This book is amazing! It was quite a serendipitous find for me. In reading “When Books Go To War,” I learned this was one of the most popular Armed Service Edition books ever published, so I decided to give it a go and I‘m glad I did. What a gem. Set at the turn of the 20th century, it tells the coming-of-age story of Francie Nolan. Charming & honest.

I first picked up this book as a girl. The pages were yellowed with the patina of age, the cover hanging on by some miracle. Between the horror paperbacks on someone's shelf, Ms. Smith's masterpiece beckoned to me. Perhaps I could see myself in this coming of age tale of young Miss Francie Nolan. Ms. Smith begins with beautiful allegory that grabs by the heart strings. The only book I will make time to reread with so many books, so little time.

Nute Welcome to Litsy! It‘s a warm and friendly community. I know that you will enjoy yourself here. I‘m looking forward to getting to know you!🙂 This is a favorite book of mine as well! 2mo

Question: This book is #13 on the 100 Most Loved Books (Great American Read). What about it do you think appeals to American readers?

Background: It‘s my book club pick in Australia and the group often asks me questions that make me speak for all Americans. The life of an expat! So I‘m doing some research.

My new favorite book! What a lovely, beautifully written story. This coming of age tale transcends time. Francie Noland is one of the most charming, relateable, complex characters I have read, and is a kindred spirit. I could gush and gush about this book and wish I had read it before now.

This book kept coming up on a podcast that I listen to called “What should I read Next”. I am very glad to now say that I have read it and loved it. I loved reading from Francie‘s point of view and was rooting for her and her family throughout the book. I loved how reading was talked about so powerfully and as something that can save you from your circumstances.

Freespirit I have just read this and loved it. 3mo
webhau1 @Freespirit me too. It reminded me of other books I read told from the child‘s perspective such as The Glass Castle or The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio and also one of my favs Burnt Toast Makes you Sing Good (actually this book (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is significant to the author in that memoir) 3mo

Haven't posted in a couple days so I thought I'd give some thoughts on my current read. This book is heavy and beautiful and thought provoking. It's unlike anything else I've read. It's a portrait of a family, the plot feels almost nonexistent because it winds from instant to instant in ways that sometimes feel connected and sometimes don't. I feel very connected with the protagonist. It's taking me much longer to read than expected.

A truly eye-opening, thought-provoking, heartwarming read. This story, while often light-hearted, tackles some difficult topics from the unique perspective of a child, and leads readers on a coming of age journey with the main character, Francie, and the challenges she faces growing up in Brooklyn.

There is so much to learn from this book. It will make you think, smile, and cry and will stay with you long after it‘s finished!
