The Last Act of Hattie Hoffman
The Last Act of Hattie Hoffman | Mindy Mejia
Seventeen-year-old Hattie Hoffman is a talented actress, loved by everyone in her Minnesotan hometown. So when she's found stabbed to death on the opening night of her school play, the tragedy rips through the fabric of the community. Local sheriff Del Goodman, a good friend of Hattie's dad, vows to find her killer, but the investigation yields more secrets than answers; it turns out Hattie played as many parts offstage as on. Told from three perspectives: Del's, Hattie's high school English teacher and Hattie herself, The Last Act of Hattie Hoffman tells the story of the real Hattie, and what happened that final year of school when she dreamed of leaving her small town behind . . . Wonderfully evocative of its Midwestern setting and with a cast of unforgettable characters, this is a book about manipulation of relationships and identity, about the line between innocence and culpability, about the hope love offers and the tragedies that occur when it spins out of control.

This was the slowest mystery I‘ve ever read. There were enough possibilities as to whodunit that I trudged on, and I‘m intrigued by sociopaths. However, I listened to this one on audible and there were too many pronunciation errors…
Nguyen (engen) and OB/GYN (obgin) and LOL (lull). I can‘t say I‘d recommend this book but I won‘t say it‘s a complete fail, maybe the paperback is decent. Book #13 in 2023

This book was NOT what I expected. I knew it was a thriller, but it told a great story that kept me guessing. Each chapter has 1 of 3 narrators, and can jump back and forth in time. Books like this can give me anxiety/frustration, but this did not. It was easy to follow & helped the story with its mystery. I also listened to some of the book while driving, & there are 3 different audio narrators paired with the 3 narrators in the book. Nice touch!

Loved this one. Super dark and twisty. I love books that capture how messy it is to be a teenage girl. I am putting this in my top 5 favorite books I've read so far in 2020.

TODAY‘S PROMPT: YOU‘RE THE ONE THAT I WANT.

Can you be anyone “you want to be” depending on the situation?

EVERYTHING YOU WANT ME TO BE doesn‘t really make Hattie someone that you will “want,” but you will be the one who will “want everyone” to know about this book. The ending and the entire book are brilliant.

I enjoyed this one. A murder mystery in a small town with great character development. I kept thinking I had it figured out only to be surprised in the end. I love when that happens. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I'm not really a thriller reader, but every once in a while, I want one. I think this just wasn't what I am into. The characters were mostly good, but the storyline kinda weirded me out more than anything. I felt like the book should have been over several chapters before it was (turned out, they hadn't done the final reveal at that point), and I wasn't a big fan of the ending. 2.5/5, read on scribd-audiobook

Probably won't end up on my favorites list, but it's holding my attention so far. Listening while driving, since grad school eats up all my reading time! Looking forward to seeing where the plot goes from here - I just started chapter 6 out of 26

Listening to this on audio. A character finds out she's pregnant and I'm not sure if it's because a man was reading the part but instead of saying OB-GYN they said obgine. What the what???

LiteraryinPA I have NEVER heard of that as an alternate pronunciation. Hmm. 7y

I can't decide on a rating for this. I think it might be a 3.5 star read for me. It was interesting and well-written, and I liked that a few different characters narrated. The mystery was well done but not surprising.
I'm not sure that it's a standout for me, but I did like it.

Excellent read. Multiple POVs usually make me cringe, because most writers can not pull them off. They end up making the story cumbersome and confusing, or give the feel that the narrative is constantly being interrupted, rather than brought forward. Not here. She handled it masterfully, each character‘s voice coming through loud and clear and perfectly distinct from the others; adding pieces to the puzzle one at a time. Couldn‘t put it down!

I‘m surprised how much I liked this thriller considering I didn‘t like the MC, a highly manipulative teenager. The narration wasn‘t my favorite either, but I got used to the tones of voice that I first found annoying. I think the story was well written; I enjoyed the story being told from the perspectives of 3 characters (teenage girl, teacher, and sheriff).

This was a good book, the main character was so good at manipulating people it seems like she manipulated herself without knowing that it. The ending was a little surprising. I recommend this to any mystery fan who enjoys reading about love triangles.

Everything You Want Me to Be is a well-paced small town murder mystery. The novel is peopled with a collection of characters who are all somewhat unlikeable in their own way. The narrative definitely kept me occupied, but read a lot like YA and relied quite heavily on cliches and familiar tropes. A decent easy read.

Fantastic! I had the best time reading this. I love the way the author gives little details in each chapter, just enough into to keep me guessing and suspecting everyone. And I love how complex these characters are! They're not all-good, they're not all-bad. They're unlikable and flawed, but I still liked them and felt for them.

I read print & listened to the audio. 3 narrators/3 POVs. The sheriff's narration was particularly good.

Another sick day, another book read. This story is told from through the use of three different, well developed characters. While they are definitely not very likeable, they are interesting and the method of narration is very effective and kept me on the edge of my seat. There was a great twist at the end too!

The book is written around three POVs, one of them being the victim. Each person's voice was strong and well written. I got a good feel of each individual and their motivations. Everything seemed believable and didn't strain credulity. However, it didn't surprise me at all. I saw what was coming from miles away. So, unfortunately, no shocking twists and turns for me. But it is a very good, solidly written book.

I'm conflicted about this book. It held my interest and I was happy to read a book with a small town setting that didn't paint all the characters in a condescending way, yet I finished the book thinking many of the characters could have been developed even more. I felt I was just starting to get to know them and the book ended. A promising author.

I enjoyed the writing of this book and the structure of the switching perspectives and timelines. I read this on a long plane ride and it kept me really engaged. Still, the ending was disappointing and uninspired to me. I also felt like elements of the book (the love story) dipped a little too far into uncomfortable territory for me to feel super positive about this book at the end.

Found this book disappointing because it was predictable. Even the 'twists' were predictable. The writing was fine and it was easy to read & even with its predictability was able to hold my interest but wanted it to be so much more.
