Lord Foul's Bane
Lord Foul's Bane | Stephen R. Donaldson
48 posts | 45 read | 17 to read
The first book in one of the most remarkable epic fantasies ever written, the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Unbeliever. He called himself Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever because he dared not believe in the strange alternate world in which he suddenly found himself. Yet he was tempted to believe, to fight for the Land, to be the reincarnation of its greatest hero.... THE CHRONICLES OF THOMAS COVENANT THE UNBELIEVER Book One: LORD FOUL'S BANE Book Two: THE ILLEARTH WAR Book Three: THE POWER THAT PRESERVES

“...he found his old straight razor. Its long, stainless steel #blade gleamed like a leer in the fluorescent light...but he stropped it deliberately, lathered his face, braced his timorous bones against the sink, and set the edge to his throat. It felt like a cold line of fire across his jugular, a keen threat of blood and gangrene and reactivated leprosy. If his half-unfingered hand slipped or twitched, the consequences might be extreme.”

They are given the Rites of Unfettering, and freed from all common demands, to quest after their own lore with the blessing of the Lords and the respect of all who love the Land. There must be someone out there who read this series. I was hooked as an alternative to Tolkien

Saltheart Foamfollower said boldly, "My Lord, we have not reached our end. True, the work of our lifetime has been to comprehend and consolidate the gains of our forebearers. But our labour will open the doors of the future. Our children and their children will gain because we have not lost heart, for faith and courage are the greatest gift that we can give to our descendants.” #Legacy #QuotsyJuly19

“The Mithil was narrow and brisk where the path first joined it, and spoke with wet rapidity to itself in a voice full of resonances and rumors. But as the river drew toward the plains, it broadened and slowed, became more philosophical in its low, self-communing mutter. Soon its voice no longer filled the air. Quietly it told itself its long tale as it rolled away on its quest for the sea.” #River #QuotsyJuly19

“Take back the ring. Be true. You need not fail.”

Divorced, numb, impotent, isolated with nothing in his life but VSE and hyper vigilance to barely live through his days. He gets transported to The Land when he is almost hit by a police car. The Land is in dire peril and the only person who can save the Land is the one who believes the Land is a figment of his feverish mind. What will Covenant do? Will he go crazy? Will the Land prevail?

“Go away! Get out of here! You ought to be ashamed!”

Thomas Covenant‘s stride went on, as unfaltering as clockwork that had been wound to the hilt for just this purpose. But to himself he responded, Ashamed? Ashamed? His face contorted in a wild grimace. Beware! Outcast unclean!

“His sign said, Beware, uselessly, like warning that came too late.”

First published in 1977.The story of Thomas Covenant, leper. He is transported to another world, The Land. There‘s Orcs, Ur-Viles, magic, a white gold ring and even a bad guy, Lord Foul. There are similarities to The Lord of the Rings, but this is set in modern day and so much easier to read. I have re-read this many times and love it. It‘s part one of the First Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, The Unbeliever

Bookwomble I read the Chronicles as they were released, persuaded my friends to read it too, starting a little Covenant clique at my school - nerds! 🤓 1y

Today‘s #agameoffavorites offers a choice between Fantasy and Romance. Shockingly I chose Fantasy. My favorite epic fantasy series is The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. I‘ve read a quite a few interviews with Donaldson and while I can‘t remember a favorite his recommendation of An Alien Light turned me into a Nancy Kress fan. Luckily I own both of these gorgeous covers. I own 4 different versions of Lord Fouls Band. This is my fave.

Jovy Loved this! I haven‘t gotten round to the Last Chronicles though. Might have to re-read the First and Second since it‘s been so long! 1y

PedestalNix I've been thinking of re-reading Donaldson, especially since there's the new Covenant series since I read him last, but I wasn't sure how the books would hold up, and they're not a little depressing. Still, more books for the pile, I guess. 2y
TK-421 @PedestalNix I gave the first nine books a binge reread last year so that I could finally read the last book & I have to say that with each reread, I love these books more & more. I still find the first book is somewhat difficult to get through, but it's crucial to the rest of the series & Donaldson's love for the Land shines, pulling me through. In some ways, yes, they are depressing, yet they're also filled with hope, beauty, love, & courage. 2y

TK-421 @GarthRanzz @rwmg I gave the first 2 trilogies & first 3 books of the Last Chronicles a binge reread in 2017 so I could finally read The Last Dark. There are slow bits, but overall, I still love this series. LFB is the book I like least yet in some ways, the one I like most. There's so much love given to the world building that like TC, I find it impossible to resist falling under the Land's spell. 2y

When the great horses--the Ranyhyn--reared to Covenant, the Ramen who served them were in awe. Usually the Ranyhyn chose their riders but here they were offering themselves for Covenant to choose one of them. He refused. He knew that while they were trying to honour him in recognition of the power he held--the wild magic of white gold--they were terrified of him. He was afraid too. I think I've read this series, the next #LizsLibraryLoves, over a dozen times since my brother gave me the first book at age 18.This is a high fantasy series with realism elements, with a lead character that's pretty awful.Thomas Covenant was a writer until a diagnosis of leprosy leaves him alone & rage filled. An encounter with an old man ends with him waking in a different reality called The Land where he's tempted by health & goes a little crazy.

One of my favourite fantasy series ever is Thomas Covenant The Unbeliever chronicles by Stephen Donaldson. My eldest brother gave me his copy of Lord Fouls Bane, the first book in series 1, when I was seventeen. The idea of a leper in the "real world" bitter & broken, being suddenly dropped into a world of magic, vitality & health and being devastated by the idea of hope, not the lack of it, was an earth shifting moment for me. #24in48 #litsy
