Sound of the World by Heart
Sound of the World by Heart | Giacomo Bevilacqua

An experiment in social isolation turns into a journey of self-discovery as a photojournalist commits to chronicle 60 days in New York city without talking to a single person. More than just an exercise in observation and self-control, he's hoping to forget a troubled past and mend a broken heart. But the city has a sneaky way of throwing the best laid plans and noble efforts to waste revealing secrets that lie right in front of him. All he has to do is open his eyes ... A touching, vividly illustrated journey through contemporary modern New York, exploring what it takes to find yourself- and maybe your soulmate - in the middle of a crowded, bustling modern world.

And with that... I HAVE A BINGO!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

I was going to post this with a lovely picture of Pebble, but she picked this moment to clean her bottom, so never mind 😐

BookishMadHatter Way to go on the bingo 👏 2y

The art is sublime. Gorgeous depiction of New York. Stunning cityscapes. Worth reading for the pictures alone.

The story... less so. Maybe I didn't fully get it. I certainly have questions. And it seemed to be trying too hard to tug on my heart strings.

More style than substance in the end, but BOY is this one stylish volume.

Here's the agenda for July... I'm planning on doing a lot of working and gymming this month (new month, new Rae?) so I'm not going to predict a bingo, but I'm hoping to nibble away at my TBR all the same 😊💕

I‘m more than a little surprised by the negative reviews of this. I thought it was beautiful, story and illustrations.

This was a seemingly simple but very unique somewhat autobiographical graphic novel. The art is great--kind of comic-style but also almost photographic with the background at times. This book is partially a love story between people and places but really more about rediscovering oneself after growth and tragedy. And there's some suspension of disbelief required at the end. Overall, an interesting and enjoyable break from the typical graphic novel.

Introducing...Rosalind Irene! She was born at 8:27 Tuesday morning, 8 lbs 4 oz, 21 in long! Thanks everyone for the well-wishes. It went relatively smoothly, and our little firecracker is finally here!

(The tagged book is a graphic novel I received as an eARC a while back and let expire accidentally. Finally getting to it now via interlibrary loan.)

readinginthedark @mrsmarch @LapReader @merelybookish @batsy Thank you! Her first name is from As You Like It, of course, and Irene was my great-grandmother's name and my mom's middle name. 💗 6y
mrsmarch @readinginthedark Irene is my great-grandmother‘s first name. She died when my grandmother was only 7 so we never got to know her. My grandmother was raised by HER grandmother (Annie) and my mother was named after Annie instead (HER great-grandmother). The ladies in my maternal line have been naming daughters after great-grandmothers for about 200 years. 🤩 6y
readinginthedark @rustoryhuf Absolutely! If she stays awake for longer than an hour, I'll start reading to her! 😆 6y
readinginthedark @mrsmarch That's so sweet! I was named after both of my grandmothers (first name for one, middle name for the other), but my mom and I are the only ones who've done that so far. 6y

This graphic was a beautifully drawn love story to New York City and how it has the power to change life trajectories or fulfil them. While the ending was a bit layered and convoluted at times, I enjoyed the premise and the time spent reading it. Give it a go and let me know what you think.

I wish I could give this a pick for the gorgeous New York City art, but the story is just too dumb and badly written. 5⭐️ art, 1⭐️ story.

readinginthedark Oh, that's too bad. It was a little strange, but I liked this one. 6y

A little bummed about my mixed feelings on this - I really liked the artwork but found the story surprisingly pretentious and that female characters were treated like objects.

readinginthedark Interesting! 🤔 I didn't really see the female characters represented as objects so much as the story just centering around the main male character. Joan is, after all, the one who saves him and helps reveal everything that happened, rather than just being something pretty that pops up in his pictures a lot. 6y

#2017Book90
Sam has challenged himself to a social experiment: live in NYC for two months without vocally interacting with anyone. He documents his surroundings through photos, but only develops them after several hundred pictures. But when he opens his latest pack of photos, he finds the black and white photos have been doctored, and the same woman is in color in many of them. He knows it can't be coincidental, but what could it mean?
