Feeling pretty good about the reading I did this past month! Several really great 4 and 5 star reads. What more can you ask for?
I am a fan of Haruki Murakami but this is the first non-fiction book of his I have read. I like that it is the story of the people directly impacted by the sarin attack.

This was a really interesting look into an event I only recently began to learn about-- the Tokyo subway gas attack. The book focused on survivor / family experiences with a small additional portion from cult members. It's really comprehensive so it took me a while to get through but I did enjoy it.
I usually take a few physical books (often way more than I'll ever conceivably get through) and my kindle. No particular genre, but I usually get more reading done so I always take my current reads and some other books at the top of my tbr. @ozma.of.oz #SundayFunday
Tagging my current travel read.
Got a pretty good chunk of this book read on my crackers of dawn 2.5 hour flight this morning. Finished up the interviews with survivors and now on to the extended portion interviewing cult members.
Doing our respective favorite things: reading and being on neighborhood watch 😅
New cult book!
The hubs has Underground by Murakami on his reading list for college. I‘m so excited to read it along with him! This will be my first Murakami read. I‘ve heard so many things about this author!
I didn't know much about the gas attacks before reading this and oh boy has it left me with a taste in my mouth.
These poor people and good on them for mot being mad at the Aum gang.

I wasn‘t too crazy about Murakami‘s fiction, but this NF was impressive
This is one of my 2020 highlights.
Murakami really takes his time to get to know the people he interviews, lets them talk, listens and captures their suffering, their fear and hopes. I often was close to crying because of all this misery.
The second part with the interviews of ex-Aum members was moving as well and deepens the reading experiance.
This book crawled under my skin. And it will stay there.
Shizuko likes strawberry yoghurt, but unfortunately, most of her #nutrition is still squeezed in by tube through her nose.

While reading a collection of excerpts from Murakami's books, I got to know about the tagged book. It is a compilation of interviews following the Sarin attack in March 1995.
That quote describes a recovering survivor of the attack. Her recovery was believed to be 'miraculous"

Finished this today. Murakami undertook this project about a year after sarin gas was released in Tokyo subway trains in 1995. He interviewed survivors and families of those who died from it; as well as former members of Aum, the cult who orchestrated the attack. The author ponders some philosophical and existential questions that need to be asked and discussed-regarding morality/extremism

In March 1995, a religious cult launched a deadly gas (sarin) attack at the Tokyo subway. Though only twelve people dead, but thousands were injured and many suffered serious after-effects. Murakami, ‘angry at the extensive coverage by the Japanese media that focused on the perpetrators of the attack‘, set out to write about his interviews with the victims and even a member of the cult.

An intimate portrayal of the collective trauma from the Tokyo subway has attack. The ordinary citizens bound together by fate share their experiences. This is juxtaposed by Murakami‘s interviews with people affiliated with the perpetrators. What structural forces lead people who feel marginalized to commit horrible crimes? And what does it reveal about us that we also operate within that same structure? Definitely applies beyond Japan.
This was occasionally really great, but occasionally a slog that got a bit repetitive. This isn't a straightforward narrative about the sarin gas attack, but is rather stories from people, taken from dozens of interviews Murakami conducted after the attack. "I get up at 5:30 to go to work, I take x train and switch at y station" and on and on. It made me miss the way Murakami weaves a story, and u would have preferred a more traditional narrative.
" Murakami interviews the victims to try and establish precisely what happened on the subway that day. He also interviews members and ex-members of the doomsdays cult responsible, in the hope that they might be able to explain the reason for the attack and how it was that their guru instilled such devotion in his followers"
I have wanted to read Haruki Murakami for some time now, and i found this gem! This sounds so interesting and tragic!
Fascinating look at the sarin gas attack in the “underground “ subway system by a terrorist group. It is a fascinating look at how people dealt with the physical as well as the physiological effects of this attack.
I am always fascinated by differences in persectives and how a person's experience is affected by who that person is. This volume of interviews was particularly fascinating.

A little Murakami non-fiction about the gas attack in the Tokyo subway system on March 20, 1995.
Confession: There are few things aside from my friends, family, and Listy that make me as happy as looking at my collection of Murakami's. They even got the coveted "on top of the bookcase" spot. I admit it will be a bit of a bummer day when this collection is complete & I can't add to it. #Shelfie #MurakamiCultMember

Here's a compelling read for today's #setinasia theme. This book also holds a special place in my heart because I bought it for myself during my first year of teaching to celebrate my pink slip being rescinded. #somethingforsept #septphotochallenge

For #Recommendsday :this collection of witness/victim accounts about the Tokyo Subway Gas Attacks. I knew nothing about these attacks and only picked up the book because I was interested in the notion of Murakami writing a non fiction book. A good insight, as well, into the Japanese way of life and mentality.
