I, Eliza Hamilton
I, Eliza Hamilton | Susan Holloway Scott
In this beautifully written novel of historical fiction, bestselling author Susan Holloway Scott tells the story of Alexander Hamiltons wife, Elizaa fascinating, strong-willed heroine in her own right and a key figure in one of the most gripping periods in American history. Love is not easy with a man chosen by Fate for greatness . . . As the daughter of a respected general, Elizabeth Schuyler is accustomed to socializing with dignitaries and soldiers. But no visitor to her parents home has affected her so strongly as Alexander Hamilton, a charismatic, ambitious aide to George Washington. They marry quickly, and despite the tumult of the American Revolution, Eliza is confident in her brilliant husband and in her role as his helpmate. But it is in the aftermath of war, as Hamilton becomes one of the countrys most important figures, that she truly comes into her own. In Washington, Eliza becomes an adored member of society, respected for her fierce devotion to Hamilton as well as her grace. Behind closed doors, she astutely manages their expanding household, and assists her husband with his political writings. Yet some challenges are impossible to prepare for. Through public scandal, betrayal, personal heartbreak, and tragedy, she is tested again and again. In the end, it will be Elizas indomitable strength that makes her not only Hamiltons most crucial ally in life, but his most loyal advocate after his death, determined to preserve his legacy while pursuing her own extraordinary path through the nation they helped shape together.

Went to the museum of the American revolution today here in Philly with my 14 yr old and 7 year old(it was his idea he was asking question and I said we can go to the museum. He said sure. I was surprised and thought he wouldn‘t like it but he loved it , anyways in the shop the sales lady recommended this book I‘m currently reading Hamilton and it‘s a chunkier so I thought why not read this one

I used this one for my Conduit prompt for Orilium: Gear Up.

Really enjoyed this one. It reminded me of how much I enjoy the time period around the American Revolution.

Hey y‘all. I‘ve been gone a while but I‘m working my way back.

For the end of the year I‘ve decided to participate in the #clearurshitreadathon happening now through the end of December. Instead of sharing a TBR though I‘ve decided to mood read and fit the books I finish into the prompts.

I‘m definitely looking forward to the end of the year, are you?

Despite the title, this is not so much about Eliza, as a story about Alexander - and their relationship - from her POV. I wish it would have spanned her whole life, considering she lived another 50 years after his death, and did many remarkable things during that time.

Isn‘t this 🌼 gorgeous? It‘s one of the few #flowers still blooming in our summer garden. #SelfImprovementSept

I‘m unsettled by the constant reference to slaves as servants in this book. Is the author trying to use the terminology of the time? How is this not erasing the pain and horror of slavery in a historical fiction novel filled with slave-owning families, and containing multiple enslaved characters essentially as backdrop?

Scochrane26 A good question. 5y
alisiakae @scochrane26 The more I think about it, the more it strikes me as sanitization. Language is important, and this is an inaccurate and false narrative that should not be present in historical fiction novels. (edited) 5y
JSW I think this is definitely white-washing. She would have known they were slaves. Whether or not she believed slavery was wrong was what would be in question for the time, not whether someone was a servant or slave. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Scochrane26 @4thhouseontheleft I know people did call them servants a lot, so if I give the benefit of the doubt to author, she may be trying to write how Eliza thinks. But, I think it‘s prob sanitization, esp because she‘s talking about Washington (we like him to be perfect). 5y
alisiakae @JSW Yes, exactly. I just am not sure if slave owners often referred to their slaves as slaves, or servants. But either way, this author is reminding me of the Northam debacle, and when he referred to slaves as indentured servants. I‘m about ready to bail on this book. Eliza and Hamilton decided not to own slaves after they married, but she grew up in a slave-owning family. 5y
alisiakae @JSW I‘m also getting a bit of a “happy slave” vibe in certain parts, which infuriates me to no end. This is exactly why I tend to only read historical fiction set during the revolutionary and antebellum period if it is written by a PoC. 5y

Yikes, I‘m already annoyed! I probably should have paid closer attention to the subtitle. I was hoping for a full-life novel of Eliza‘s life, but taking a peek at the end, it seems to cover only the timeframe from meeting Hamilton - his death. Even though she lived 50 years longer! And what about her childhood? 😬

Scochrane26 This one is pretty good but mainly covers the Hamilton yrs. it would be nice if the authors of the several Eliza Hamilton books would include the rest of her life. (edited) 5y
alisiakae @Scochrane26 I do like it so far, but would definitely like to find something that is less Alexander-centric. She is a pretty amazing woman in her own right. 5y
Scochrane26 @4thhouseontheleft I guess authors/publishers think we only care about Hamilton yrs because of the musical. I didn‘t read other books about her so can‘t compare. After I read the info about her charity work, I wish that had been included. 5y

I need a change of pace, so I‘m settling in with this historical fiction. I am a HUGE fan of the musical, and I have also read Ron Chernow‘s Hamilton biography. I have been wanting to read something from Eliza‘s perspective (even if fictionalized) for a while now, and this was a swap gift!

It gets mixed reviews, so we shall see how I feel!

I started reading this one and finished it on audio. I liked Scott‘s writing style, though I had to roll my eyes at Eliza‘s unwavering devotion to her husband, Alexander Hamilton (I‘m not his biggest fan). While I wish there was more about Eliza without her husband, I still appreciate Scott bringing Eliza to life.

Lauram I‘m not a fan of his either! Did the McCullough book we read in the fall have any effect on your opinion? 5y
Lauram I recently read an Eliza Hamilton book and really wish the author had included more info about Eliza‘s life after Alexander died. 5y
Librarybelle @Lauram I wasn‘t a fan of Hamilton before reading John Adams. I‘ve read bits and pieces about Hamilton and have seen some documentaries...those really formed my opinion. I too wish more would be said about Eliza after her husband‘s death - she lived 50 more years and did amazing charitable work! 5y

The author did a great job telling the story of Hamilton from Eliza, or as he called her, Betsey's POV. A brilliant, flawed man, a founder and husband and so much more. And Eliza who lived many years past his unfortunate death. I recommend if you are interested in reading about her life with him

Whew, I rarely decide to not finish a book. However, this book's main character was so unrelatable. Her internal dialogue was pompous, shallow and so melodramatic that I just couldn't finish it. I am a fan of historic fiction and this book didn't cut it. I cringed at the thought of this real person being reduced to being Alexander Hamilton's cheerleader upon first sight.

I haven‘t read Hamilton yet or seen the musical so there was a lot of things about Hamilton that I didn‘t know. I loved seeing the events of Hamilton‘s life from the point of view of his wife. I think Eliza must have been a remarkable woman.

I am a HUGE Hamilton fan, so I can't wait to read this book! The musical ends with Eliza, and this story is all about her. Comes out in October, but I snagged a copy at BookExpo. (The well-loved planner, and postcards came from Redbubble.com/people/Yabamena - she has some killer, creative, nerdy art that I want to own every piece of!)
