My Glory Was I Had Such Friends
My Glory Was I Had Such Friends: A Memoir | Amy Silverstein
In this moving memoir about the power of friendship and the resilience of the human spirit, Amy Silverstein tells the story of the extraordinary group of women who supported her as she waited on the precipice for a life-saving heart transplant. Nearly twenty-six years after receiving her first heart transplant, Amy Silversteins donor heart plummeted into failure. If she wanted to live, she had to take on the grueling quest for a new heartimmediately. A shot at survival meant uprooting her life and moving across the country to California. When her friends heard of her plans, there was only one reaction: Im there. Nine remarkable womenJoy, Jill, Leja, Jody, Lauren, Robin, Valerie, Ann, and Janeput demanding jobs and pressing family obligations on hold to fly across the country and be by Amys side. Creating a calendar spreadsheet, the womensome of them strangers to one anotherpassed the baton of friendship, one to the next, and headed straight and strong into the battle to help save Amys life. Empowered by the kind of empathy that can only grow with age, these women, each knowing Amy from different stages of her life, banded together to provide her with something that medicine alone could not. Sleeping on a cot beside her bed, they rubbed her back and feet when the pain was unbearable, adorned her room with death-distracting decorations, and engaged in their best talks ever. They saw the true measure of their friends strength, and they each responded in kind. My Glory Was I Had Such Friends is a tribute to these women and the intense hours they spent togetherhours of heightened emotion and self-awareness, where everything was laid bare. Candid and heartrending, this once-in-a-lifetime story of connection and empathy is a powerful reminder of the ultimate importance of showing up for those we love.

30 book recommendations in 30 days...

Day 17: Similar to yesterday, this one really helps you think about what is most important in life, written by a woman waiting for a heart transplant. I cried so many times. IRL, I've watched my BIL deteriorate and inch closer to death waiting for a transplant (thankfully he received one in time), and also sat with a cousin as he died after a transplant. This book is a must read! #30recsin30days

3/5 ⭐️ I get uncomfortable when talking about medicine so this book probably just wasn‘t for me. It was an interesting look into the life of someone struggling with a serious illness. Seeing their thoughts and reactions to how others treated them was interesting.

Listening to this on a long drive. I expected this book to be much more about the relationships with her friends because of the title. That has been present, but very much in the background or interspersed with memories. Hearing her perspective on illness and how others react has made me rethink the way I react to people.

So this is about Amy Silverstein‘s need for a second heart transplant at the age of 50. Her first transplant heart has started to fail and she and her husband Scott need to move from NYC to California. Instantly causing her friends to take action so that she will always have one of them with her during this entire period so that she is never without them. This is a wonderful tale of friendships and what they will do when they are needed #litsyAtoZ

One of my friends since elementary school was diagnosed with breast cancer, so I asked for this book for Christmas. It‘s so hard having a sick friend and I know it‘s even harder being the one who is sick. I‘m glad we all have each other for support, but it really sucks this is happening. What a bummer review.

Wonderful memoir about the power and value of friendship. Amy Silverman made it 25 years with her first heart transplant. When it began failing, she and her husband had to move from NY to LA while she waits for a donor heart. Her friends get together and come up with a calendar so that they will always have someone there to help. Late night conversations, tough moments, and shenanigans -- it's the friendship that matters.

#TBRtemptation post 3! Recently released. Silverstein tells the story of the group of women who supported her while waiting for a heart transplant. Her shot at saving her life required uprooting to California. Her friends were there for her: Joy, Jill, Leja, Jody, Lauren, Robin, Valerie, Ann, and Jane. Creating a spreadsheet, they took turns away from jobs and family to assist in daily mundane tasks to doctor visits. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Donnasmiles Oh my...I hope you like it and my wish would be that your support system is a strong one like the author. I recently lost my husband (pancreatic cancer) and I was in awe of how many stepped in to help, encourage, and support both of us. Best wishes to you on your journey. 7y

Listening to this audiobook memoir about a woman suffering from donor heart failure and how her #girlfriends rally around her in amazing ways. I don't think audio is the best format for this one and may have to try it again in print. #anditsaugust

When Amy finds out her heart is failing 26 years after her first heart transplant 9 of her girlfriends provide her with the spreadsheet. It details when each of them will uproot their lives to be in California for her and her husband Scott as support. No day is left uncovered.

Tears in the gym, at work, in the car, and while cooking dinner. These women are powerful. I hug my girlfriends tighter now. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

auntie_jenn i listen to a lot of audio books, but this one is addictive. i must have sat in the car for 10 minutes so i could finish the pacemaker section. 7y

As I am writing this, I still have tears in my eyes. This is one of the most beautiful books I have read and by far the best book of 2017. You will laugh a lot and you will cry a lot more. This story takes a whole new level of the power of friendship.

Several years ago I read Sick Girl by Amy Silverstein, a memoir that chronicled her out of the blue sickness and heart transplant that followed. She has written a follow-up memoir surviving long past the decade most heart transplant patients survive. I'm glad I get a chance to reconnect with this author and am hopeful that her story will end as happily as possible.
