A wonderful collection of Own Voices short stories each with a vivid array of storytelling and emotion. They capture the experiences of the characters and authors or readers amazingly. Each story lays out the human experience in ways that break your heart and pull you in.
For my June TBR I decided to use a random number generator to select a book from my massive list on GoodReads. So, to the internet I went for a randomizer, entered in 1-2907 (holy crows!) and out came book number 2172: Fresh Ink edited by Lamar Giles. This is a YA anthology from a diverse group of authors and includes a graphic novel, 1 act play, & 10 short stories.

Featuring short stories by Melissa de la Cruz, Malinda Lo, Walter Dean Myers, Daniel José Older, Jason Reynolds, Gene Luen Yang, and Nicola Yoon (some of my favorite YA authors!), Fresh Ink offers protagonists who are diverse in race, gender, sexuality, and class in diverse genres-- ⬇️
pickI really enjoyed this short story collection. It really brought up some important issues that effect a YA audience regarding tolerance and accordance. I thought this was really solid and relevant for the times and would definitely recommend!

pickI love short stories so when I came across this anthology I jumped into it. It is full of wonderful, diverse stories. My favorite was Tags by Walter Dean Myers.

New favorite word: tentaculous. Closely followed by: tentacular. ?? In my head, they are hybrids of tentacle & fabulous and tentacle & spectacular! I know that's not what they really mean, though.
Tentaculous was found in the story "A Stranger in the Bochinche" in the tagged book. Tentacular was found when trying to find a definition of tentaculous online. ??
I‘m halfway through Fresh Ink, and after reading the adorable and oh-so-very-contemporary “When I Learned to Cook” by Sara Farizan, the next short story just took a hard right turn in tone. I‘m starting “A Stranger at the Bochinche” by Daniel José Older, and this opening language is some trippy-ass shit that I‘m digging (see the above text). If this is any indication of what I‘ve been missing, Older is getting added to my TBR ASAP. #anthology
“Tags” by the late Walter Dean Myers, the fifth story in this anthology, is written in the format of a short one-act play (a fun touch of variety for an anthology). The story is powerful and creative. Much like the first story in this anthology, “Tags” is layered with meaning and brilliantly constructed. Been eager to get my hands on this book, even before I found out I‘d be moderating a panel at the James River Writers Conference that will include Lamar. It‘s always nice when my moderator prep collides with my TBR list.

pickThis is gonna be a long one so brave yourselves as I have a monologue replying to myself to give you everything this book has got. WOW. What a voice this anthology has...as a group of different, diverse voices! It's a symphony of solos that touch each other, and it's worth your time...just like the best acapella.
pickA great collection of short stories created in collaboration with We Need Diverse Books-- some adorably fluffy, some very heavy. I think my favorites were "Meet Cute" by Malinda Lo, "Why I Learned to Cook" by Sara Farizan, and "Super Human" by Nicola Yoon.
Reading this now for #keepingitshort. This foreword by Lamar Giles just spoke so many volumes! I am so ready to dive in.
