The first book in one of the most remarkable epic fantasies ever written, the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Unbeliever. He called himself Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever because he dared not believe in the strange alternate world in which he suddenly found himself. Yet he was tempted to believe, to fight for the Land, to be the reincarnation of its greatest hero.... Last tonight is my L book. The 1st in the Thomas Covenant,The Unbeliever series, I first read it when I was a teenager. And boy is it dark. But shining through the whole trilogy is a beautiful thread of hope, carried by the people of the Land, even when they‘re at their bleakest. Powerful book with a strong message.

Kammbia1 I first read this book when I was 17. I‘m 50 now. These books were my gateway to becoming a reader. I was not a reader growing up in St. Petersburg Florida. I‘m always grateful for this book & the series being that for me.

I will admit that while I still love fantasy as a genre (and that includes magical realism. Those are fantasy books too.) I have become lukewarm towards epic or high fantasy these days. This book was a game changer.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thank you for sharing! 2y
Lizpixie @Kammbia1 me too! I think I was about 15 when my brother gave me this book & I‘m 50 now too. This, and the Magician series by Raymond.E.Feist, introduced me to high fantasy as well which also, I don‘t read as often anymore. And I also still love fantasy, magical realism in particular. Sounds like we have a lot in common as readers! Though I grew up in Sydney, Australia, is wonderful to know that readers are the same all over the world. 🇦🇺🇺🇸 2y
Kammbia1 @Lizpixie It does seem like we have read the same type of books. Thanks for posting this book for the letter “L.” 2y

“Are you a storyteller, Thomas Covenant?"
Absently he replied, "I was, once."
"And you gave it up? Ah, that is as sad a tale in three words as any you might have told me. But a life without a tale is like a sea without salt. How do you live?"
"I live."
"Another?" Foamfollower returned. "In two words, a story sadder than the #first. Say no more -- with one word you will make me weep.” #QuotsyApr21

He had never before removed his white gold wedding band; despite his divorce, and Joan‘s unanswering silence, he had kept the #ring on his finger. It was an icon of himself. It reminded him of where he had been and where he was — of promises made and broken, helplessness — and of his vestigial humanity. We are the Unhomed-
lost voyagers of the world,
In the land beyond the Sunbirth Sea
we lived and had our homes and grew-
and set our sails to the wind,
unheeding of the peril of the lost.
We are the Unhomed-
From home and hearth,
stone sacred dwellings crafted by our reverent hands,
we set our sails to the wind of the stars,
and carried life to lands across the earth,
careless of the peril of our loss.
⬇️

TK-421 We are the Unhomed-
lost voyagers of the world.
From desert shore to high cliff crag,
home of men and sylvan sea-edge faery lands-
from dream to dream we set our sails,
and smiled at the rainbow of our loss.
Now we are Unhomed,
bereft of root and kith and kin,
From other mysteries of delight,
we set our sails to resail our track;
but the winds of life blew not the way we chose,
and the land beyond the sea was lost.

Post a book that made an impression on you each day for 7 days.

Today‘s book is Lord Fouls Bane, a blend of magical realism & high fantasy that I read when I was 16yrs old. It taught me that heroes sometimes are not all good, they make bad decisions, hurt people and fight against their destiny, but they step up in the end.

Saltheart Foamfollower said boldly, "My Lord, we have not reached our end. True, the work of our lifetime has been to comprehend and consolidate the gains of our forebearers. Divorced, numb, impotent, isolated with nothing in his life but VSE and hyper vigilance to barely live through his days. He gets transported to The Land when he is almost hit by a police car. The Land is in dire peril and the only person who can save the Land is the one who believes the Land is a figment of his feverish mind. What will Covenant do? Will he go crazy? Will the Land prevail?

“Go away! Get out of here! You ought to be ashamed!”

Thomas Covenant‘s stride went on, as unfaltering as clockwork that had been wound to the hilt for just this purpose. But to himself he responded, Ashamed? Ashamed? His face contorted in a wild grimace. Beware! Outcast unclean!

“His sign said, Beware, uselessly, like warning that came too late.”

First published in 1977.The story of Thomas Covenant, leper. He is transported to another world, The Land. There‘s Orcs, Ur-Viles, magic, a white gold ring and even a bad guy, Lord Foul. There are similarities to The Lord of the Rings, but this is set in modern day and so much easier to read. I have re-read this many times and love it. It‘s part one of the First Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, The Unbeliever

Bookwomble I read the Chronicles as they were released, persuaded my friends to read it too, starting a little Covenant clique at my school - nerds! 🤓 6y

Today‘s #agameoffavorites offers a choice between Fantasy and Romance. Shockingly I chose Fantasy. My favorite epic fantasy series is The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. I‘ve read a quite a few interviews with Donaldson and while I can‘t remember a favorite his recommendation of An Alien Light turned me into a Nancy Kress fan. Luckily I own both of these gorgeous covers. I own 4 different versions of Lord Fouls Band. This is my fave.

Jovy Loved this! I haven‘t gotten round to the Last Chronicles though. Might have to re-read the First and Second since it‘s been so long! 6y

PedestalNix I've been thinking of re-reading Donaldson, especially since there's the new Covenant series since I read him last, but I wasn't sure how the books would hold up, and they're not a little depressing. Still, more books for the pile, I guess. 6y
TK-421 @PedestalNix I gave the first nine books a binge reread last year so that I could finally read the last book & I have to say that with each reread, I love these books more & more. I still find the first book is somewhat difficult to get through, but it's crucial to the rest of the series & Donaldson's love for the Land shines, pulling me through. In some ways, yes, they are depressing, yet they're also filled with hope, beauty, love, & courage. 6y

TK-421 @GarthRanzz @rwmg I gave the first 2 trilogies & first 3 books of the Last Chronicles a binge reread in 2017 so I could finally read The Last Dark. There are slow bits, but overall, I still love this series. LFB is the book I like least yet in some ways, the one I like most. There's so much love given to the world building that like TC, I find it impossible to resist falling under the Land's spell. 6y
