Photographic: The Life of Graciela Iturbide | Isabel Quintero
24 posts | 17 read | 27 to read
Graciela Iturbide was born in Mexico City in 1942, the oldest of 13 children. When tragedy struck Iturbide as a young mother, she turned to photography for solace and understanding. From then on Iturbide embarked on a photographic journey that has taken her throughout her native Mexico, from the Sonora Desert to Juchitn to Frida Kahlos bathroom, to the United States, India, and beyond. Photographic is a symbolic, poetic, and deeply personal graphic biography of this iconic photographer. Iturbide's journey will excite readers of all ages as well as budding photographers, who will be inspired by her resolve, talent, and curiosity.

#MagicalMay Day 5: #CincoDeMayo reminded me of this graphic biography of Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide. This is a fantastic memoir of a fierce female who defied societal expectations, transmuted her private pain into something that she can manipulate with her hands, and with the aid of shadows and light, and a whole lot of waiting – beauty would emerge, like something birthed out of a camera lens. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-j9A

This is my only planned May #tbr - and most are for various book clubs 😊

I‘ll be reading an annotated copy of Sense & Sensibility to join in with my fellow #pemberlittens (I‘ve had this copy forever and finally getting around to reading, lol)

Two in this stack are possibilities for #litsyatxreaderssociety - this month‘s theme: chosen for the cover

🤞 I‘ll actually get through this whole stack this month 😄

Originally chose something else for my #ownvoices book set in Mexico for #readharder2019 but it turned out to be a bit hard-boiled for me and this seems more my speed

This comic bio is a solid read, and a great introduction to the life and work of Graciela Iturbide. I wasn't overly familiar with her work prior to this, and I feel like I have a great basic knowledge now. The mixture of art from Zeke Pena and Iturbide's own photographs worked incredibly well. Recommended for anyone looking for an intro to Graciela Iturbide.

Velvetfur I've never heard of her, but now I am intrigued.... Thanks for bringing her to my attention, I will Google her and her work! 5y

This beautifully captured graphic novel biography tells the story-in-progress of Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide.

Told in black and white, like the photographs of Iturbide, the story explores the photographers‘s life through her pictures- both copies of the photographs and illustrated recreations.

This is a truly lovely biography, great for teens and adults.

Thanks to #Netgalley for a digital #ARC of this lovely graphic novel.
The life of photographer Graciela Iturbide is told through a combination of her b&w photographs, poetic descriptions by Isabel Quintero, and the crisp b&w illustrations of Zeke Pena.
She defied tradition by attending film school after marrying & having three children in her early 20's, and after losing her daughter, she turns to photography to heal and learn more about herself.

kyraleseberg (Cont'd) She traveled across Mexico, the United States, and later India to capture life and traditions with a special emphasis on women / feminine nature.
I enjoyed learning about this celebrated Mexican photographer who has spent her life capturing honest portraits and authentic moments at home and abroad.

I received this #arc from #NetGalley. Now you all know how much I love a great graphic novel, so I just had to read it.

This is a biography of Graciela Iturbide which was beautifully told in graphic novel form. The gorgeous illustrations drew me in, and the story kept me interested. I loved that this book included a few snip-its of Iturbides work, and the story behind some of her most famous photos. I loved every page.
