Nonfiction Reading Power
Nonfiction Reading Power: Teaching Students how to Think While They Read All Kinds of Information | Adrienne Gear
10 posts
How can you help students find meaning in informational texts and become independent strategic readers and thinkers? Nonfiction Reading Power gives teachers a wealth of effective strategies for helping students think while they read material in all subject areas. Using the best children's books to motivate students, Adrienne Gear shows teachers how help students zoom-in, question and infer; find the main idea, make connections, and transform what's on the printed page. Key introductory concept lessons for each of the five reading powers provide valuable insight into the purpose of each strategy. The book also explores the particular features of nonfiction and offers lists of key books organized around strategies and subject areas.

Planning a nonfiction heavy reading list for #nonfictionnovember so I can get this pie chart back to evenly balanced 😆
📚 Any recommendations? (Bonus points for great nonfiction audiobooks)

vlwelser This was very entertaining. She's mega funny. Audiobook all the way for this. 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures A great, interesting audio with clips of voicemails from the subject, one I rarely see mentioned 2y

Eyelit @ChaoticMissAdventures ooh - yes I‘ve heard of this one and meant to add it to my list a while ago but then forgot… thanks for this reminder! 2y
Eyelit @vlwelser awesome! Love Carol and didn‘t know there was a memoir available on audio 🥰 2y
Eyelit @DHill thanks - this one is new to me and sounds really interesting! Hopefully my library has it 🤞 2y
zezeki Do I need to sign up somewhere for #nonfictionnovember or I can just use the hashtag? 2y
Eyelit @zezeki no signup that I‘m aware of 🙂 I‘m just using the hashtag 2y
zezeki @Eyelit Okay, thanks for the info! 2y
AnnR I'll second The Boys in the Boat. Don't be put off by the book's blurb and the subject matter if you aren't into sporting events. It is a really a character driven book and incredibly well written. 2y
AnnR @zezeki I'm just using the hashtag too.
There are two YouTubers hosting #NonfictionNovember events on Goodreads and elsewhere, but it doesn't appear either of them are on Litsy.

Planning out my reading challenges for 2022. Not sure what it says that I can find potential picks for every square for the #nonfiction2022 bingo card already sitting on my shelves. I guess this is a good argument for me to #readmyowndamnshelves.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think that‘s a great plan, you can fill them in so many ways, why not let them motivate you to read some of your already owed books. 3y
Amandajoy Yep, @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think that‘s going to be my goal with the challenges I do in 2022. Obviously I have a lot of unread books on my shelf 😂 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Amandajoy I wish you very good luck there. I always start out with good intentions on that front and then go astray. 😂 3y

Hello, nonfiction friends! I‘m tagging some of my nonfiction TBR picks below.

See All 19 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I haven‘t read any of these either, so any would work for me! 4y
daniwithtea Ohhh these are all good choices! I‘m leaning toward Rockefeller Suit, Labyrinth, or Mauve, because I feel like they‘re a nice contrast to some of our others, but I am open to any of them!! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage My picks are Mauve (don‘t we have a tradition of language-related books?) or Catfish. Or Rockefeller. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I was thinking that about Mauve too...our tradition of a word related book. So I‘ll just say Mauve and make that one unanimous. 4y
daniwithtea I am so excited for all of our picks! Are we going to stick with the same send order as last time (I think I was sending to @Riveted_Reader_Melissa so maybe we went alphabetically?), and has anyone‘s address changed? @BarbaraTheBibliophage @tjwill 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @daniwithtea That works for me. And yes, I think we did, @BarbaraTheBibliophage to @daniwithtea to @Riveted_Reader_Melissa to @tjwill does that sound right to everyone? Next question is, has anyone moved or changed physical or email addresses? I have our original list, so if the emails are the same and anyone needs an address, I can send it to them. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @daniwithtea Oh, and my physical address abs email address are the same. 4y
tjwill @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @daniwithtea @BarbaraTheBibliophage My address and email are the same. I‘m excited! When does everyone want to start? Read our own books in May or June before sending? (edited) 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Same addresses for me also. I‘m excited, friends!! 4y
daniwithtea Same address for me as well! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @tjwill I think we are planning on reading in May and mailing on in June...but I‘ll admit, I‘m going to be right at the last minute. 4y

Just signed up for #nfnov - a #nonfictionnovember challenge hosted by @rsteve388 and @Clwojick - see Cassandra‘s page for the sign-up link.

Hoping to get through one or more of these! (So will probably read something totally different 😁)

Soubhiville “So I will probably read something different 🤣”. I hope you choose something you really enjoy. 5y
rockpools @Soubhiville That‘s pretty much how it works 🤷🏻‍♀️😂😂 Thank you! 😘 5y
Chrissyreadit I love it! Can‘t wait to see your choice! 5y

Clwojick SOooo relatable. I never stick to a set schedule or stack. 5y
squirrelbrain I also have H is for Hawk and going to sign up for #nfnov, if you fancy a buddy read.... 5y
rockpools @squirrelbrain I would love to! But in all honesty I‘m a calamitous buddy-reader (and bookclub reader and challenge reader) at the moment - I‘m just not getting through things in the right order 😕, then it gets stressful and I read even less, and it gets more stressful 🙄🙄🙄. Sorry! Hopefully I‘ll get on top of things for new year and be up for All The Things all over again! Thanks for the suggestion though 😘😘😘 5y
squirrelbrain Don‘t worry @RachelO - I don‘t want to be the cause of any more stress! 😬 Anyway, I‘m rubbish at #buddyreads too - I speedread and then I‘ve forgotten it all when it‘s time to discuss! 😁 5y
ljuliel I was just reading through some of the posts for the nonfiction month coming up, and was glad to see I‘m not alone when it comes to buddy reads, read alongs readathons , challenges, etc. It‘s weird, but they actually cause me to read less. I think it‘s because I have a hard time putting my reading on a timetable. It stresses me out to stay on task. I‘m not sure why. 🧐 5y
rockpools @ljuliel Exactly that! That rebellious streak! As soon as I *have* to do anything, it becomes less appealing, much more difficult and ooh look at all the other things. Ridiculous, but 🤷🏻‍♀️. Hope you‘ve found some good ideas for #nfnov 5y
ljuliel Thanks. It‘s funny 😂 but I haven‘t even looked up an actual list of books yet. I can‘t even do that ahead of time. I read a lot of NF anyhow so it‘ll be easy to choose but it also bugs me to have a particular stack staring me in the face. Weird I know ....... Good luck to you too. 👍🏼 5y
rockpools @ljuliel Sooooo familiar 😂🤣😂 5y

Day 12 of the 30 Days of Gratitude photo challenge: wisdom. I do not consider myself a wise person, but a couple of years ago I decided to increase my general knowledge by resolving to read one nonfiction book a month. I have stuck to it and have really learned a lot. Here are a few that I have read and learned from this year. #gratitude30

Here‘s how my #Nonfiction2018 is going so far. April was a slow month, I wasn‘t in the mood for anything too heavy or serious...luckily there is great lighter nonfiction too! How‘s everyone else doing?

DivineDiana You‘re doing great! I need to take a look at my reads. 🙂 7y
Gezemice That‘s awesome! I think I have like 12 nonfictions so far, so I am good for the challenge 7y
Bookzombie I think I‘m at 6 so far. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice You‘ve definitely been reading a lot of great nonfictions this year so far. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Bookzombie That‘s right were I am! 7y
