Not all secrets are meant to be found. If Indiana Jones lived in the X-Files era, he might bear at least a passing resemblance to Nolan Moore -- a rogue archaeologist hosting a documentary series derisively dismissed by the "real" experts, but beloved of conspiracy theorists. Nolan sets out to retrace the steps of an explorer from 1909 who claimed to have discovered a mysterious cavern high up in the ancient rock of the Grand Canyon. And, for once, he may have actually found what he seeks. Then the trip takes a nasty turn, and the cave begins turning against them in mysterious ways. Nolan's story becomes one of survival against seemingly impossible odds. The only way out is to answer a series of intriguing questions: What is this strange cave? How has it remained hidden for so long? And what secret does it conceal that made its last visitors attempt to seal it forever?

This could have been a 5 star book but at times the main character got a little too preachy for me. Not so much about religion but about his hunt for the unexplained.

This was an exciting read. It hooked me from the beginning. The search for a mysterious cavern in the Grand Canyon. What they find was a complete surprise. Not at all what I thought it might be. There were a couple of twists I wasn‘t expecting. This was very enjoyable.

FlowerFairy Have had this on my TBR for ages. Need to get to it soon. 5y

IF INDIANA JONES LIVED IN THE X-FILES ERA, HE MIGHT BEAR A STRONG RESEMBLANCE TO NOLAN MOORE — A ROGUE ARCHAEOLOGIST HOSTING A YOUTUBE DOCUMENTARY SERIES DERISIVELY DISMISSED BY THE "REAL" EXPERTS, BUT BELOVED OF CONSPIRACY THEORISTS

BookBumming The Possession synopsis; Still recovering from the shocking revelations they uncovered deep in uncharted territory in the Grand Canyon, American myth and legend investigator Nolan Moore and his team take on a new mission, investigating a rumored case of witchcraft and possession. 🔮👻
5y
BookBumming Nolan hopes their new case, in a quaint village in the middle of the woods, will prove much more like those he and his team investigated prior to their trip to Kincaid's cavern. (Without merit)

But as the residents accounts of strange phenomena add up, Nolan and company begin to suspect something all too real and dangerous may be at play. A force that may not be willing to let them escape the village unscathed.”

Read this in one day! Rutger is a new-to-me author and I really enjoyed his style. Great pacing, an enjoyable main character, strong setting. I was surprised by a few twists. I didn‘t love the resolution, but the rest of the book was a lot of fun.

Lord In Heaven above was this a slog. It did not keep you guessing, or really all that engaged. At times it was so meandering that I got lost. The big “reveal” felt half explained and partially thought out. Could‘ve had promise but fell flat.

This was a lot of fun! Plenty of horror to go around (plus the whole claustrophobic trapped in a cave thing), but my favorite thing is the main character, Dolan. He and his producer, Ken, are wonderfully snarky and sarcastic, so there is a lot of humor to leaven the episodes of terror. Highly recommended for fans of horror and snark!

Erofan Sounds interesting! 6y

Interesting story that pulled me through very quickly. It‘s active and engaging and felt like these people are the one‘s that Sam and Dean Winchester cross paths with after this book ends. My only criticism is the obscene language that I don‘t feel lends anything positive to the book. Needless profanity takes it off for anyone under 18 and about half of my bookish friends which is too bad ;The story is a great original myth grown from real seeds.

This is a great read, with some nice pop culture references and it feels like a mix of X-Files, Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider....it‘s truly gripping with some great humour, tension, excitement and some surprises along the dark and scary way. I loved this and can thoroughly recommend it.

For this year my goal is finish a book each month, and hopefully that number will grow as the year progresses! I am determined to not let my depression get in the way of my love of books.

THE X FILES meets THE DESCENT in this entertaining horror thriller by Michael Rutger (aka award-winning speculative writer Michael Marshall Smith) and while I was left with questions about the plot, the story is riddled with a wry, dry humour and throws a knowing wink at conspiracy subculture that dominates certain aspects of the internet, which kept me engaged from beginning to end.

imyril Oooh. I‘ve enjoyed his work as Michael Marshall (Smith). I should give this a look! 6y

I thoroughly enjoyed this book so I did. Team of intrepid ‘mystery hunters‘ attempt to rediscover a historic cave of doom in the Grand Canyon for their cable TV series called ‘The Anomaly Files‘. What will they find? Hidden treasure, evidence of lost civilisations, the ark of the covenant, monsters?!?!? It‘s monsters....or is it...

One of the weirdest books I‘ve read but I couldn‘t put it down! The author does such an excellent job of describing how terrifying it would be to be stuck underground in the dark that I couldn‘t turn my lamp off after I‘d finished reading at night.

This book was really good. It was different from a lot of books I‘ve read. I‘ve been wanting to read a book like Indiana Jones and this definitely fit the bill. I wouldn‘t read if you are claustrophobic. Some scenes would be terrifying. I don‘t have that issue, though it doesn‘t sound pleasant but it bothered me. This book makes you think, “what would I do in this situation?”

Read this for #Booked2018 - Set outside/about the environment

Cinfhen Cool choice!!! I‘ve been curious about this book... 6y

Michael Rutger did an amazing job creating well-developed characters & a creepy atmosphere. The book plays out like a movie.

Nolan Moore, a rogue “archaeologist”, goes in search of a mysterious cave that a 1909 explorer found & no one has seen it since. Retracing the explorer‘s steps & using some of his own theories, Nolan & his team go out in search for the cave. The cave holds some nasty secrets & they are in for a surprise.

Continuing to read through my #BOTM backlog. This one has some good reviews but I have a new rule-read to your age in pages and if you don‘t like it, bail. So I read to a number of pages that will not be named 😜 and I hated every character. Bail. You may love it.
