Yes, My Accent Is Real
Yes, My Accent Is Real: And Some Other Things I Haven't Told You | Kunal Nayyar
In the spirit of Mindy Kalings bestseller Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, a collection of humorous, autobiographical essays from Kunal Nayyar, best known as Raj on CBSs #1 hit comedy The Big Bang Theory. Of all the charming misfits on television, theres no doubt Raj from The Big Bang Theorythe sincere yet incurably geeky Indian-American astrophysicistranks among the misfittingest. Now, we meet the actor who is every bit as loveable as the character he plays on TV. In this revealing collection of essays written in his irreverent, hilarious, and self-deprecating voice, Kunal Nayyar traces his journey from a little boy in New Delhi who mistakes an awkward first kiss for a sacred commitment, gets nosebleeds chugging Coca-Cola to impress other students, and excels in the sport of badminton, to the confident, successful actor on the set of TVs most-watched sitcom since Friends. Going behind the scenes of The Big Bang Theory and into his personal experiences, Kunal introduces readers to the people who helped him grow, such as his James Bond-loving, mustachioed father who taught him the most important lessons in life: Treat a beggar as you would a king. There are two sides to every story. A smile goes a long way. And, when in doubt, use a spreadsheet. Kunal also walks us through his college years in Portland, where he takes his first sips of alcohol and learns to let loose with his French, 68 gentle-giant roommate, works his first-ever job for the universitys housekeeping department cleaning toilets for minimum wage, and begins a series of romantic exploits that go just about as well as they would for Raj. (That is, until he meets and marries a former Miss India in an elaborate seven-day event that we get to experience in a chapter titled My Big Fat Indian Wedding.) Full of heart, but never taking itself too seriously, this witty and often inspiring collection of underdog tales follows a young man as he traverses two continents in search of a dream, along the way transcending culture and language (and many, many embarrassing incidents) to somehow miraculously land the role of a lifetime.

Started and finished this gem on the bus Thursday and Friday.

This book is adorable! Kunal Nayyar is adorable! He‘s more like Raj than you‘d think. He‘s a little nerdy. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics He‘s awkward with women (or at least was). He had some really weird culture shock moments where he said things that he didn‘t necessarily mean or understand in the moment, but luckily he had awesome friends that let him know and loved him anyway. He related Hindi holidays with Lord of the Rings. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 2y
GingerAntics He almost had to go back to India because his visa was going to expire, but then he landed his first professional acting gig, a little show I‘m sure no one even saw called The Big Bang Theory! He‘s Raj, but even more lovable and cool! This book was a fun, delightful, funny adventure. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 2y
GingerAntics I openly laughed multiple times on the bus while listening to this (I‘m sure most of the Fargo-Moorhead area now thinks I‘m absolutely crazy). It‘s made even better because it‘s read by Kunal himself. #KunalNayyar #YesMyAccentIsReal #Raj #TBBT #audiobook #busbook 2y

BiblioLitten I think I‘ll like this one. Even though my last memoir disappointed me. 2y
GingerAntics @BiblioLitten if you liked TBBT, you‘ll enjoy this. It‘s goofy and cheery. Even the sad parts have a heartwarming spin to them. He‘s definitely not Raj, but then he‘s kind of Raj. It‘s hard to explain. 2y
BiblioLitten I loved TBBT!! Just finished rewatching Young Sheldon😄 2y
GingerAntics @BiblioLitten Young Sheldon is so much fun. I‘m starting to get worried though. George is going to have to die soon. 2y

I have never watched The Big Bang Theory, but I found this to be a charming, warm, and funny story of Kunal‘s life so far, with vignettes from childhood to college to now. It was a nice light listen, which was exactly what I was looking for.

GingerAntics I have this paperback on my shelf. I haven‘t read it yet. I‘m glad someone else enjoyed it. 3y

Con: awkward/TMI college vignettes

Overall: quick read, fun enough

I enjoyed listening to Kunal Nayyar's light-hearted and funny memoir. I think it was even better since it was read by him. I like him on The Big Bang Theory, and it's interesting to hear his story of how he got there.

Interesting? Yes. Funny? Mildly. A good road trip companion while dealing with some heavy family stuff? Absolutely. I really enjoyed the parts relating to cultural differences that Kunal has experienced. His stories were certainly entertaining enough to take my mind off things for a while. Oh, and I'm very happy they didn't keep the original name for his TBBT character. #audiobook #memoir #humor

Oh man how I loved this book. Sometimes you just really need something that makes you happy at the end with no other intention. This is the book, especially if you love The Big Bang Theory. Kunal Nayyar is so visibly personal in this book; he makes fun of himself and tells the truth about his experiences. And in the end he makes sure to make a point of offering a positive outlook on following your dreams in life. Loved it 😊

Kunal is as lovable as Raj is on the show (I‘m 5 seasons behind so hopefully that hasn‘t changed). He relates stories from his life with heart and humor. I enjoyed hearing about the lessons his father taught him, his friendship with his college roommate, his romantic experiences, how he landed the role of a lifetime, and “My Big Fat Indian Wedding.” #Booked2018 #diversenonfiction #LitsyAtoZ #nonfictionchallenge2018

This was a funny audiobook read by Kunal himself. I‘m a huge Big Bang Theory fan, so it was fun to get the background on this actor. He seems like such a genuine guy.

tracey38 I love The Big Bang Theory and Raj! I didn't know he wrote a book. 6y
Kaylamburson Yeah! Includes how he broke into the industry, dating stories, how he met his wife, and a bit about Big Bang. Really fun! @tracey38 6y

This is not a memoir, the author notes in the prologue. This collection of life stories from Nayyar‘s life is really written to give a peak into his personal life to fans of the Big Bang Theory show and perhaps even his fans too. There is no overarching story arc here, many stories seem disparate.
In short, read this if you are already a fan. Narration was good but the writing could be better.

Book 65. I'm behind by about six books 🙈 and it's totally stressing me out. It's fine it's fine, I'll get caught up! Onto the review! I don't usually read nonfiction, except the occasional comedian memoir (ok it was one other one but I own a few I intend to read someday!) this was very good! I laughed! I cried! I'm recommending it to you if you are in the mood for something quick and light!

I'm new to the whole audio book game, so please forgive me if this is a really dumb question...Can anyone tell me why books I downloaded from the library wouldn't play through Bluetooth or AppleCar Play in my car?? Is there another step that I need to take to make this happen or is it impossible??

Mariposa_Bookworm Did you have other apps open that we're using the audio? My iTunes playlist automatically plays when I get in the car, so I have to manually switch to something else. Our library uses Overdrive and I've not had any problems with audiobooks. 8y
hufflepuff_librarian @Mariposa_Bookworm I was using google maps, but I can listen to iTunes while that is running, so I wouldn't think it would be an issue? I'll try it again without maps and see what happens. 🤔 8y

I don't know. Maybe this book is not meant to be read/heard on one sitting and be stretched on long periods of time where you read one or two stories every once in a while, but that's what I did and that's what my review reflects. It's not a bad book of short stories, it's just that, short stories.
