Save Me a Seat
Save Me a Seat | Gita Varadarajan, Sarah Weeks
Joe and Ravi might be from very different places, but they're both stuck in the same place: SCHOOL. Joe's lived in the same town all his life, and was doing just fine until his best friends moved away and left him on his own. Ravi's family just moved to America from India, and he's finding it pretty hard to figure out where he fits in. Joe and Ravi don't think they have anything in common -- but soon enough they have a common enemy (the biggest bully in their class) and a common mission: to take control of their lives over the course of a single crazy week.

Ravi and Joe are beautifully developed characters. Simplicity language that is relatable for you students.
Made me feel lots of feels. 🥰😭😟 As a mom my heartached for both characters that we follow in the story. Definitely recommend school age students to read this book.

Sorry I'm a little late with my #summerreadingswap My mail lady kinda sucks and there was a mix up with my package but it is awsome. Thank you so much @bookwormjillk I love everything. The stickers are the best and I can't wait to read Save Me A seat with my daughter. She has already stole the fuzzy bookmark.

Bookwormjillk I hope you both like the book. My son and I loved it. 5y

A great and magical road trip to visit family this weekend. Out of the 3 1/2 audiobooks we listened to the tagged one was our favorite. My son and I both wished it was longer. Would love recommendations for read alikes.

This is the book chosen locally for the One School One Book program! Has anyone read it? Thoughts? I'm about halfway through and I love it so far! 99 schools in Michigan are participating in this wonderful program! It's so exciting! 🤗📚💕

Amiable Our community does a similar program--only it's called One Book, One Region. The entire community is encouraged to participate. All the local schools read it, and book-related events are held at area senior centers as well. 5y

I put aside my own #TBR to read a book from the TBR that Maya has for me. 😃 This is the first of the Battle of the Books selections that I hope to read ahead of her competition in March.

Ravi recently moved to the US from India, & is adjusting to the new culture and customs in an American elementary school. Joe has Auditory Processing Disorder, which makes some tasks hard and can mask his talents. There is more than meets the eye in this one.

Jerdencon @4thhouseontheleft Connor loved this one - I may have to read it now too! 5y
litmuggle1 Is there anything to perverse for a 8 year old. I have a coworker hows daughter suffers. She went to preschool with my daughter before she had to pull her out because the school was not equipted and she may put her back next year. PS: Shes very advanced we haven't read little kid books as she calls them for awhile. 5y

Nebklvr I just looked at this book the other day. Glad to hear it would be a good one to pick up 5y
alisiakae @justanothermusing I‘m not sure what you mean by perverse? There is nothing in the story that is not age-appropriate to anyone in elementary school, either as a read aloud or independent reading. 5y
alisiakae @Nebklvr It is rather simplistic writing, but I actually like that because it appeals to kids on a variety of reading levels. It was a very popular pick by kids at the scholastic book fair this year at my daughter‘s school! 5y
litmuggle1 Thank you i missed that it was middle school. 5y
alisiakae @justanothermusing The characters are in 5th grade (aged 10), which is still elementary school where I live. 😊 5y

Why am I up so early when I stayed up so late to watch the lunar eclipse? 😫

Finished this book last night, and loved this quote on one of the final pages.

YES to all of this!!

A close friend of mine has a son who has APD, as well as SPD and ADD. Joe (the character) is more fortunate than my friend‘s son, since Joe receives support/therapy during the school day.

Almost every year I watch my friend fight battle after battle for her child; many teachers don‘t understand APD and the accommodations these kids must have to thrive. Underfunded schools doesn‘t help. These two paragraphs ring so true!

Reviewsbylola The son of one of my friends was just diagnosed with APD. She was so relieved to finally have the diagnosis (here they apparently won‘t evaluate until age 7) and luckily our district has made the transition smooth so far. 5y
alisiakae @Reviewsbylola My friend‘s son was diagnosed around the same age, I think he was in 1st grade. He‘s at a charter school; it‘s a great school in all other ways except they are not consistent with his accommodations. Especially now that he is in middle school. 5y
Weaponxgirl Aww that sucks! I work with young people with autism who often have this. Does he have the sound cancelling headphones for being out? I can really help if they get anxiety because of overstimulation. If you want any ideas feel free, though I will say I‘m often working with children with other issues on the more extreme end so may not all be helpful. 5y

alisiakae @Weaponxgirl Thanks, she doesn‘t really need ideas or advice, just better support! Teachers often forget that he needs to have directions/homework/etc. written down, not just given orally, as well as knowing what he will be learning next ahead of time. It became harder in middle school now that he has a different teacher for each subject. He has lots of therapy outside of school b/c he has a host of diagnoses, but it is $$$$ & she‘s a single mom. 5y
Weaponxgirl @4thhouseontheleft I get that! It‘s so important for teachers to be aware of these things so that they can do the best by all their students even though they are themselves often stretched to the limit. Do u guys get extra provisions in America for young people with additional needs? 5y
alisiakae @Weaponxgirl Yes! It‘s called an IEP, and he has one. Last year she had to hire an advocate because the school wasn‘t following it. He gets extra time on tests, that is the one thing they have provided consistently. 5y
alisiakae @Weaponxgirl I feel like I‘m coming down hard on teachers in this post, and I don‘t mean to. The bigger problem is that schools as a whole (although charters are a little better off), struggle with low teacher pay, not enough money for supplies, and larger classroom sizes. It makes it much harder to provide accommodations for kids that need it (for a variety of different reasons). 5y
Weaponxgirl @4thhouseontheleft that‘s good to hear. 😊 we have that here but often the waiting lists are horrendous and it‘s really draining on the family. I‘m sending good thoughts their way. 5y
Weaponxgirl @4thhouseontheleft that exactly! I see both sides as I also have teacher friends and it‘s frustrating on all sides. Most teachers do want to do right by everyone but they often have hurdles standing in their way. 5y

This was a really cute book with a positive message. It‘s maybe a little young for my library (the characters are in 5th grade, and kids tend to read up) but I have a few students in mind who I think would like it.

Mehso-so

This was a story about 2 fifth grade boys and how they navigate the bully in their class and their wrong assumptions about each other. One of the boys just moved to the US from India. It was between a Pick and a So-So for me. One of the cool things was a glossary at the end with the slang American terms and the Indian terms described in detail, as well as some recipes for foods mentioned in the story. For the right kid, this could be a great book.

So I just started this food-related book today and it seemed like a fitting one to tag for the #12kgiveaway from the generous @Booksandcooks ! I made some banana chocolate chip pancakes from scratch (I‘m usually a mix girl) this morning... and they were just so-so. Pretty underwhelming. Frankly, it made me want to go out to brunch soon so someone else can make them taste more delicious! 😋

BennettBookworm I've been wanting to read that for a while! Can't wait to hear your review ☺️ 6y

This was a great #audiobook and #MGNovel. The alternating narrators were great and really drove the themes of the novel. I really enjoyed the characters and felt for them as they struggled with incredibly relatable problems. I can‘t wait to purchase this title for my school library.

Most of the reviews I read about this book centered on how teachers or children should read it as it revolves around two children being bullied by their fellow student, Dillon Samreen. However, as it is mentioned in the book that "The world is full of Dillon Samreens",I personally feel that everyone should read it. A light read with an underlying deeper meaning.
Highly recommended!

It was a great YA novel that I will recommend to my students! It was a nice easy read to show how two people can be completely different and yet, still find a commonality between them.

The truth is, Mrs Beam's assignment had totally slipped my mind. Personal reflection. At first I had thought it would be easy; I hadn't given even given it a second thought. I knew who I was. But now after 3 days at Einstein Elementary I am no longer the same person I used to be. I am Curryhead, a loser who can't speak English and has no friends.

Peaceful_Reader This is the book I will hand to teachers looking for a good read aloud! 7y

This is an excellent book for kids worried about school, bullies, and making friends. One main character's family recently immigrated from India, and the other has an auditory processing disorder. The struggles they face in fifth grade are realistic, and the writing is excellent for young readers. I think adults would like this story, too - it's heartwarming and only takes about an hour to read

Co-written by two author each who assume the role of a fifth grade boy when writing the story. I loved the back and forth point of view during the boys first week of school. Main focus of the story is how the two boys overcome a school bully and form an unlikely friendship.

This is a great middle grade story told from the perspective of two boys. Joe lives in NJ, is in 5th grade, has an auditory processing challenge & is the target of the class bully. Ravi has justed moved to NJ from India & has the challenge of fitting into a new culture. The boys don't see eye to eye & even misjudged situations, but learn that everything isn't always as it seems. #teachersoflitsy
