AN OBSERVER 'NEW FACE OF FICTION 2018' This is a story of something like survival. Sal planned it for almost a year before they ran. She nicked an Ordnance Survey map from the school library. She bought a compass, a Bear Grylls knife, waterproofs and a first aid kit from Amazon using stolen credit cards. She read the SAS Survival Handbook and watched loads of YouTube videos. And now Sal knows a lot of stuff. Like how to build a shelter and start a fire. How to estimate distances, snare rabbits and shoot an airgun. And how to protect her sister, Peppa. Because Peppa is ten, which is how old Sal was when Robert started on her. Told in Sal's distinctive voice, and filled with the silent, dizzying beauty of rural Scotland, Sal is a disturbing, uplifting story of survival, of the kindness of strangers, and the irrepressible power of sisterly love; a love that can lead us to do extraordinary and unimaginable things.

Mehso-so

There‘s a surprising calm that comes from reading this book. It comes in between the rushes to survive. It‘s among the hope that there are still good people out there. The calm comes from Sal having faced it all, knowing she can make it through anything - and from Peppa laughing along the entire way. You can have that seriousness of survival alongside the levity of being along for the ride, laughing - both allowing for and feeding the other.

Mehso-so

A mixed bag of a book. A good basic plot of 13-year-old Sal escaping her alcoholic mother and abusive stepfather by running away to live in the Scottish woodlands. Sal is an engaging voice, but the first half of the book sees her going into some depth about her survival skills, and later we get the full backstory of a woman they meet; both break the flow of the narrative, and the latter adds nothing - both feel like padding.

A wonderful, poignant read. Sal is an awesome young woman. There are a couple of unrealistic bits , but the story and characters are strong enough to ignore them. A heart felt read based on some tough themes.

Cathythoughts Sounds really good 👍🏻♥️ 6y

I managed to finish this wonderful book just in time before 2018 ended. This is the story of Sal and Peppa who flee to the Scottish woods in order to hide from their old life with their mum‘s molester boyfriend (including a serious crime). ‘Sal‘ is a highly atmospheric tale of growing up, of standing up for yourself and of the powerful magic and beauty of nature. I loved it! Longer review to follow on my blog tomorrow (2nd Jan)!!!

Hubby had some books on hold at the library so I went with him and these three just leaped into my arms, begging to be checked out. What else could I do? I'm going to save the bottom 2 for January though. They fit some reading goals I'm setting for myself. #librarylove #sorrynotsorry

I wish this book were being released now so that I could immediately recommend it to everyone. It‘s out May 8th, so put in on a library hold!! The story of Sal and her younger sister Peppa has all the feels. There is so much love, tenacity, grit, danger, trust, fear, hate and forgiveness wrapped up in a book-sized package. The characters are incredibly well-developed and the story itself is cleverly plotted. Highly recommend.

Well, I was able to stay off #netgalley for about 10 minutes. I can‘t help myself with that site!!!!

Ok, just these, and NO MORE for a while. I have a TBR to read down. REALLY.

Plus, I‘d love to see my pending request list shrink. Right now it is FULL of Viking and Knopf books that I will never get, but which they take forever to archive.

Tera66 I tell myself everytime, read the books you have already. But I always find myself searching on Net Galley. 7y
Chelleo I just signed up and got my first ARC. This is going to wreak havoc on my TBR list! 7y

It‘s getting light outside, which means it‘s just about time for me to go to bed. And I‘m taking SAL with me. Delighted to see a blurb from Sarah Schmidt on the front! ♥️

RadicalReader @Liberty I know that feeling all too well when you get sucked into a book then look outside to notice it is day light out like what the heck read all night long?! 7y
