They called themselves the lucky ones They were seven children either orphaned or abandoned by their parents and chosen by legendary philanthropist and brain surgeon Dr. Vincent Capello to live in The Dragon, his almost magical beach house on the Oregon Coast. Allison was the youngest of the lucky ones living an idyllic life with her newfound family...until the night she almost died, and was then whisked away from the house and her adopted family forever. Now, thirteen years later, Allison receives a letter from Roland, Dr. Capellos oldest son, warning her that their father is ill and in his final days. Allison determines she must go home again and confront the ghosts of her past. Shes determined to find out what really happened that fateful night -- was it an accident or, as shes always suspected, did one of her beloved family members try to kill her? But digging into the past can reveal horrific truths, and when Allison pieces together the story of her life, shell learns the terrible secret at the heart of the family she once loved but never really knew.

I read the last 40% of THE LUCKY ONES in one sitting, desperate to see where it came out. Allison has major chemistry with her former foster siblings and dad. The banter flies hard and fast, backed up by deep, genuine emotion. I wanted her to get to keep every relationship she rekindled—and, this being a thriller, I knew she couldn‘t. I had to see what was gonna give.

TW for adoptive sibling sex and lots of psychopathy-related atrocities.

Today‘s reading goal: finish THE LUCKY ONES. I‘m loving it, but I‘ve only had weird little scraps of time these last few days so it‘s been easier to pick up comics or poetry.

I‘m over halfway through now and nobody‘s got superpowers—but there IS a certain amount of former adoptive brother banging, despite all other adoptive siblings being treated AS siblings. I almost bailed on THE FLASH for this very thing, but it‘s Reisz so I‘m gonna allow it.

More tea + new book. I‘ve always had the impression this is “Tiffany Reisz does the X-Men,” but I dunno whether that‘s a founded assumption or something I pulled out of the air. Guess I‘m gonna find out! It started really well, though I fear Allison‘s gonna bang her former adoptive brother. I‘d be far happier if all possible superheroes could avoid banging their adoptive siblings, former or not.

Because yeah, that‘s a TROPE. I blame Nightcrawler.

I really wanted to like this book and perhaps I would have if the description didn‘t lead me to believe it would be an intriguing mystery. The story itself was interesting but it lasted far longer than necessary and the sexy times were awkward and frankly not that necessary to the plot line.

This book unexpectedly became one of my favorites today! It started off as just another fun read, but after a few days of reading it here and there, I couldn‘t put it down! So many plot developments, loving and interesting characters, and what seemed to be new and exciting content on every page. I would definitely recommend this to a friend as their next read!

Mehso-so

In the end it was an interesting concept, but I can't completely get past the fact that I just wasn't feeling it for the first 50%. And while I def respect Tiffany Reisz for trying to switch things up, there's a certain level of 🔥 that I've come to expect from her stuff and this one was missing that (though if you don't really read romance you still might go 😳). So basically, cool premise just not executed strongly enough to be a pick for me.

I have really been enjoying Tiffany Reisz‘s non romance novels. They are always intriguing, so I have high hopes for this one.

Well! I made a quick decision to borrow this book on Hoopla. If I had scrolled down to see that the publisher was Harlequin, I may have been less surprised by the turn this just took!! 😂😂

Tiffany Reisz has done it again. The Lucky Ones is dark and twisty, but full of love and family too. It's an emotional rollercoaster of a read. Nothing beats a good Gothic novel, and this one definitely delivers.

Engaging, creepy & slightly twisty romantic suspense novel with a Gothic feel. Set on the Oregon Coast in a house known as 'The Dragon''-Allison is back after years away to see the dying brain surgeon father who adopted her, wondering if someone in her family tried to kill her when she was 12. Great premise & a book-loving MC.📚👍 Paired with Grilled Cheese with Spinach (so good!) & Tomato Soup for my blog book tour review. Review/recipe link👇🏻

Part of my weekend reading for a book tour next week. This one seems pretty creepy & I can never resist an Oregon Coast (spooky beach house) setting. 😱 My reading snack of choice this weekend is Ina Garten's Rosemary Roasted Cashews-which I am finding a bit addicting. (Link to recipe is below). What are you reading and/or snacking on this weekend? 📚😋

RealLifeReading Mmmmmm!!! 6y

Ingerella Oh my..I don't think I could stop myself with those! 6y
batsy Oh yum. And the recipe is so simple! I could eat a whole bowl of that. 6y
Zelma I‘m snacking on peanut m&ms right now. A bit more down market than your snack! 😆 6y
TNbookworm Ooh, those cashews look yummy! 6y
Jayhawk_In_Texas Great book and great snack! I love cashews roasted with rosemary. I also like them roasted with bird‘s eye chili and scallions. A local Thai restaurant serves them and I can never resist taking an order home for later. 6y
Christine I adore these cashews and make them frequently! And multiple friends now make them as well and refer to them as “Christine‘s Cashews” (even though I do repeatedly give Ina full credit 😛)! 6y
DebinHawaii @RealLifeReading @LeahBergen @Ingerella @batsy @TNbookworm @Christine Yes! They are really good--I had to put them away in a cupboard otherwise I would have eaten them all! 😋🤣 6y
DebinHawaii @Jayhawk_In_Texas Those Thai ones sound really good too! 😋👍 6y
DebinHawaii @Zelma But no less delicious & addicting! 🤣🤣🤣 6y

I love Tiffany Reisz—she writes books that are a little taboo or outside of the box. This is a mystery with romantic suspense, and I thought it was a total page-turner. There are some big moral grey areas, but I think this author writes these types of books well. Here, I feel like she investigates the idea of risks vs. benefits and secrets vs. lies. There are lots of surprises dropped, which kept my suspense up. The end was a huge surprise to me.

Gissy Sounds like my cup of tea! 👌🏼 6y

I did manage to make a simple, slightly random pantry soup today for #soupersundays on the blog--Miso Soup with Chickpeas & Pasta (Israeli couscous). It hit the spot-sort of a vegan chicken soup--good for the breathing & the soul. 😋🍲❤️Still looking through my #bookmail & #ARC s for book tour reviews that came in this month. This one sounds intriguing & a little creepy & I like that it's set on the Oregon coast. Link to the soup recipe is below.
