This is a very interesting plot with some really interesting characters. The first book gives you background and intros that draw you in and make you want to know more.
A dark story about a boy who doesn‘t belong anywhere trying to find a place for himself at a school for assassins.
Graphic novel about a boy who joins a school for assassins.
This is pretty violent and gory. It's set in the 80s and follows the boy's journey and a group of kids he falls in with.
I enjoyed the artwork and the dialogue was done really well and weaves in the main protagonist's back story with ease.
I would rate at 4 1/2 stars out of 5.

“This isn‘t a dress rehearsal, Marcus. You only get the one turn. Life is a series of unique opportunities.
It‘s our job to find the happiness in each one.”
Graphic novels be spitting straight fire and truth. 🔥🔥🔥 this quote really resonated with me and I‘m only just a few pages in!

I like big books and small dogs and this comparison brings me great joy.
I went browsing the library last night and went down a section of manga/graphic novels/comics that I don‘t normally explore and found this honkin‘ huge graphic novel collection! I‘ve not read Deadly Class before but the art and storyline drew me in immediately!

I really wanted to love this book because it had such a great premise (misfit teenagers attend a school for assassins in the 80s) and really cool artwork (the neon pinks and high contrast reflects an art pop 80s aesthetic) but the story and characters fell flat. I also could not get over the extreme drug usage and sexual situations that supposedly freshman aged characters engage in. Those things wouldn‘t bother me in adult characters though.
Settling for a #bathandbook tonight. Back to work tomorrow :( I‘ve had this graphic novel checked out for awhile on Hoopla and need to read it quickly before my borrow expires!
Fun and disturbing. Just what a good graphic novel should be! Love that it takes place in the 80‘s! Can‘t wait to read the rest! Thanks @TracyReadsBooks 🥰😘
Watching this series as well on SyFy
Love this series—hahaha, not sure what that says about me—and am eager to see how it translates to tv. We don‘t have cable so I‘ll have to wait to see it but it‘s all good, I have a couple more volumes to read and that should keep me busy...for a day or two of the wait...😂
So, I just missed the mark for my 2018 reading challenge. Tried to finish volume six of Deadly Class, but ran out of time before I was going out to spend the evening with friends. Bummer! I‘ll just have to give it another go in 2019. Happy New Year, Littens!
My first Christmas gift card haul came in! 🤘
I've read the first 3 trades of Deadly Class digitally before, but with the tv show starting up in January, I have wanted to read more! I figured it was time to pull the trigger on these deluxe oversized hardcovers. ❤️
I'm a pretty big Remender fan and I'm stoked to read more of this series! I'm also crazy excited for the tv show! 🤗
This fourth volume delivers the great twists that made me enjoy the second volume. Definitely feels like things are back to form, but the ending to this volume.... holy crap! #graphicnovel
I‘ll confess that this graphic novel just barely makes the cut as a pick for me. The artwork works so well, and the colorist deserves a lot of credit, too (the editor‘s letter at the beginning praises him, and rightly so). Story wise, I‘m not sure how much I buy into the setting. It‘s like Hogwarts but nothing supernatural and next-to-no development in this first volume (six issues). I hope volume two will explore the school more. #graphicnovel
Hahahaha. Wow. I mean, I don‘t know what you say about a group of kids at a school for assassins...a group of kids who decide to road trip... and groups of kids who are always mixed up in something...looking for revenge, looking for a good party, looking to cause trouble. As always with an ongoing series, I don‘t want to say too much but the story is entertaining & there are definitely some people who should be looking over their shoulders!
I wasn't head over heels for this comic-- it started slow and got more interesting as it went along but I just never fell in love-- but I'm excited to see what the TV adaptation is like.
In the 1980's, Marcus Lopez dreams of killing Ronald Reagan. He has been recruited into a school for assassins and his classmates are not only the horrible kids of your high school memories but also trained killers. Any levity is smothered by brooding teenage angst and the deadly seriousness of the school's dark arts. While the story and premise are interesting, it does not quite gel (at least at this point as it is the start of a series).
So I'm a little older than the kids in this story - but I still like the '80's setting. I've finished volume 2 and am still deciding how much I like it. Rick Remender has a tendency to go for the easy tropes, but there are great bits like this scene.
Ohh, definitely the best yet & probably my favorite volume so far. It‘s sophomore year & the King‘s Dominion School of the Deadly Arts is welcoming a new freshmen class. The Student Council led, mostly, by Shabnam runs the school, Saya has a new freshman to mentor—which she must do by staying one step ahead of her past...not easy. There‘s lots of murder & mayhem & good times. The art is good but it‘s the color & layout which really stand out.
Oh man, Marcus is NOT having a good day—year, really. See, it‘s the end of freshman year & time for finals but finals at Kings Dominion Atelier of the Deadly Arts aren‘t like those at other schools. Nope, this is a school for assassins. You only pass if you stay alive & make sure others do not. Marcus has a plan, though, & if he can stay alive, things might just get better. Easy enough, right? He just needs to stay alive...Definitely reading more!
I fear the Imperial Radch series has spoiled my next read...it was so good, I just don‘t think I‘m ready to pick up another novel. So, shifting gears and going with the tagged comic to give my brain, and all the thoughts and all the feels, some time to settle.
Let‘s start with the obvious—this cover is way cool. Really like it and what‘s on the pages inside. Marcus is living on the streets, a kid with a past—the type of past that gets him admitted to Kings Dominion Atelier of the Deadly Arts, a high school where teens train to be assassins. And go. The artwork is good, though not my favorite, the story is compelling, the characters, Marcus especially, interesting & I definitely want to keep reading.
The worst thing about finishing a book/series as immersive & emotional as Y The Last Man (& yes, as promised, I got teary) is settling on what to read next. The real reason is I don‘t want to shortchange whatever comes AFTER. My fear is always that I won‘t or can‘t give the “after” book the attention it deserves. All of which is to say, I‘m going with another graphic novel. This one is about teen assassins. Another Chicago Comics recommendation.
School for assassins....yes please!!! I look forward to picking up volume 2 after I move (not requesting anything new from the library right now so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle from one place to the next) and seeing where else this story goes.
Today I started the #LetsGetGraphicWeeklongMarathon with @TricksyTails and @Clwojick . I‘m new to graphic novels but am excited to dive further into reading them. My library only allows 4 credits per month on Hoopla and the library itself and Overdrive have very few choices so I signed up for a free trial with Comixology so that I would have more choices. So here is my #TBR (so far). I‘m excited to get started!! #LetMeSeeYourStack
Borrowed this from Hoopla last night. I'm tired and not feeling superb so my brain isn't feeling like putting the words together to properly sum up my thoughts. We'll just go with the facts then. Deadly Class is dark and violent, but there's something about it that makes me want to read more.
Usually when I'm reading I'm either doing so silently with one or both of the cats curled up alongside me or aloud with one of my daughters.

*Added note: Tagged book is one I am reading alone, not with the 11 or 13 year old. 😜*
This was strange, violent, funny, trippy, and good in a weird way! How can you go wrong with 80s, drugs, and teen assassins? You can't! #24in48
I have a huge stack of single issue comics I haven't had time to read. #litsypartyofone (Technically party of 2, but I won't be a party of one any time soon so...)
@Ambrosnazzy
I picked up this comic after a friend of mine gave it a glowing review. Now we'll see if I agree with his assessment. The beautiful breakfast is courtesy my wonderful girlfriend.
This one had a lot of promise from the summary. A school for assassins! Sounded really fun. And it was at the start. But it ended up being a lot more racially charged then I was expecting? And a lot more about drugs?
Bloodiest volume yet, and that's saying something. But in the midst of all the violence and chaos, this was my favorite scene. That's what you get for knocking The B-52s.
Definitely not my favorite. Surprisingly, the school for teenage assassins thing is starting to feel kind of overdone to me. I found the art unexceptional, but inoffensive and pretty easy to follow.
I love this series! A homeless orphaned teen ends up in an assassin's academy in SF to learn how to kill. His ideal target? Ronald Reagan. Lol High school is still a crazy place with killer cliques. In this volume, they head to Vegas for an acid-filled road trip with a specific murder in mind.
An homage to Hunter S. Thompson when our hero Marcus ends up trippin' in Vegas. His friends from the Assassin Academy take him to the Circus Circus Hotel - I can't think of a more uncomfortable place to be on acid. Lol unless you live clowns that is....
I love that the Assassin Academy is set in SF. Also love that kids are still kids, even if they are training to be killers.
