When the Linnet children run away from their strict grandmother, they just so happen to arrive on their Uncle Ambrose‘s doorstep. He “reluctantly” takes them in, and so begin their adventures—including a mysterious reclusive lady of the manor, a village witch and her cronies, some friendly and protective bees, and more than a touch of magic along the way. This was an enchanting classic children‘s book ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …of the “English children having adventures in the countryside” type—one of my favorite genres! The ending resolved everything a little too quickly and neatly (I wanted clearer consequences for the villains!), but otherwise, this was a delight. This was my 1964 pick for #192025. 4mo

My pick for January is the first book I've read by Elizabeth Goudge. This story of four children going to live with their grandmother combined good characterization with English folklore in a satisfying way. I can see why she is so beloved! I hope to track down more of her novels.

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I'm glad you enjoyed it!! It's one I wished I had read as a child, because I think I would have found it even more magical then. 1y

Gah, this book is so freaking adorable! I love everyone in it, even the bad guys. The children are fantastically written and I would marry Uncle Ambrose if I had the chance 😂 There are definitely some predictable aspects of this story, and I wish that Lady Alicia's husband and son had been missing for a more reasonable amount of time (30 years is WAY too long), but on the whole this one is just a delight.

TheAromaofBooks Hoping the rest of my #LMPBC group feels the same way haha @inthegreensandblues this one should be heading to you later this week!! @deblovestoread @maggie4483

My #WeeklyForecast shows a full windowsill as usual 😂 I should finish the tagged book today, my first completed for the #BirthdayPixieReadathon and I am hoping to also squeeze in Murder is Easy, this month's #AgathaChristieClubR2 read. For the #BacklistReadathon I'll be tackling Jill Shalvis - I own the first five books of the Lucky Harbor series, so that seems like a good place to start!!

@Cinfhen @Clwojick @Lizpixie

Cinfhen I love your weekly enthusiasm 😛Starting another series!!! 🙌🏻 2y

Day 4 of crappy weather (freezing rain is the worst!) but this delightful tale was a comfort. Four children move to an English village where white and black magic still abound and they must fight for good against evil. The plot was predictable but that didn't matter because the charm was in the small moments between characters, the pieces of folklore, and descriptions of nature. It felt both old-fashioned and wise. #192025 @Librarybelle

Librarybelle Nice! 2y
batsy I love that old-timey cover! 2y
Centique It‘s a beauty! I feel like I‘ve read Elizabeth Goudge at some time but I can‘t see a title that rings a bell so I must be mistaken. I‘m keen to try this one 😍 2y
merelybookish @Centique I feel the same. She had a lot of books and a devoted following and yet somehow, she's passed me by till now. But her writing is absolutely charming. 2y

Gah, this is freakin‘ charming.

Four children and a dog, left to live with a nasty grandmother, run away and fortuitously end up with their gruff old uncle (and his one-legged gardener/cook) in a magically rambling old house in the country. The cat and her kittens live on the kitchen drain board and a pellet-spitting owl accompanies their uncle everywhere.

Has anyone else read this 1964 book? I know @rubyslippersreads is a fan! 😊
