Rules for a Knight
Rules for a Knight | Ethan Hawke
Never announce you are a Knight, simply behave as one. You are better than no one, and no one is better than you. When Sir Thomas Lemuel Hawke was a boy, his grandfather taught him how to be a knight. Now, on the eve of a battle from which he fears he may not return, Sir Thomas writes a letter to his children so that he may pass on all his hard-won lessons, deepest aspirations and most instructive failures. Full of adventure and wit, the letter provides a guide for living a good and noble life a reminder that without a little agony none of us would bother to learn a thing; that we must work together as brothers or perish together as fools; that a friend loves you because you are true to yourself, not because you agree with him. And, most importantly, it shows that there is no obstacle that enough love cannot move.

Ethan Hawks wrote this brief book of rules for living for his kids in the form of a found manuscript from a Welsh ancestor.

It can be eye-rollingly trite, like when a medieval knight tells his grandson Billy Graham‘s “Two Wolves” story pretty much verbatim.

But there are times when it is just so earnest that it punched through my cynicism and ended up being exactly the cheer-leading message I needed to hear.

ragesyrup I had no idea he wrote a book! .....I have a MIGHTY NEED 5y

So ein schönes kleines Buch über die Regeln über den Umgang mit anderen oder auch mit sich selbst. Ein schöneres #hygge Buch könnte es kaum geben. Auch die Verweise und die Beispiele sind sehr anschaulich gewählt.

Such a tiny little book about rules how to behave towards others and to yourself. Such a nice #hygge book. The references and the examples are very demonstrative.

To all Littens who love Thich Nhat Hanh. @Faibka @Yellowpigeon

Another trip by train. Hopefully I works better today.

Quite excited to learn some new rules, even though I am not a not knight. 😉

Though Ethan Hawke describes values that he thinks a knight or lady should have, and most of them are in fact to be desired, the thought that people can survive in a society while following all the rules, is highly unlikely. And the tale of a mighty stag is rather biased. It's more like he wants to force his own values on children as they are the ones addressed with this book.

Did you guys know Ethan Hawke is a writer?! I stumbled across this book on Amazon today. I fell in love with Ethan Hawke when I saw him in Reality Bites (pictured as his character, Troy). Now that I know my man is a writer too....well, that's just too much! Although, I'm a little afraid of reading it because my dreams may be crushed. What if it's awful? What if he's one of those actors who thinks he can do anything just because of who he is?!

Maude A long time ago, like around 2000, I read his book, The Hottest State, and while I didn't love it, I did like it :) 7y
minkyb He is very intense on stage and I have read interviews where he sounds quite thoughtful so worth a try. 7y

Going the way of @merelybookish for the tricky #LyricalApril #UmaThurman prompt.

Uma Thurman was married to Ethan Hawke > Ethan Hawke wrote Rules for a Knight which is on my shelf, still TBR.

Fun Fact: Ethan and Uma met on the set of Gattaca.

Bonus Fun Fact: I really cussin' love Gattaca. Like a lot.

merelybookish I feel we've done a lot to promote Ethan Hawke the writer today. 😉 7y
mklong @merelybookish I approve of the Ethan Hawke promotion, because, well Dead Poets Society! 😍 7y
Blueberry I did like Ethan Hawke's Hamlet alot. Nothing book wise on Uma though. 7y

diovival This is one of my favorite movies! I have watched it so many times. 7y
Librarianaut Gattaca is an awesome movie! 7y
Cinfhen Thanks for all the fun facts!!! And I agree with @merelybookish good job 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻 7y
Lidia Great movie! 7y
Izai.Amorim Gattaca is great, love the modernist buildings they chose as set, shows how simultaneously futurist and timeless classical modern architecture could be. 7y
Dragon If memory serves, Jude Law is also in the movie, guess whose playing the young Dumbledore , so that's how Uma Thurman and Harry Potter are connected 😂 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @batsy He sure did! Apparently he wrote a book about a knight sharing his wisdom as a way of dispensing advice to his kids. He's got a couple novels as well. 7y
batsy @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I've heard about his novels but wasn't aware about this one. Sounds interesting, thanks! Also I'm not sure what I was doing four months ago that I missed this great thread. I thought Gattaca was really good. 7y

#Umathurman and Ethan Hawke were married. Hawke has written four novels, none of which I've read. (Ive always kind of assumed Hawke is a lot like the guy he played in Reality Bites:hot, smart, "sensitive," douchey. ?)
I did have a massive crush on him after Dead Poets Society, though.
#lyricalapril @Cinfhen

LauraBeth I've been wanting to read one of his books out of curiosity 😀 7y
merelybookish @LauraBeth I know! He's had four published so I expect he has some talent. 😉 7y
TheKidUpstairs I read The Hottest State ages ago. I remember enjoying it, but remember absolutely nothing else about it. 7y

Suet624 I have listened to him give lengthy interviews and have been surprised each time by his intelligence and thoughtful responses. Now I seek him out. (Although I haven't read any of his books.) 7y
Ruri_kaichou Who didn't have a crush on him after Dead Poet's Society? Lol. 😳 7y
Cinfhen Ethan Hawke is totally hot 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥no idea he was a published author! Extra ☄️☄️☄️ (edited) 7y
Mariposa_Bookworm I sometimes show the PBS special he did on Macbeth when I introduce the play. He is quite intelligent which is always super sexy. 7y
Jess_Read_This I had a crush on him after he did Great Expectations... an interesting Pip. 7y
Kimberlone I've always thought he's probably more like his character in the "Before" series... 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk This is where I went for this prompt too! Love this guy, but what an unpleasant smirk in the picture. 7y
merelybookish @Kimberlone I like those movies a lot. He's a writer in then too isn't he? 7y
merelybookish @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Haha. Indeed. I just searched for Ethan Hawke author. It was one of the first pics to come up. Have you read any of his novels? 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @merelybookish Nope, but I've got Rules for a Knight on my shelf waiting. 7y
LeahBergen @TobeyTheScavengerMonk That's because it's a "hot and douchey" smirk. Right, @merelybookish ? ?? 7y
LeahBergen His PBS show on Macbeth was pretty good! 7y
merelybookish @LeahBergen If the shoe fits...😎 7y
merelybookish @LauraBeth @TheKidUpstairs @Suet624 @Ruri_kaichou @Cinfhen @Mariposa_Bookworm @Jess_Read_This @Kimberlone @TobeyTheScavengerMonk @LeahBergen To recap. Hawke is hot, has been in good movies, is intelligent, and maybe?douchey😊. Lots of opinions about Hawke but not about his books. I feel like I should read one now. 7y
Zelma The tagged book is supposed to be great, though I haven't read it. It was recommended by the Books on the Nightstand podcast, which pretty trustworthy. 7y
Jess_Read_This @merelybookish 😂🤔A most excellent and succinct recap of the discussion. And now I'm adding his book to the TBR shelf... (edited) 7y
Mariposa_Bookworm Now I feel I must read one too! He goes on the TBR List! 7y
Mariposa_Bookworm Speaking of actors who write, what about James Franco's book? Has anyone read his work? 7y
merelybookish @Mariposa_Bookworm I feel even less inclined to read Franco's stuff. He seems even worse than Hawke. (I'm starting to think I may have a bias against actors/novelists. 😛) Doesn't David Duchovny write too? Any actresses write? 7y
Cinfhen I agree Franco seems douchey. Sorry, James 😐 I feel like Jodi Foster could write a kickass book (edited) 7y
Kimberlone @merelybookish he is a writer in the later movies and his hit book is based on his encounter with Celine in the first! Apparently much of the dialogue in the movies was developed by the actors themselves. I'm interested in Hawke's own writing...hopefully not too douchey? 7y
drokka @merelybookish There are a few female actors that write (especially children's books) but the only I can think of at the moment that writes fiction novels is Dawn French. 7y
merelybookish @drokka I did some googling and came up with Meg Tilley and Amber Tamblyn, although she is known for poetry. 7y
merelybookish @Cinfhen I think hes a good actor but yeah, super douchey. Remember the time he co-hosted the Oscars? 😮 7y
LaraReads This thread is fantastic! And totally the first thing my mind went to with Uma! I guess we should all read some Hawke now. 7y
Cinfhen That was such a disaster, I mean MTV awards, fine! But hosting the Academy Awards....it was horrible!!! I'm intrigued to see what Meg Tilley penned....since she's a little quirky as an actress🙄 7y

Was going to try a close-up collage-y shot of my #greencovers but then Cosmo showed up and I didn't want to deprive anyone of that.

I've said this before but Charles de Lint = so many green covers.

#dogsoflitsy #marchintoreading

vivastory I'm going to read my second China Mieville book soon, I'm curious what are your favorites? 7y
CherylDeFranceschi 💕China! 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @vivastory Quick answer: All. Long: While I've read 9 of his books and each one is startlingly different and has stunned me in its own way my top 3 are The Scar, The City & the City, and KRAKEN. Which have you read? 7y
See All 19 Comments
DeborahSmall Jonathan Carrol recommends China Mieville and Charles de Lint. I've only read The Onion Girl and loved it. 7y
Kammbia1 Love the Charles de Lint covers. I have read The Little Country and Memory and Dream. 7y
Kammbia1 I read Moonheart too. 7y
vivastory @TobeyTheScavengerMonk The City & the City. I've been reading mysteried with a unique approach, hence my current read 7y
vivastory *reading mysteries 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @DeborahSmall If you like The Onion Girl check out Memory & Dream or the collection Dreams Underfoot. Neat that Carroll recommends them both. De Lint is like a lighter more earthy Carroll and Mieville is like a darker less trippy Carroll. 7y
DeborahSmall @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Great, thanks for the recommendations. I don't know much about either author. I have two of China's; Perdido st station and another. I'm at my MILs so can't check. But I found perdido st hard to get in to 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @vivastory Mieville is genuinely trying to dabble in all genres, and the results are all out there. Embassytown is a sci-fi book and Perdido Street Station is a fantasy in the same way that The City & the City is a mystery. Meaning I guess that he is always doing SO MUCH OTHER STUFF than just meeting the genre's expectations. Can't push Kraken hard enough either. 7y
DeborahSmall @vivastory The Little Sleep looks great. Another buy. I tend to buy books when my insomnia is bad....sometimes I forget, not too good for my bank balance! (edited) 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Sace I'm a Charles de Lint fan as well! 7y
DeborahSmall @vivastory I've just ordered the first 2 in Paul Tremblay's series, from US so will take a few weeks. @TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Kammbia1 I've also order Memory and Dreams 👍🏻 7y
vivastory @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I was planning on Kraken being my next Mieville, then I got on this mystery kick. I'll definitely be checking out Kraken soon. 7y
vivastory @DeborahSmall I hope you like them. They're quite a bit different from "Head Full of Ghosts" & "Disappearance at Devil's Rock." I love it, I think having a narcoleptic narrator is an interesting take on the information gaps in noir novels. 7y
Sace @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I really need to reread all of his books that are on my shelves. 7y
RealLifeReading I've only read a couple of Charles De Lint - The Little Country and The Blue Girl (not sure why I read that one!) but would like to read more. Recommendations? 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @RealLifeReading For novels try Memory & Dream, for short stories Dreams Underfoot. These and most of his books (Blue Girl included) take place in the fictional city of Newford and a lot of the same characters show up. 7y
