Someone else may have already posted this news, but Rupert Heath, founder of Dean Street Press, has passed away.

There‘s more about him, and the future of #FurrowedMiddlebrow books, on the FM blog:

http://furrowedmiddlebrow.blogspot.com/2023/03/the-ides-of-march.html

I emailed Rupert about a Susan Scarlett ARC, and he couldn‘t have been nicer and more patient in figuring out the right format for me.

jlhammar Oh, how sad. And no more FM reprints to come 😪 13mo
LeahBergen I‘m glad you posted this as I was just about to do it! It‘s so very sad. There will be no more Furrowed Middlebrow books to come but our little club can still work through the 96 that have been printed. I‘ll tag the rest of our club to make sure we all see this: @catebutler @elkeOriginal @erzascarletbookgasm @quietjenn @CarolynM @Cathythoughts @batsy @Kimzey @Jess_Read_This 13mo
CarolynM Thanks for posting @rubyslippersreads and thanks for tagging everyone @LeahBergen I was so sad when I heard the news, first about Amanda and then Rupert. DSP must be a thriving little business. Maybe someone will want to fold it into their little publishing house in due time. We can only hope. 13mo
LeahBergen @CarolynM Yes, I‘m hoping for something like that, too. 😢 13mo
rubyslippersreads @CarolynM @LeahBergen I hope that will happen too. 13mo
batsy Oh no, that is so sad. 54 is way too young. 😞 I'm not sure if he was the one tweeting under the FM account or if he occasionally did but I got the impression of an incredibly nice and approachable person. @CarolynM I hope that it's a possibility. DSP was such a lovely idea and it'll be such a loss without more reprints. 13mo
CarolynM @batsy The FM account is Scott Thompson who wrote the tagged blog post. He's the force behind the FM imprint while Rupert was the publisher. 13mo
batsy @CarolynM Ah, OK! Thank you for clearing that up. 13mo
Kimzey How terribly sad! Thank you for letting us know. 😢 13mo
Cathythoughts So sad. Yes 54 is way too young @batsy. I‘m so glad we are all part of FM and will have read the 96 books @LeahBergen It will be a poignant reading experience now. I hope DSP will continue somehow @CarolynM 13mo
Jess_Read_This It‘s a such a tragedy. I also read Scott‘s post just now that there will be no more Furrowed Middlebrow reprints. 😕 I‘m glad our group will continue reading together though! Thank you for tagging me @LeahBergen 13mo

I really enjoyed my first Margery Sharp book. Like the rest of the #FurrowedMiddleBrowClub members, I find this to be a very pleasant read. Quiet and satisfying. Full of wit and shows a keen eye for human nature. Now which of her book should I read next?

Tamra I‘m so looking forward to uninterrupted recreational reading time to finally get to this one. You all have enjoyed it! (edited) 2y
batsy Nice review! 💕 I'd love to read more by her. 2y
Ruthiella I think Cluny Brown is her most famous and its supposed to be funny. I think I might try it next. 🤔 2y

I think the consensus among members of #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub is this was a sweet yet occasionally sharp page turner about the life of a woman from the late 19th century to the 1930s. Separated into four parts and featuring (sort of) each garden in her life as she falls in love, marries and raises children.

Fun Fact: Margery Sharp wrote the children‘s books on which the Disney film The Rescuers was based. I LOVED those films and Miss Bianca. ❤️

Cathythoughts Lovely review of a lovely book. ‘Each garden in her life‘ beautifully said 💚 (edited) 2y
batsy I was really interested to learn that she wrote the Rescuer books! I have a vague memory of those and feel like I should re-watch it. 2y

Ruthiella @Cathythoughts Thanks Cathy. It was a nice, gentle read. 2y
Ruthiella @batsy @Tamra @quietjenn @BookNAround I only saw The Rescuers films and didn‘t even know there were books! I should have guessed. So many Disney properties have literary roots! 2y
Ruthiella @LeahBergen Thanks Leah. I wish I had had tulips 🌷 on hand since they sort of bookend the novel, but alas! 2y
erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve never heard of The Rescuers till I looked up her books! Lovely review. 💛 2y
Ruthiella @erzascarletbookgasm I‘ll bet the Miss Bianca/Rescuers books are charming! 2y

A quiet, unassuming book, centered on the modest and respectable Caroline and her quiet, unassuming life. Deceptively simple and straightforward, it's also smart and witty. Without pretension, but full of insight into class and the various roles and relationships Caroline navigated throughout her life.

batsy I haven't read Britannia Mews but I really want to! That, Cluny Brown, and Stone of Chastity (off the top of my head :) 2y
Ruthiella Great review! I have to post mine now too. I liked this one, my first Sharp, and suspect I‘ll read more from her in future. 2y
LeahBergen I haven‘t read Britannia Mews yet but I just recently found a nice little vintage edition. 👍 2y
LeahBergen @batsy Cluny Brown is a hoot! 😆 2y
rubyslippersreads @batsy @LeahBergen I love it, but it‘s darker than most other Sharps. (I think I feel a reread coming on.) 2y
quietjenn @rubyslippersreads me too! I thought it was interesting that this one came first. 2y
quietjenn @LeahBergen @batsy yes, I think Cluny Brown was the first thing I read by her and it was delightful! 2y
quietjenn @LeahBergen not surprised. That's very on brand of you 😉. 2y
quietjenn @rubyslippersreads @batsy @LeahBergen @Tamra Same. Britannia Mews is probably my favorite by her. I really love it, but it's darker and almost a melodrama (but in a not melodramatic way, if that makes sense). 2y
quietjenn @Ruthiella thanks! Looking forward to your thoughts! 2y
LeahBergen @quietjenn 🤣🤣 I like that “on brand” idea of me! 2y
Cathythoughts Great review! Caroline‘s character made it such a lovely read & the gardens 💚. I‘m going to order Britannia Mews just as soon as I have my morning coffee. Sounds good , Thankyou 👍🏻. 2y
rubyslippersreads Sounds like a group read of Britannia Mews might be in our future. 😉 2y
quietjenn @rubyslippersreads I could be persuaded pretty easily! 2y

An utterly pleasant, soothing read—Sharp's wit is always gentle & incisive without being too biting. There are some notions of marriage that one must get around for a book set in the 1920s, but there are also subtle ways in which Sharp draws attention to gender roles & class. The epitaph Sharp chose for the book comes from Jane Austen: "Let other pens dwell on guilt and misery" & it is perfectly apt. I'm interested to read more of her work!

Cathythoughts Lovely review 💫I found it pleasant as you say.. I am interested to read more of her too. Aren‘t we having a great time with these furrowed middle brows 👍❤️ 2y
Cathythoughts And soothing is the perfect word for this 👍 2y

batsy @Cathythoughts We are having a wonderful time 😁 I love that the books are almost always guaranteed to end somewhat happily; I need books like that to balance out the dark, gloomy ones I tend to read 😂 2y

batsy @Tamra It is, & a welcome one! And thank you; I used a scarf as a Litsy photo prop 😆 2y

batsy @Ruthiella What I needed this week, to be honest 🙂 2y
batsy @LeahBergen Thank you! And ooh, it's my turn 😆 I'll post by this weekend if that's OK? 2y
batsy @Dragon Glad to hear it, I've got my eye on that one! 2y
LeahBergen Oh, definitely! I‘m excited! 😆 2y
kspenmoll Your review was comforting, so stacked! 2y
CarolynM Great review! Caroline and Henry seemed to lead almost totally separate lives - they certainly didn't communicate very much! Not sure how much that was a product of the time and how much it was their particular personalities. 2y
batsy @kspenmoll Oh, goody! It's lovely for when you need just this type of book. 2y
batsy @CarolynM Yes, it seemed a combination of both! Its interesting that Henry remained largely mysterious to the reader right up until the end. 2y

Carrie's adult life had 4 distinct stages and each had its own garden. She was such a kind and gentle soul it was lovely to spend time in her company. I was both amused by and sympathetic to her bemusement at the goings on of her grown up children and I adored Lady Tregarthan.

batsy @Ruthiella Blank space on the page! Terror and anxiety! 😂 2y
quietjenn How is and disconcerting! Glad nothing is missing. 2y
LeahBergen Yes, mine was like this, too! I find odd little errors every once in a while in these Furrowed Middlebrow reprints. 2y
batsy @quietjenn Yes! Glad that it wasn't missing text. 2y

A novel that tells the story of one woman‘s life through the four gardens she calls her own doesn‘t seem likely to be the most scintillating of reads but this one had me turning the pages. We meet Caroline as a late-Victorian era teen and follow her up to the early 1930s. It sounds a bit like “damning with faint praise”, but this was a thoroughly pleasant read that left me with a smile on my face. How about you, #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub ? 😄

merelybookish Great review! They talked about this on Team& Books one day and I was intrigued! 2y
Ruthiella I‘m at 63% (and on to garden no. 3). It is a quiet story, for sure. I did really like the commentary in her early married life about how men were so deferred to (white bread vs wheat, etc.) Margery Sharp is good at subtly questioning the status quo, I think. 🤔 2y
Kimzey I‘m still on the first garden. Enjoying it so far. 2y
See All 26 Comments
quietjenn I'm still on garden two, but pleasant is really an apt adjective for it 🙂 2y
elkeOriginal I absolutely love how everyone says which garden they are on instead of page or chapter. Fantastic! 2y
batsy Great review. I'm on the third garden and agree with @Ruthiella on some of the subtle commentary on class and gender, while on the surface it's a very pleasant and easy read 🙂 2y
Cathythoughts Yes Leah a lovely review , ‘a thoroughly pleasant read‘. I found it very calming too , I loved the four gardens and I loved Caroline. A page turner for me too ! (edited) 2y
erzascarletbookgasm I‘m at the first garden too @Kimzey . 2y
Tamra You make me want to just sit and fall into the gardens. 💚 I‘m reading in tiny dribs and drabs, but really liking it too. 2y
LeahBergen @merelybookish I saw that on their episode list. I‘ll listen now that I‘ve read it! 😊 2y
LeahBergen @Ruthiella @batsy Exactly! It‘s the subtlety of her writing that I like so much, I think. She paints her images (especially of gender roles) with such a light stroke. 2y
LeahBergen @Kimzey @erzascarletbookgasm I hope you‘re both enjoying it! 😊 2y
LeahBergen @quietjenn And with world news the way it is right now, “pleasant” is just what I need! 2y
LeahBergen @elkeOriginal 😆😆 It does lend itself to that! 2y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I really liked Caroline‘s character. She was so warm and simple but definitely had a bit of steel beneath her motherly exterior. 2y
LeahBergen @Tamra Thank you! I‘m looking forward to your review and hope you like it as much as I did. 😊 2y
Cathythoughts Yes I think Caroline was strong like a mountain… still , strong , enduring. Settled on the earth , like her love of garden & earth. (edited) 2y
CarolynM I particularly enjoyed the generation gap and how perplexed Carrie was by her children's attitudes. Also, Lady Tregarthan on her daughter's situation - no children after 6 years of marriage "I don't know what they think they're doing. James is with his regiment, of course, but what ... do they get all these forty-eight-hour leaves for?" ??? 2y
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts Well put! 👏 2y
LeahBergen @CarolynM Loved that bit! And also “What? Did he seduce your parlour maid, too?” 😆 2y
CarolynM "The physique of a navvy with the brains of a guinea-pig ... That's what I told Marion; she said his brains didn't interest her." ? 2y
LeahBergen @CarolynM 🤣 My kinda guy! 2y
CarolynM I know, right? I mean, she wasn't wanting to have a conversation with him 2y
Sapphire What a gorgeous collection. What publisher or series is that behind the main title? 2y
LeahBergen @Sapphire It‘s the Furrowed Middlebrow series from Dean Street Press. 😊 2y
Sapphire Thanks! 2y
