This book made me cry like a little kid, real tears and real hard. It was great, maybe not for everyone but it was perfect for me

⭐️⭐️ So I bought this book strictly because it was written by David Duchovny who I love! I knew this book wasn‘t going to be my cup of tea because I really hate sports, but I thought the father/son bonding plot line would save it for me. It did not. It takes place during the ‘78 World Series and the father is dying of lung cancer but is staying alive to see his beloved Red Sox go to the big game. This was my #doublespin book No. 20.

TheAromaofBooks Sorry this one wasn't great, but at least it's off the list!! 4y
mollyrotondo @TheAromaofBooks I‘m glad I finished it too. I‘ll probably still keep it just in case I ever get a chance to meet David Duchovny at a book signing 🤩 4y
TheAromaofBooks I've only gone to a couple of book signings, but I enjoy taking an old favorite for them to sign rather than having them autograph whatever their newest book is! 4y
mollyrotondo @TheAromaofBooks I know! It makes the moment extra special. I have another book by him which looks more my speed. This will probably show up on my bookspin list soon lol 4y

good story, and well-written, but I couldn‘t tell if it was intentionally pretentious because the main character was pretentious, or because the author is.

#TBR Shellie #LiteraryLuck Already reading Oreo,Trailblazer and The Lonely City.Robber Bride and Light a Penny Candle are Books I need to finish for my first quarter #Booked2019.As to Bucky, it‘s almost baseball season!Took in a Cubs/Dbacks game on Tuesday.⚾️⚾️

I actually really liked this story and am surprised at Duchovny‘s talent for writing. I‘m only marking it so-so because his descriptions of women are...bad.

Anna40 Oh boy 6y
tholmz @Anna40 I knowww. Especially because the lady is Latinx, it felt even more UGH. But I liked the story otherwise! 6y

I just read another contender for my favorite book of the year. I am a baseball fan, and I am a David Duchovny fan, but I didn‘t expect to love this book as much as I did. I started it last night and could not stop.

A funny, moving, beautifully written, wonderful story about family and love. And baseball. I was rooting for the damn Sox, and I‘m a hardcore Cards fan who knew how ‘78 went for Boston. 😂

Also, David‘s narration: 😍

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TricksyTails 😍 David Duchovny ♥️♥️♥️ 7y

Crystalblu Would I like it if I can't stand baseball?! 7y
sprainedbrain @Crystalblu I‘m not sure... it‘s really about the main character‘s relationship with his dad, but baseball is definitely woven in there. If you can‘t stand baseball, that may be annoying. 😂 7y

"In high school, he would go to the library, close his eyes, and walk blindly through the stacks, reaching his hand out, pulling a book at random, and forcing himself to read it as if sent by God."

Hey! I still do this! It's fun and a fabulous way to explore genres and topics you might otherwise avoid.

Leftcoastzen Love it! 7y
LauraBrook I used to do this! Man, maybe I should start doing it again!? 7y
Suet624 @LauraBrook I also like the fact that David Duchovny might do this too! I can't wait to see what book you pick. 😁 7y
batsy Cool! I get a kick out of the fact that Duchovny has a Masters in English literature. I really need to check out his novels 😀 7y
Suet624 @batsy I know! I've read that this one is is a bit better than his first book but I haven't read it. This took a minute to get into and then I couldn't put it down. 7y

I purchased the book because I remember Bucky F*cking Dent and how he tore our Red Sox hearts up in 1978. In Boston he will forever have that middle name. Duchovny as the author was just an added bonus. If you like witty dialogue and the exploration of a father/son relationship, this book is up your alley. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the story. No baseball experience necessary.

AmyG I see his name and laugh. My mother was a big Mets fan and had a huge crush on Bucky Dent. When his house was put up for sale a few towns over from us in NJ, she tried talking my father into buying it. He didn't. ;) Not sure she would be happy with me reading this book. (edited) 7y
Suet624 @AmyG That's so funny. He's actually only mentioned a few times in the book so I think you'd be safe. I almost posted a photo of Bucky. He was a good looking guy. I can see why your mom had a crush on him. 😂 7y
saresmoore I‘ve no idea who Bucky Dent is, but I love David Duchovny! 😍 7y

Suet624 @saresmoore I do too. The beginning of the book was a bit slow but then the humor and emotion kicked in and I found myself laughing out loud more than I expected to. 7y

I wasn't so sure about this one, but I took a leap of faith. The book takes place in 1978 where Ted, who although estranged from his father, learns that Marty has terminal lung cancer moves back home to take care of him. When Marty starts to take a turn for the worse, Ted comes up with an idea to make his father believe that his beloved Red Sox are winning, and may be in contention for the Championship.

I ended up really liking this book, especially as an audiobook. While it definitely is a guy thing - father & son finally bond as father approaches the end of his life - it's also a really good snapshot of NYC at this time & place. Definitely worth a read/listen just for that.
And in particular, this came to life for me as we heard the father's feelings during his son's early days. If you make it that far, I think you'll find yourself hooked 🙂

AmyG This book makes me laugh. My Mom was a huge Mets fan. She had such a crush on Bucky Dent. He lived in NJ and when his house went up for sale Mom dragged Dad to look at it. She wanted to buy it so badly. ;) 8y

So I'm at a Rainiers game, yet I'm still being bookish 📚. I'm sitting in the midst of librarians (because it's Library Night at the Stadium), so it's cool to talk about books still. So I made friends & talked up David Duchovny's new one. Cos that's what I do 😏⚾️📚

**"Dios mio, you're such a prude Ted. We're just body parts, that's all we are, body parts and souls." ** I am really looking forward to talking about this one tonight at book club. It's not often I come across a character arc that makes me truly conflicted, but Mariana Blades, RN has done the job admirably and I need to talk it out.

DaphneAdair I'm curious about how book group went! 8y
Rabbitandraven @crankyisgood It was good. I hadn't expected to walk away from this thinking of David Duchovny as a thoughtful writer as I ended up considering him. The text was funny and shot through with themes that made me think about recovery and personal growth in ways that I really appreciated. I think the only closure I'll get with Mariana, though, is to just forget I read the epilogue. 8y
DaphneAdair Interesting! If I pick it up, I will let you know what I think. Probably won't be able to stop myself from reading the epilogue. 8y

Help! Crisis! Total reader's block👎🏼 All different genres and nothing is appealing. Taking them back to library today 😕

CaitlinSiem Novellas really help me if I get stuck because it's such a quick read that I can power through. Also, there are a lot of fun anthologies out these days. Maybe something like that can break the wall down? Or an old favorite. 8y

I wish that there was a rate the book option that expressed "loved so much that I will obnoxiously tell any looking for a book that they should read this". +
