The Art of Starving
The Art of Starving | Sam J. Miller
Funny, haunting, beautiful, relentless and powerful, The Art of Starving is a classic in the making.Book Riot Matt hasnt eaten in days. His stomach stabs and twists inside, pleading for a meal, but Matt wont give in. The hunger clears his mind, keeps him sharpand he needs to be as sharp as possible if hes going to find out just how Tariq and his band of high school bullies drove his sister, Maya, away. Matts hardworking mom keeps the kitchen crammed with food, but Matt can resist the siren call of casseroles and cookies because he has discovered something: the less he eats the more he seems to have . . . powers. The ability to see things he shouldnt be able to see. The knack of tuning in to thoughts right out of peoples heads. Maybe even the authority to bend time and space. So what is lunch, really, compared to the secrets of the universe? Matt decides to infiltrate Tariqs life, then use his powers to uncover what happened to Maya. All he needs to do is keep the hunger and longing at bay. No problem. But Matt doesnt realize there are many kinds of hungerand he isnt in control of all of them. A darkly funny, moving story of body image, addiction, friendship, and love, Sam J. Millers debut novel will resonate with any reader whos ever craved the power that comes with self-acceptance.

This book was intense in a way I wasn't excepting, but please don't ask me why because I do not know how to explain it in words. But Matt's story, which is also the author's story, drove home my belief we need to better accept mental health and learn how to help those close to us.

Just really really have to say this book is so absolutely freaking great. I loved every bit of it! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Read it pretty quickly, even did an assignment for my English class to where we had to do journal entries. And I used this book for 7 days. Today being my last one. I had so much to say and so many great quotes. For example "Rule #43 You are never alone, no matter how alone you think you are."

Finished up this audiobook with some help from Fat Louie (and by help I do mean difficulty breathing he‘s a very large cat😂). I‘m definitely still processing the book- I enjoyed some parts of this book a lot, but it was a tough one as well. Definitely time for something lighter now! About 9 hours done of #24in48 📚

In a very timely #24in48 #hour12 #audiobook challenge, I just got back from a long (sweaty) walk while listening to this on audio. I got this on sale from Libro.fm, but I‘ve also used a family audible account sometimes. This book is tough and I struggle with the theme, but the narrator is great! It‘s one I‘m not sure if finish on paper but I‘m almost done with it now on audio.

This is about a gay teen with an eating disorder living in a small town. A lot of it is relatable and a good discussion on body image issues among men. Hurts your heart a bit though.

Was in the mood for some more queer YA after reading A Gentleman‘s Guide to Vice and Virtue so I picked these two up at work today. I feel like I‘m going to need a lot of light reading to get through this holiday 😰

I saw Sam Miller speak at a book festival this year and he was reeeeally good so I‘m glad we had his book in.

This award winning debut is intense. Matt is gay (in a town that isn‘t too accepting), concerned about his sister who left without a word (& what the boy who was the last to see her might know about it), & not eating...much. Matt refuses to believe he has an eating disorder even as the less he eats, the greater his powers grow. A powerful, heartbreaking YA book dealing with body image, eating disorders, toxic masculinity, sexuality & more.

This book won the 2017 Andre Norton Award for Outstanding Young Adult Science Fiction or Fantasy Book. It comes with rave reviews so I‘m looking forward to a good read. Assuming I finish, this will be a Book 20 of 50 in my epic quest to shrink my TBR stacks.

Clwojick Ooooo. Let me know how it is! I‘ve been meaning to listen to it on hoopla 6y

So, I have had no time to read for fun the past week or so, but I did meet my daughter at Chapters today for a coffee and a chat and ended up bringing these home...

Enjoying this more than I thought I would, in so much as one can enjoy an eating disorder book.

Matt is a young teen who is gay and has to come to terms with his eating disorder, loving someone who is scared of coming out as gay as well his dysfunctional family and his missing sister. The book is full of mystery and suspense that kept me turning page after page just to know what happens next in the story.

A lot of times I ended up being teary eyed and just stared into space at how touching the words and emotions in this story were.

REVIEW · ★★★★☆
Full review at howlinglibraries.com!

An own-voice novel about a gay teen with an eating disorder? If you know my taste in contemporary novels, you had to know this one sparked my interest immediately! Thankfully, the lovely people at HarperTeen were so kind as to send me this gorgeous finished copy in exchange for an honest review!

howlinglibraries While I did enjoy this book for the most part, I had serious issues with a few tropes, as well as the fact that the main character develops superpowers as a direct result of his ED. It felt incredibly triggering and bizarre, to be frank - almost like a glorification of anorexia. I think I got the social points Sam was trying to make in the book, but I don't think they were worth the potential damage done. 7y
wyvik Sup Litten?...Umm.. that intro was awkward... well, I guess I'll get to the point: If you don't have a pen pal and you would like one, I'm having #Litsypenpals 2.0 sign ups on my page! I created it because many Littens didn't have pen pals and really wanted them! There will be more information on my page regarding the pen pals! Thank you and I hope you sign up! 🤗🤗 7y
