Several hours into #DeweysReadathon and I've finished two books.

Time to pick through my pile and choose the next one.

This... was weird...?

Aside from that, the writing felt stiff—composed mostly of explanations and simple statements. It was hard for me to feel immersed, and I had to fight to focus on the plot 😫

(At one point I realized someone had died a scene earlier because people were *talking about it*)

The imagery was interesting, though.

Such a quick, cool read. Danielle Cain is a wanderer, but sets her sights on Freedom, Iowa to get some answers about a friend of hers that killed himself. There she finds a sorta free utopia where the law of the land is a 3 horned deer that slaughters anyone who takes advantage of anyone else.
For this being so short, the world and people in it feel pretty full/real. Already started the next one!
Also, such a pretty cover!

I've never read anything that so aptly describes my feelings. Damn.

This book makes me long for a life I know I will never have…

Short novella that is just the right amount of weird and creepy. 👻

A town of anarchist squatters summon a spirit capable of determining who in the community is good and who is bad. The descriptions in this story are very vivid adding to the gore and creating an intense feeling as the action escalates.

There were some parts that felt rushed, but overall, I really enjoyed this one.

Very creepy and very cool. A #onesitting horror novel about an anarchist investigating her friend's suicide, which leads her to a supernatural mess.

This short story was a trip. Anarchist squatters who have taken over an abandoned town in some post war US, summon a 3 antlered deer spirit protector to solve their problem of some guy gaining to much power, but of course things go awry. The main girl wants answers to her friends sudden suicide and learns more then she probably wanted. There was also Lots of LGBT rep in this book which was very nice.

WHAT EVEN IS THIS BOOK??????

Besides a queer anarchist punk fantasy that feels post-apocalyptic on account of the squatter city it‘s set in. Besides a short, fast ride with an instantly engaging narrative voice. Besides the thing that convinced me I need a hell of a lot more of Margaret Killjoy‘s writing in my life.

I know it ain‘t perfect. I recognized so many pieces of Danielle Cain‘s soul that I don‘t care. 4.5 stars.

An anarchist community of squatters deal with a spirit of justice that preys on predators. Mixed feelings about this one: loved the diverse characters, but the climax was a letdown, the post-climax "Hey, let's make a series of this" felt forced, and the lead character not only didn't do much she didn't have much to do. But it moves along well enough and with a cast genial enough that I'll probably read the next.

I absolutely love the community created in this novella! Such a great cast of beautifully diverse characters, with a demonic predatory deer 🦌 thrown in to keep you from being to comfortable! Can‘t wait to check out the sequel!

A quick read tonight before bed - nice and concise. Short books can sometimes hold profound stories.

I enjoyed this one - although the author's socio-political commentary was a bit heavy-handed for my taste. I found myself disliking the main character at times for her snap judgements and generalizations - and I felt that the "villain" of the book was unjustly accused.

Still... an interesting little read - well-written and thought provoking.

I generally love most of the Tor novellas that I pick up, and this one had a really interesting premise. In the near future, a town of anarchists summons a guardian spirit, which then mysteriously starts to turn on them. Our main character is in town investigating a friend's death and finds herself drawn into the supernatural unexpectedly. It was good but parts felt rushed. #24in48

This horror novella was pretty good. Felt like a decent X-Files monster-of-the-week episode only instead of Mulder you have a queer punk anarchist doing the investigating. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

As first paragraphs go, this is a doozy:

Sometimes you have to pull a knife. It‘s not a good thing. I don‘t enjoy it. But sometimes you just have to get a knife in your hands and make it clear which way the stabby end is pointing.

A novella about a young woman searching for clues about her friend's suicide. Her investigation leads her to Freedom, Iowa, an anarchist squatter town where a supernatural force has taken residence. The politics of anarchism are given a lot of voice here, despite the story's brevity, and the story is entertaining with some sharp writing, characters, and creepiness. I will read the upcoming sequel.

I had been super thrilled to pick this up -- Tor's been excellently marketing all of their novella releases this past good bit, and I want to read them *all* -- but my overwhelming impression of this was lack of personal sympathy to the depiction of anarchry. Definitely would try more works by this author, though.

I knew I was going to love this book and it did not disappoint.

I'll cop to the fact that I am predisposed to like a story about anarchist queer punks fighting demons, but hello? That's awesome. I'm excited that this is the first in a series & can't wait to read more about the characters.

In interest of full disclosure, the author published several short pieces of mine during her editorship of Steampunk Magazine. That said, we've never met.

the 1st in a very ambitious hold spree i went on 2 weeks ago. a wonderfully fast read. i don't know much about anarchy communes or fantasy, and this was a nice, quick foray into both. it's a queer and racially diverse cast, tho that was executed in a way that wasn't particularly organic. i was happy to have it nonetheless. A+++ on the gore and creepy animals scale tho! i'll probably pick this author up again.
