Just as charming as I hoped it would be. Definitely tugged on the heartstrings a few times. Was pleasantly surprised to see the story morph from unconventional zombie tale to Demeter and Persephone vibes.

As I mentioned in another post, my 10 year old LOVED this book and insisted that I read it. I'm glad I did, not only do I get to share this with my daughter but it was such a lovely read. I read picture books all the time with my 6 year old, but I realized I need to read children's chapter books now and then. It makes me feel like a kid again, and they're rather magical.

3.5 š Bob was a really sweet story that was really hard to get into. Bob has been hiding in the closet of a house in Australia for 5 years. Livy is a US girl who is visiting her grandmother in Australia. The last time she was there was five years ago. The ending is what makes this book so sweet. It about finding where you belong, and holding on to those you deem important.

Peddler410 Oh my gosh! I don‘t think I can adequately put into words why I read middle grade. I think the authors do a great job identifying the world of the intended audience. Experiencing new mg with my own middle grader has reinforced the impact these books/authors have on helping kids navigate their world. 5y

mrp27 Good question and I don't know for sure. I've been a life long reader so it's not liked I missed out on mg reads, I read plenty when I was that age. But I do feel mg author's today write with more variety and a wider scope than they once did. I can now actually see myself represented in mg books where as before I couldn't. I don't think I'll ever stop reading mg books! 5y

LibrarianRyan I love MG for the way it effects its readers. It's easy to find adult books that effect adults. But to speak to that age, in a way they will always remember. Plus I like that even the scary stories, the sad stories, etc, are still hopeful, still full of the joy of life, and not just the jade of adulthood. 5y

I love the representation of so many different kids and places. It's so important for kids reading, to know that they are represented, seen, heard, etc. in our world. They can also find comfort in knowing they aren't alone. I read from a variety of genres because I love ALL good books. I also like to ā¬‡ļø¸ 5y

I like to chat with people about good books! The librarian at my kids school has ordered books for the library based on my recommendations. 5y

LibrarianRyan I never had one that I know of. I had imaginary monsters. Does that count. At one point in time some family members thought I could see ghosts. Does that count? Mostly it was an over active imagination. But to this day, I swear my uncle Jean was sitting at the foot of my bed telling me everything was going to be okay when I was staying with my grandmother. 5y

They do not look human or animal, therefore they are to be fear and eradicated. If the family is as old as it seems, they would have seen this through several human generations of destruction. LibrarianRyan hummmmm. It's hard to say. The drought is because he is missing. However they have tunnels all over the world and can pop up every where. How is it only Australia is in drought. Is it because that is where he went missing. And if that was the case, wouldn't Bob's mom know to go look at the dry spot? I like how it plays in the story but I don't think it's an ecological message or else the entire planet would be in a drought. 5y

mrp27 I'm not entirely sure and I wish this was explored more. It could just be her insecurity about a new baby in the family. I thought it was going to connect to the well and perhaps a traumatic experience with it. 5y

Chelsibno I wonder if it has something to do with spending such a long time with her grandma as a young girl and not being able to remember any part of it. I remember as a child being very cautious or frightened by things that I couldn‘t remember happening before at an earlier age, like shots or flying on an airplane. 5y

both your comments make sense, but could it be just her personality? I was never one to leave early, but I had a neighbor growing up who never made it full night at a sleep over. Livy seems pretty curious. being left with a grandma she only remembers by voice could be scary, or she could be feeling left out because once again the baby gets to go and do things she does not (stay with mom and go see new places). 5y

My oldest daughter is like this. She has a thing about sleeping in HER bed, at HER house, with HER family. Even family vacations are rough for her. @LibrarianRyan @Chelsibno 5y

Do people still do sleepovers by the way? Maybe with family? Sleepovers are a thing of the past where I live. None of my kids' friends do them. I always had sleepovers as a kid. 5y

mrp27 @JaclynW Same. We do lots of sleepovers with family and my niece will sleep over at her friends house on occasion but for the most part they don't seem to happen as frequently as they did when I was growing up. I used to love them too. 5y

LibrarianRyan It kind of was explored. I think she doesn't remember because it's part of Bob's magic. Remember he gave her the chess piece and told her she had to hold on to it. He didn't remember that she wouldn't remember, just knew she had to hold it. But at the end, he sneaks away again to deliver the chess piece because now that he has his memories back, he knows she will forget without it. A little piece of magic.

Chelsibno I‘ve read several books that are told from two or more perspectives and have enjoyed them. When you have more than one main character, it can be beneficial. I especially like the ones that have two different authors write the different perspectives. I think the differing writing styles can show the character differences more acutely. 5y

They are all middle grade size. But, hummmmmm. No you have me thinking. I could possiably make them a sleeve they would just have the seems in different places. And possibly the opening on the long side. Hummm. I‘ll have to play. 6y

Bob was this month's #mgbuddyread selection. It was just okay for me, as an adult. This would be a cute story for a 6 to 8 year old. I would categorize it as an #earlygrade rather than a #middlegrade novel.

Fantasy light. It takes place in Australia. There is some light magic. Characters are flat and story a little meh. Not bad, just meh.

I went to Barnes & Noble (again!) today and took advantage of their 50% off sale. The bottom 4 were part of the sale, The Light of Paris was on clearance, and The Dire King completes my Jackaby collection. Maybe I'll finally read the series.

Does anyone else buy books in a series without reading the first one to make sure they like it?

ravenlee It depends on the series. If I‘m confident I‘ll like it and it seems binge-worthy I buy it all, or at least the first three or so. Others I dip my toe first. 6y

This is a great read about friendship and imagination. I love that you get the perspective of both Livy and Bob. I read it in hopes to read it to 1st graders, and will definatly read it to them this school year.

Let me just start by saying that Rebecca Stead‘s book When You Reach Me is one of my all-time favorites. I enjoyed her other 2 books as well. So I went into this one with high expectations... and was totally unimpressed. I just didn‘t care about it. The character Bob was pretty cute, but the overall premise didn‘t grab me. Oh well. š¤·ā€¨ā™€ļø¸

Thank you School Library Journal for this ARC in exchange for my honest review... I LOVED this book! I want it to become a classic everyone reads. There is so much magic in all of us, whether human, animal or non-zombie, and "BOB" is a great reminder of that. My ARC did not have any illustrations, though it hints the final edition will. I hope the art will accurately depict the fantasy meets plausible, everyday life is an equally magical way.
