Deadly Class 1
Deadly Class 1: Reagan Youth | Rick Remender, Wesley Craig
""Deadly Class" is a solid read for those who want a combination of Mark Millar's "Wanted" and Harry Potter with Garth Ennis's ("Preacher") style." - "Library Journal "(Starred) "A good start to a wicked series." -- "Booklist" It's 1987. Marcus Lopez hates school. His grades suck. The jocks are hassling his friends. He can't focus in class. But the jocks are the children of Joseph Stalin's top assassin, the teachers are members of an ancient league of assassins, the class he's failing is "Dismemberment 101," and his crush has a double-digit body count. Welcome to the most brutal high school on earth, where the world's top crime families send the next generation of assassins to be trained. Murder is an art. Killing is a craft. At Kings Dominion School for the Deadly Arts, the dagger in your back isn't always metaphorical. Collecting the first arc of the most critically acclaimed new series of 2014, by writer Rick Remender ("Black Science," "Fear Agent") and rising star artist Wesley Craig ("Batman").

Adults only, please.

Gen X vicious graphic urban horror tale. If you read the book blurb troubled teens get offered an education in becoming assassins.

There will be blood & murder. Beatings, allusions to sexual abuse.

That tale takes place over 12 volumes. I‘ve already picked up the compendium. All 1368 pgs of it. 😳

Graphic novel about a boy who joins a school for assassins.

This is pretty violent and gory. It's set in the 80s and follows the boy's journey and a group of kids he falls in with.

I enjoyed the artwork and the dialogue was done really well and weaves in the main protagonist's back story with ease.

I would rate at 4 1/2 stars out of 5.

I like big books and small dogs and this comparison brings me great joy.
I went browsing the library last night and went down a section of manga/graphic novels/comics that I don‘t normally explore and found this honkin‘ huge graphic novel collection! I‘ve not read Deadly Class before but the art and storyline drew me in immediately!

I really wanted to love this book because it had such a great premise (misfit teenagers attend a school for assassins in the 80s) and really cool artwork (the neon pinks and high contrast reflects an art pop 80s aesthetic) but the story and characters fell flat. I also could not get over the extreme drug usage and sexual situations that supposedly freshman aged characters engage in. Those things wouldn‘t bother me in adult characters though.

Saknicole Did you watch the rest of the show? I really want to after watching those first two episodes. 6y
Kimberlone @Saknicole no I‘ve only seen those episodes we watched together but I think the show is probably better than the graphic novel. I will definitely keep watching once it‘s on a streaming option. Did you see outlander is on Netflix now?! 6y
Saknicole Yesss! Outlander for life! But only the first two seasons 😣 The whole season of Deadly Class is available on SyFy online yo. If I had the internet's I'd be on it already 6y

Love this series—hahaha, not sure what that says about me—and am eager to see how it translates to tv. We don‘t have cable so I‘ll have to wait to see it but it‘s all good, I have a couple more volumes to read and that should keep me busy...for a day or two of the wait...😂

My first Christmas gift card haul came in! 🤘

I've read the first 3 trades of Deadly Class digitally before, but with the tv show starting up in January, I have wanted to read more! I figured it was time to pull the trigger on these deluxe oversized hardcovers. ❤️

I'm a pretty big Remender fan and I'm stoked to read more of this series! I'm also crazy excited for the tv show! 🤗

I‘ll confess that this graphic novel just barely makes the cut as a pick for me. The artwork works so well, and the colorist deserves a lot of credit, too (the editor‘s letter at the beginning praises him, and rightly so). Story wise, I‘m not sure how much I buy into the setting. It‘s like Hogwarts but nothing supernatural and next-to-no development in this first volume (six issues). I hope volume two will explore the school more. #graphicnovel

BillBlume Side note: the main character Marcus is a freshman in high school in the fall of 1987, which was also when I started high school. I get a kick out of that. 6y

Hahahaha. Wow. I mean, I don‘t know what you say about a group of kids at a school for assassins...a group of kids who decide to road trip... and groups of kids who are always mixed up in something...looking for revenge, looking for a good party, looking to cause trouble. As always with an ongoing series, I don‘t want to say too much but the story is entertaining & there are definitely some people who should be looking over their shoulders!

In the 1980's, Marcus Lopez dreams of killing Ronald Reagan. He has been recruited into a school for assassins and his classmates are not only the horrible kids of your high school memories but also trained killers. Any levity is smothered by brooding teenage angst and the deadly seriousness of the school's dark arts. While the story and premise are interesting, it does not quite gel (at least at this point as it is the start of a series).

So I'm a little older than the kids in this story - but I still like the '80's setting. I've finished volume 2 and am still deciding how much I like it. Rick Remender has a tendency to go for the easy tropes, but there are great bits like this scene.

Ohh, definitely the best yet & probably my favorite volume so far. It‘s sophomore year & the King‘s Dominion School of the Deadly Arts is welcoming a new freshmen class. The Student Council led, mostly, by Shabnam runs the school, Saya has a new freshman to mentor—which she must do by staying one step ahead of her past...not easy. There‘s lots of murder & mayhem & good times. The art is good but it‘s the color & layout which really stand out.

Oh man, Marcus is NOT having a good day—year, really. See, it‘s the end of freshman year & time for finals but finals at Kings Dominion Atelier of the Deadly Arts aren‘t like those at other schools. Nope, this is a school for assassins. You only pass if you stay alive & make sure others do not. Marcus has a plan, though, & if he can stay alive, things might just get better. Easy enough, right? He just needs to stay alive...Definitely reading more!

I fear the Imperial Radch series has spoiled my next read...it was so good, I just don‘t think I‘m ready to pick up another novel. So, shifting gears and going with the tagged comic to give my brain, and all the thoughts and all the feels, some time to settle.

Let‘s start with the obvious—this cover is way cool. Really like it and what‘s on the pages inside. Marcus is living on the streets, a kid with a past—the type of past that gets him admitted to Kings Dominion Atelier of the Deadly Arts, a high school where teens train to be assassins. And go. The artwork is good, though not my favorite, the story is compelling, the characters, Marcus especially, interesting & I definitely want to keep reading.

The worst thing about finishing a book/series as immersive & emotional as Y The Last Man (& yes, as promised, I got teary) is settling on what to read next. The real reason is I don‘t want to shortchange whatever comes AFTER. My fear is always that I won‘t or can‘t give the “after” book the attention it deserves. All of which is to say, I‘m going with another graphic novel. This one is about teen assassins. Another Chicago Comics recommendation.

Borrowed this from Hoopla last night. I'm tired and not feeling superb so my brain isn't feeling like putting the words together to properly sum up my thoughts. We'll just go with the facts then. Deadly Class is dark and violent, but there's something about it that makes me want to read more.

I love this series! A homeless orphaned teen ends up in an assassin's academy in SF to learn how to kill. His ideal target? Ronald Reagan. Lol High school is still a crazy place with killer cliques. In this volume, they head to Vegas for an acid-filled road trip with a specific murder in mind.
