#JoinIn I've been taking some time, with the sad news of my aunt Cindy passing away from lung cancer. 🕊🎗 This happened very suddenly, with some quietness about the symptoms (during Christmas) sadly with only a few days notice for family. 😔 The book The Silver Skates (last year's read) was a gift from my aunt. Books and vintage collectables, we'll treasure in memory.

It‘s been an age since I read this book but it was one of my dad‘s favorites & I remember him reading it to me in the winter & being fascinated that the children in the Netherlands in this story were ice skating to school.

I enjoyed the many adventures in this story, around the quest of seeking a famous doctor for Hans & Gretel's injured dad. There's a Dickens theme of harsh poverty, through the Dutch winter Feast of Saint Nicolas, but the good hearts of all the skater kids keep in positive cheer. Legends around Holland's history adds to the travels and illustrations. This was cool to try, as my aunt's favourite.

December was much busier than I expected, but all-good with more readathon help along the way. Thanks to #ReadNosedReindeer @StayCurious for the Winter Games fun! 🙂

Audio. This was ok. I liked Hans‘ family‘s story, but there was also a section (mostly in the middle of the book) that focused on some of the other local boys. I mostly lost interest when the focus was on them. There was some nice descriptions of the area and the (19th century) culture in the book, and one of the other boys was from out of the country, so some of this was seen through his eyes, in a way. Overall, it was ok.

This winter read is really cool, on the legends around The Festival of Saint Nicolas. 🎅 I'm enjoying it so far, with an interest in the darkly Dickens side. Between the hardships of poor living, the adventuring frozen lands skate team keeps a great hearty spirit.

Now starting The Silver Skates tonight! The original book (from my aunt) is a bit aged for my dust allergies .. Going more by the iBooks edition is double the fun for illustrations!

I'm on Team Read-Nosed-Reindeer for the Litsy Winter Games, starting in December. 🔴🤓⛸ I'll be reading The Silver Skates for the first time! ❄️ With my aunt's original book, recently given to me (from the 1950s) I'd best go with reading the iBooks version.

Hey, how much do y‘all think this is worth? It does not have a copyright , date or isbn number.

My first thought for #frozen #winterwonderland When I read this when I was very young- maybe 6 or 7 and it was the beginning of understanding the world was a lot bigger than Queens New York. This is not the same copy I read...

I bought this for my husband years ago in honor of the time he skated down the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. I drove the car and followed him along the river. The police called down from a bridge that he needed to stop as it was illegal, but he skated away. What a memory!
