and don't bother me! This is a creepy and suspenceful psychological thriller about crazy neighbours that kept me on edge and interested from start to finish. I have had bad neighbours but luckily, not as bad as these.

I've tried to read this book twice, but I just don't like it. I don't care for the characters at all and I don't feel drawn in. It has had good reviews but I think it is just not my cup of tea... why keep reading when there are other books out there?!

I loved this book even though it petrified me slightly. So much so I had to tweet mark and he told not to worry, probably won't happen to me haha! The story is gripping and you really root for Jamie. Since reading this I have read all of Mark Edwards other books and I like that he makes a reference to a character in this in another book.

Fear lives next door. When Jamie and Kirsty move in to their first home together they are full of optimism. The future is bright. The other residents of their building seem friendly too: the horror writer & middle-aged herbalist who live upstairs, and the Newtons, a married couple who welcome them to the building with open arms. At first the two couples get on well. But then strange things start to happen...

The only thing I've achieved today is reading this book, once I'd started I couldn't stop. Totally gripped, felt like I was in the plot and I had nightmare neighbors! Good story line, good characters (even if I did want to shout at them at times) and will be reading more from this author.

Very trippy. The scariest stories are the ones that hit close to home.
