The Sudden Appearance of Hope
The Sudden Appearance of Hope | Claire North
Listen. All the world forgets me. First my face, then my voice, then the consequences of my deeds. So listen. Remember me. My name is Hope Arden, and you won't know who I am. We've met before - a thousand times. I am the girl the world forgets. It started when I was sixteen years old. A slow declining, an isolation, one piece at a time. A father forgetting to drive me to school. A mother setting the table for three, not four. A teacher who forgets to chase my missing homework. A friend who looks straight through me and sees a stranger. No matter what I do, the words I say, the people I hurt, the crimes I commit - you will never remember who I am. That makes my life tricky. It also makes me dangerous . . . This is the tale of a girl no one remembers, and her story will stay with you for ever.

Do you have perfection?

This book addresses a very important topic and let me tell you this: you do not need perfection, you are already perfect the way you are ❤️

Claire North writes about a very important topic and added a fantastical element to it. Which fits just perfectly.

I prefer the English title to the German one, the original cover is also more fitting, but otherwise the transaction and audiobook adaptation are well done.

Any bets on whether I can actually read the entire book before book club via Zoom on Thursday? It‘s a hefty 494 pages. Oh, and it‘s my #doublespin for #bookspin. @TheAromaofBooks

Ruthiella 500 pages in two days?😱 Good luck! 😀 5y
BookNAround @Ruthiella Well, I did read 28 pages of it last night, but yeah, basically. Wonder how well I‘ll be able to fake it? 😂 5y

This is quite good and just a touch sad in concluding that the power of memory is that which keeps you engaged in society. North‘s idea in this book is as strong as Harry A; she is able to maintain it from start to finish while keeping her writing equally fluid. Where it falls short for me is the ground it covers. With the scandals the world has faced recently her data mining Armageddon is equal to a Pierce Brosnan 007.

TrishB I found it sad too. 6y

Is it ironic that I am reading this on a digital device...

Really enjoying this book- reading between things- it ends up keeping me transfixed. Love the twists and turns even if I feel plot bits are spinning off and away...

Quite the story here. There‘s a ton going on in this book and will likely require a re-read or two to get the full gist of it. Definitely an intriguing story. The writing itself was a bit different and took some getting used to. Liked Harry August better but still a worthwhile read.

3.5/5

#BookMail Pt2 This one is by the same author as The First Fifteen Lives Of Harry August. Hope is 16yrs old when she starts to disappear. First it‘s her father forgetting to take her to school, then her mother starts setting the table for three instead of four, until everybody forgets her completely. What do you do with your life then? Well, Hope turns to a life of crime, which honestly, wouldn‘t most of us? Can‘t wait to read this.

LoveToReadLiveToRead I really like Claire North, her books always have a premise that interests me. I enjoyed this one and Harry August, I have a few more on my TBR too. 6y

Read this because it won the 2017 World Fantasy Award.

Liked it much better than Henry August, but it was so emotionally taxing it took a while to get through.

Author realized the threat of user data monetization by big corporations such as Facebook before the recent scandal broke. Wish I could say she's a prophet, but she didn't say anything people didn't know at the time. Very happy the apathy about these issues is paused for the moment.

With 2 hours to midnight (PST), I finished my last book of 2017! A strange rumination on humanity, memory, social media, and the quest for perfection. A good one to close out this year. Ready for 2018!

I started this morning with 4 books in various stages of completion. Finished 2 today. Hoping to finish the rest before the New Year starts. I'm feeling pretty confident I can make this happen. Charlie's goals however are a little less lofty: sleep, eat dog biscuits, go back to sleep.

"Do you have Perfection?"

Fans of the show Black Mirror may very well love this book. I know I'm certainly enjoying it! It's messing with my head and making be want to delete all my social media accounts (expect Litsy of course). ?

Eating: lemon poppyseed cake, rosemary shortbread
Drinking: Smith Meadow tea

Has anyone read this one? My dad recommended it to me. My dad never recommends books. I have no idea if it's going to be good or not. Initial thoughts: I am a little confused about what's happening so far but intrigued. Will keep reading for now.

I want to give nothing away, this book is great! It grabbed my attention right away and did not let it go until I had finished reading it. Aside from the plot, there are some excellent cultural references. It's at times funny and sad.

Another library haul!

I picked up The Sudden Appearance of Hope for my husband, who loved The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by the same author.

The UK cover of The Vegetarian is pretty. That one is for ME!

I'd go back and forth between consuming the story and putting the book down and not touching it for a day or two. Hope was a compelling narrator, if not always reliable. I really did appreciate how imperfect she was as a character and the sometimes manic stream of conscious she had. While intriguing and compulsively readable, there were far too many parts of the story that dragged the narrative down.

What starts out as an exciting idea (the ability to not be remembered once someone leaves your presence) becomes quite a sad story really. To live on your own, no friends, no family; to have no one to remember anything that you've said or done. There is excitement to this story as well, however! A search, a chase, treachery, murder. A very thought-provoking story.

TrishB Liked this too, but agree, very underlying sadness. 8y

This book seems like Claire North/Catherine Webb imagined what it would be like if the Silence was actually a British girl. With that said, I loved the book and really felt for Hope.

Bus was running late had to cancel my appointment ( again 🙄) so I'm back home and I have decided to read this book that my 17 year old cat Nikie is fabulously modeling for me with her paws crossed. I hope the book is as good as the presentation. Akkkk 3/4 of one cup of soda w/ caffiene- I'm wired!

Mimi28 Starting to wind down finally. On a dr's ordered diet where basically the only thing I am SUPPOSED 😉😉 to drink is water. What really sucks is now I am so sensitive to everything else. I do feel a lot better physically and even mentally though. Darn doctors being right- no fun though! Good grief😁 8y
