Trying to get into this, but it's slow going. But some of the jokes remind me of the mother goose play my son was in in 8th grade

Driving to book club in an hour to discuss my pick for this month, and I just finished the treat I‘m bringing.

I could totally lie and say that the cupcakes are the broken egg of Humpty Dumpty and the wall he was on, but really I just wanted to play around with flavors! 😂

TK421 I loved the Jack Spratt novels! I hope that he writes more in this series. 7mo

I absolutely love this author's sense of humor. Great story but I admit I loved the 2 books in the Eyre Affair I've read better. I just got Shades of Grey I'll read next of his. I'm still sad about this cover tho. Kindle books deserve better covers!

#MayMovieMagic Day 28: Iphigene‘s review: “The Big Over #Easy is a classic whodunit detective story set in an unusual place where nursery rhyme characters come to life & some of them are quite shady characters. I‘ve never read any of Jasper Fforde‘s novels, but this novel has made me a fan. He makes the uncommon seem usual & makes the whole case of the dead egg a believable crime story worth your investigation.” https://wp.me/pDlzr-8R

Cinfhen This does sound interesting!!! I‘m thinking @Reggie might find this one intriguing 😊 8mo

LA_Mead @Suzze “The Big Over Easy” was actually the first novel that Fforde wrote. I think it‘s pretty good for a first novel, but his subsequent books are fantastic. 1y

Jack Spratt from the Nursery Crime Division has to solve the murder of Humpty Dumpty, who fell from a wall...
That tells you everything you need to know! 😂 The book is not quite as bonkers as the Thursday Next novels (they're kind of related, though), but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I had a lot of fun, even if I had to look up some characters from English nursery rhymes.
It's my pick for 'murder investigation' for the #SFFTBRChallenge.

jillrhudy This was so cute. I wish Nursery Crimes had continued. 2y
PickwickPlockPlock @jillrhudy Don't give up hope, Fforde is writing again, so maybe in 3, 4 years he will finish the trilogy 📚 2y

Duologies, trilogies and more for #RiotGrams was hard, I stared at my shelves for ages.

I‘d quite like to read the conclusion (The Last Great Tortoise Race) of the Nursery Crime Division someday... it‘s not mentioned on Jasper Fforde‘s website though and I went pretty far down an internet rabbit hole before I found him promising that it would happen in a guardian article from 2016.

PickwickPlockPlock That reminds me that I haven't actually read the Nursery Crime books! 2y
smilingshelves I love these books (and pretty much everything Jasper Fforde has written)! 2y

smilingshelves I agree! His production pace seems to have slowed down monumentally... 2y
PickwickPlockPlock @smilingshelves I looked up his website and there's this bit: 'As I emerge from my creative hiatus of 2015-17 (Aaargh) I will be adding more to the website which will be the first port of call if you want to find stuff out.' 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @PickwickPlockPlock, his website is so hilarious, I remember thinking it was cool when I first visited it in the early 00s but I look at it now and just find it hard to navigate 😂 oh well! Hopefully he‘s reenergised after his hiatus and just starts publishing like mad ☺️ 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @smilingshelves, hopefully lots publishing in 2019/20 😋 2y

drokka This is a spin-off of the Thursday Next series. You probably don't need to know too much about the others (depending how far you are in that series. If you've read Well of Lost Plots you're good) 2y

from eggs to animals to homicidal gingerbread-men, there are a whole bunch of #anthropomorphiccharacters in Jasper Fforde's hardboiled Nursery Crime series.

slightly different style than Fforde's Thursday Next series, though his signature humor and wit is abundant throughout. I read this book in 8th grade and was immediately hooked on all Fforde's books forevermore.

(thanks for letting me borrow your book @courtneybee !)

Jack Spratt and the Nursery Crime Division first appear in Fforde's other series Thursday Next (one of my all-time faves) as a book in the book world. We see the book from the inside as Thursday helps revive the stale detective story.

The (real world) series centers around nursery rhymes told as hard-boiled detective stories (e.g. the murder of Humpty Dumpty).

All sorts of #bookwithinabook layers here!

This is an easy #FunFridayPhoto. Clever funny vs laugh out loud funny, this book exists in a universe where fairy tale characters are real. Mary Mary and Detective Jack Spratt of the Nursery Crime Division are called to investigate the possible murder of Humpty Dumpty, known by all as a very nice egg who keeps to himself. And the truth is far more insane than you'd ever guess.
