Fourth Bear
Fourth Bear | Jasper Fforde
The inimitable Jasper Fforde gives readers another delightful mash-up of detective fiction and nursery rhyme, returning to those mean streets where no character is innocent. The Gingerbreadman--sadist, psychopath, cookie--is on the loose in Reading, but that's not who Detective Jack Spratt and Sergeant Mary Mary are after. Instead, they've been demoted to searching for missing journalist -Goldy- Hatchett. The last witnesses to see her alive were the reclusive Three Bears, and right away Spratt senses something furry--uh, funny--about their story, starting with the porridge. The Fourth Bear is a delirious new romp from our most irrepressible fabulist.

Themes: Quirky & Humorous, Nursery Rhymes in the Real World, Discworld-esque

Book 2 in the Nursery Crime series is good but not as great as Book 1 (“The Big Over Easy”). I enjoyed it and never thought of putting it down to read something else, it just wasn‘t as great. A solid 4 stars and worth reading if you enjoyed Book 1 👍

My latest Pango book order arrived and I‘m so happy to continue the Nursery Crime books with “The Fourth Bear” 😁 The others just jumped in my cart, craziest thing 🤪😉

emz711 Never heard of pango 10mo
Aims42 @emz711 It‘s a used book marketplace that offers a lot more transparency on book conditions than others I‘ve found. If you‘re interested in checking it out, this is the app for apple users (I don‘t have an android): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pangobooks-buy-sell-books/id1546752104 10mo
AmyG I thought the Chabon book was wonderful. 10mo
Aims42 @AmyG Yay! I‘m so glad to hear that 😍 I really liked “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” so figured I‘d give this a try 10mo
Tamra Love those covers! 10mo

Mehso-so

I'm torn about this one. I love this author. The writing itself is very good. The jokes are funny. The book as a whole (storyline, plot)...meh. Stole this off a coworker. I'll put it back where I got it now.

A coworker found this in the library at work. And I never actually read it. So it's coming home with me.

"If he didn't deal with her, the Jack Spratt series was likely to stop abruptly at the second volume. No third book and definitely no boxed set."

Oh no - kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy! ?

The second book about the Nursery Crimes Division is just as good as the first one. It started strong, then lost a bit of steam in the middle, but the showdown was brillant. I hope Fforde will get around to writing the promised third book.

cobwebmoth I hope he does write another one. I really liked this series. 6y

'They walked round to the back of the car and Dorian opened the boot. Inside was a finely painted oil of the same car, but in much shabbier condition.'

Dorian Gray as a used car dealer. The car is in mint condition, but has an oil painting in the boot. That's my kind of humour and exactly what I expect from Fforde 😂

Redwritinghood He‘s so great. 😂😂 6y

Molly_the_mezzo Jasper Fforde is one of my all time favorites, and this book is so much fun! 7y
Avanders @Molly_the_mezzo oooh good to know! I‘ve only read 2 so far... can‘t wait to read more! Have you read 7y
Molly_the_mezzo @Avanders Shades of Grey is on my top ten favorite books, lifetime. It‘s a little more serious than the Nursery Crime books or the Thursday Next series, but still has his trademark wit. I can‘t recommend it highly enough. 7y
Avanders @Molly_the_mezzo nice! It‘s one of the 2 I‘ve actually read ☺️ I found it so interesting and well done.. and I‘d agree, a bit more somber ... the other one I‘ve read is the first in the Thursday Next series.... must get on the second soon!! 7y
Molly_the_mezzo @Avanders All of his books are amazing. The Dragonslayer series is good too. I think it‘s technically marketed as young adult, but it‘s not juvenile in any way. Just a great author. Enjoy! 7y

Green, glorious green! #30daysofreadathon

I'm so pleased that I was able to repurpose my animal kingdom 'tigger is that you' mug after a flying bottle of cinnamon kamikazed out of the kitchen cupboard to take a chunk out it (grrr!) and the plant (named Mother of Thousands) is doing so well!

Bloomingjen i have a tshirt with that on it 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Bloomingjen, it such a good design! 7y
batsy Oh, that mug 💚🔍🐯 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @batsy, isn't it amazing! I was so mad to break it at home in Melbourne after I successfully managed to get it from DisneyWorld in Orlando all the way home to Australia in my suitcase! 7y

All the #sequelplease posts yesterday reminded me of this series and the "The Last Great Tortoise Race" sequel that I've been stalking in Goodreads since 2010. It looks like he promised to "get around to it" in a May 2016 web chat, but come on! ?

drokka I too wished he'd be quicker writing these, but I guess he was hit by different muses all this time. 7y
