This book features stories of 40 amazing women in history. This is one of the most educational and inspiring books I've read that informs readers of women who changed our world.

This book contains beautiful illustrations accompanied by facts about each woman and their lives. Being broken up into 40 individual one-page biographies this story would easily offer a teacher the opportunity to share one or two stories with their class at a time. These mini biographies could potentially act as introductions for further potential research about the women. Each individually are perfect examples of fast-moving narratives.

Harrison portrays influential women in black history in her B, Amelia Boomer Book list award winning work. Beautiful illustrations accompany facts about these women, which will help to engage young readers. I originally read this book digitally, but loved it so much that I had to order this and one other to add to my classroom library stash- highly recommended for elementary classrooms! This book would do tell in a IR setting.

Betrinag LD @ school provides information on independent reading, and explains structures to support independent reading in students with learning disabilities https://www.ldatschool.ca/independent-reading/ UDL principle 6.2 will aid teachers in helping to support their students‘ planning and strategy development, while EL strategy 42 will help students organize the information gained from reading. #ucflae3414sp21 4y

I first saw this book at Barnes and Nobles and it immediately grabbed my attention! This book could be a bit content heavy for the younger grade levels, but it speaks about very important and influential women of our history and would be a great addition to any classroom library! I know students will be drawn towards the fun illustrations, as well as, the stories of these women! A great book to utilize in a history or social studies lesson.

Emma_Barcena The genre is B. This book is a New York Times Bestseller. This book can be used as a GR. This is a great resource to use for more biographical relevant information.

https://readingagency.org.uk/resources/2622/
(edited) 4y
Emma_Barcena The UDL Principles 9.1 & 8.3 can be used to promote expectations and beliefs for motivation and to foster collaboration and community. The EL Principles 16 & 28 can be used to integrate speaking, listening, and writing activities. Also, provide students with biographies of significant men and women. #UCFLAE3414su20 (edited) 4y
DrSpalding Late 4y
DrSpalding English learner strategy 28 is perfect for biographies. The illustrations are certainly attention grabbing. I like the idea of dipping in and dipping out of this text; using historical figures that align to content you were teaching in social studies. Guided reading is probably not the best strategy for this particular text. They now have a male sequel to this book as well. 4y

JoslynB I saw this book and fell in love with the concept immediately. It is nice to see someone choose it. This book is great to incorporate with a social study lesson. It also helps to introduce important historical figures outside of the typical curriculum that can expand student's knowledge of significant accomplishments. I think your EL principle will work well when discussing it in class. 4y
DrSpalding You need to truly think about ways to incorporate these books beyond independent reading. There are many other teaching strategies that would work better with the quality book selections you have made. See previous comments. 4y

This book would be great for literature circles when students can collaborate with each other.

LauraLeighn Wow this resource is great! It‘s so vibrant and the page itself is so cool. It also includes such useful lessons and things to do 4y
AshleyH UDL- Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. (3.2)
Students will be on the lookout for patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships while reading these biographies.
EL- 10. Teach think, pair, and share strategies in cooperative groups.
In small groups or partners, students will share patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships with their peers.

I found this NF book fascinating and really good for elementary students' research. During black history month (and during the rest of the school year) this book could help students learn important facts about bold women of our culture. This book could be a great RA or to use IR for research purposes. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Zelymarie.R Vashti Harrison made a collection of reading-aloud of her own book (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0PuvFVu-5P0) and this, as well as the book, could be a variety of resources students could use to optimize challenges UDL 8.2. Providing information about significant people from different countries could be useful for ELL, ESOL #28. 5y

This is a beautiful NF book that covers the history of some very impactful women in black history! So important to bring this into your classroom to emphasize diversity and inclusion, while highlighting and naming these women so our students know who they are and what they did! It would be great to be utilized as a RA and read a page each day so the students can fully grasp the biography of each women and understand the impact a person can have.

Brennap I found this amazing resource for this book that has multiple lesson plans that can be used throughout reading the book. I think it would be great to do one lesson each day after reading the book. The lessons discuss each person, while also discussing qualities such as leadership, boldness and more. This book supports the UDL Prinicple (9.1) “Promoting expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation.” 5y
Brennap It also supports the ESOL Strategy 3. Encourage self-talk( positive thinking). Overall this book and these lessons can help create a framework for students to begin creating self esteem and belief in themselves! How amazing! 5y
DrSpalding This is a fabulous series and now that Kyleigh has presented her author study, I think many of you will be encouraged to add her books to your classroom library. This is an amazing resource. Well done. 5y

Biography. The author does a great job in representing woman of color who are lesser known. These everyday woman are exemplified through the biographies to children as both hero‘s and role models. The authors use of animation picture would be relatable to children of younger ages as the text may be a little bit more challenging. The author also uses quotes from these women.

This book has multiple people's biographies in it. I read the one about Harriett Tubman. It is a great example of a biography because it shows why Harriett is such an important person from our history and what happened in the underground railroad. It can help children grasp why the railroad was so important to slaves.

Just realized I forgot to do my #TIL yesterday. Phillis Wheatley was taken from her home in Africa when she was 8 on the slaving ship, the Phillis 😢.

She traveled to England to publish her first book, making her the first African American woman poet to be published. She corresponded with George Washington and Voltaire.

She was freed in 1767 but struggled with poverty for the rest of her life because she couldn‘t find a US publisher.

The entires are inspiring although some are a bit heartbreaking. The illustrations are charming. Also, I liked that the book was arranged chronologically as it helped making connections. The back includes a list of 12 more women she wanted to include.
