American Supernatural Tales
American Supernatural Tales | Various
19 posts | 6 read | 17 to read
As Stephen King will attest, the popularity of the occult in American literature has only grown since the days of Edgar Allan Poe. American Supernatural Tales celebrates the richness of this tradition with chilling contributions from some of the nations brightest literary lights, including Poe himself, H. P. Lovecraft, Shirley Jackson, Ray Bradbury, Nathaniel Hawthorne, andof courseStephen King. By turns phantasmagoric, spectral, and demonic, this is a frighteningly good addition to Penguin Classics. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Alternating between these two and finishing off a non fiction audio book for the rest of the week. I've never read any Holly Black before so will see how it goes.

I do not know if this counts for GARISH but I've recently completed my Penguin Horror collection and I absolutely love the creepy covers and design. I had most of these books in paperback but I really couldn't resist. #horror #uncannyoctober @RealLifeReading

RealLifeReading Wow those are awesome 7y
SkeletonKey @RealLifeReading - The photo doesn't do them justice, the insides and the edges are awesome too. 7y
PirateJenny And the covers are pettable. This is one time I'm going to step in and say thank you so much for appreciating these books. I was production editor on two of them (American Supernatural Tales and Haunted Castles) and they are some of the favorites I have ever worked on. And yes, I have the whole collection too. 7y

SkeletonKey @PirateJenny - I should probably say thank YOU then! Really, I couldn't be happier about these books. 7y
PirateJenny @SkeletonKey No, we do it for the readers. Without you, we wouldn't have anyone to make books for! I'm just so happy when I see people appreciate the special ones we do. 7y
TricksyTails That is an enviable stack! I love these editions!! 6y
TricksyTails @PirateJenny That is wicked cool!!! I have you to thank for these badass editions! I don't own them yet but they shall be mine. 😆 6y

I just had to post an image of big Steve (taken from Google). He was greatly inspired by many of the authors in this collection. This collection is a good introduction to American weird fiction. So give it a try and see if you like it. 🐸🐙

mjdowens Well shoot, another one added to my pile😏 7y
RadicalReader @quirkyreader what has been your favorite Stephen King novel? 7y
quirkyreader @RadicalReader at this point it is "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon". With "It" as a close second. 7y

I am currently on page 209 in this great collection. I'm still feeling like a hot mess so I called into work again. I feel guilty as sin for it. Why are we made to feel guilty about taking time off to take care of ourselves? Going in feeling crappy just makes the situation worse.

Betty Take care of yourself, rejuvenate and you'll be all the better to contribute your energy when you go in 7y
Kindredanne Stay home and rest. I went to work this week sick and now I I am home with my sinus infection much worse.... it has also developed into bronchitis. I will missing work this week according to the doctor at urgent care today. I've got a fever, horrible sinus headache body aches and an awful cough... illness abounds... worse thing, I feel so bad I don't want to read.... 7y
quirkyreader @Kindredanne My big fear is that I have surgery this week and I don't want it to be canceled. For today you should just listen to audio books or watch "bad" movies on YouTube. 7y
Kindredanne @quirkyreader Oh! Gosh!! I really hope your surgery doesn't get cancelled!! I hope that you get to feeling better quickly!! That is a great idea to listen to an audiobook or "bad" movies on YouTube. I will probably end up sleeping a lot truthfully. I hope everything goes well with your surgery & you have a speedy recovery!! 7y
RadicalReader @quirkyreader this book seems absolutely phenomenal love spooky things 7y

Currently I am on page 151. Boy am I ever a hot mess today. I am not at the big monthly sale selling books. I came down with a cold last night. But the the thing that blows is that I have surgery this week. I hope it doesn't get postponed. I can't take any medicine so I am just swilling hot water like crazy.

jpmcwisemorgan Can you drink herbal teas at all? Traditional Medicinals are my favorite and they have some for colds, sore throats, etc. The one for sore throats is weird so I have to doctor it with honey but it works. I hope you feel better soon and that surgery goes off without a hitch. 7y
quirkyreader @jpmcwisemorgan I can't take any medicines or herbs. So it's hot water and plenty of rest. 7y
jpmcwisemorgan Shoot, that really bites. I hope it passes soon. 7y

Pickpick

This is a fantabulous collection well chosen by Joshi and with an excellent intro by del Toro in this hardcover edition.

Personal note: I am a production editor at Penguin Books and I worked on both the original edition and the new one with the del Toro intro. I visited the del Toro exhibit at LACMA today and saw this. My life is complete.

*door creaks, ominous organ music plays* Time for #ghostsoflitsy! We are kicking off tomorrow through 12/22/16. There are 3 ways to participate:
1. Every week, I'll post 3-4 short story suggestions with sources. I'll create a dedicated discussion for it every 2-3 days.
2. Every 3 weeks, I'll post a suggested book with a discussion day.
3. Both! Or do your own thing using the various spooky hashtags.
Get ready for a ghostly good time! #muhahaha

mllemay Sounds like fun! Out of curiosity, and because I am a big baby who can't read horror, will there be varying degrees of spookiness? 8y
brendanmleonard @mllemay yes! I can't promise that I will have read everything, but we'll try to keep it in the realm of the spooky and away from the horrorific/upsetting. 8y
LibrarianJen Can't wait! I'm with you @mllemay I can't handle super scary either. 😳 8y
tricours Meh, I was hoping for truly scary and horrific stuff 😕 8y
brendanmleonard @tricours I have been pondering a special midnight hour edition with the truly frightening 😉👻😱 8y
moranadatter This sounds like so much fun! Thanks for organizing it! 8y
mllemay @LibrarianJen glad to know I'm not the only one around here! It seems a lot of people on Litsy love horror, which is obviously understandable...I just can't really deal 🙁 8y
LibrarianJen @mllemay I like things like Buffy and paranormal, vampires, werewolves, shifters, Edgar Allen Poe, that kind of stuff. I can't handle things like Stephen King, creepy clowns, aliens, ghost encounters, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc. I have noticed too that a lot of Littens like their horror. 8y
mllemay @LibrarianJen same for me - no dolls, clowns, etc. 😩🙅 8y
BookishFeminist I love that this is lasting through December 😂😂😂 I have to get my #creeplife on for longer than October 8y

Behold, my "fiscal irresponsibility knows no bounds" haul. Dave Ramsey is giving me mad side-eye right now.

AlexandraGriffin I am in love with those penguin cloth bounds! I bought way too many when I worked at B&n! 8y
StephTKO @GriffinAndHerBooks Aren't they gorgeous!?!? Omg... There are others!? Like sets? Or individual? 8y
StephTKO @GriffinAndHerBooks Oh good lord, I just answered my own question online. I need ALL of these gorgeous books. 8y
See All 6 Comments
brendanmleonard I have a couple of these and they're a highlight of my supernatural anthology collection. I've been thinking about getting the whole set but I already own a couple of the texts in other forms. 8y
StephTKO @brendanmleonard I thought the exact same thing. I have the complete works of Poe and Lovecraft so I skipped those. But then I got these and the design is just so unique, I just ordered the last two to complete the set. 8y
brendanmleonard @StephTKO I have the two you have in the photo. I don't have the Jackson. 8y
