Her perfectly pitched tween voice will resonate with fans of Kate DiCamillos Raymie Nightingale. Twelve-year-old Charlotte Lockard and eleven-year-old Ben Boxer are separated by more than a thousand miles. Charlotte wants to be a geologist and keeps a rock collection in her room. Ben is obsessed with Harry Potter, presidential history, and recycling. But the two have more in common than they think. Theyre both highly gifted. Theyre both experiencing family turmoil. And they both sit alone at lunch. Over the course of a week, Charlotte and Benonline friends connected only by a Scrabble gamewill intersect in unexpected ways, as they struggle to navigate the turmoil of middle school. This engaging story about growing up and finding your place in the world by the Newbery Medalwinning author of Hello, Universe and the winner of the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature will appeal to fans of Rebecca Stead and Rita Williams-Garcia.

Tweens Charlotte Lockard and Ben Boxer play Scrabble with each other online. They are both word wizards and both are navigating the jungle of middle school in different cities, 1000+ miles apart. Slowly they begin to realize how much more they have in common, mostly that each needs a solid friend 🩵

I loved this book! It really shows how two far-away people can connect and become friends, through today's technology. I would recommend to anybody who loves making good friends!

Read this as a family. The story is about two tweens that play online scrabble together. They both are having family and friend problems. There is nothing compelling about the plot, characters, or writing. It's boring at times and annoying at times. My boys didn't enjoy it either.

I love quirky characters but these two were overly precocious. As far as a resolution, there was none. It was slightly torturous. I listened to this on audio and the narrator made all of the middle school girls except the main character sound like valley girls....does anyone even remember those?

Sweet middle grade book that had a lot of fun Scrabble references, definitions, and internet "rabbit holes", but the relationship between the two characters played far less a role than I anticipated they would. One thing this book does nail is the anxiety over navigating changes in friendships.

What a great book for middle grade readers! The story is great and I loved how Lottie goes “through the rabbit hole” when she is researching topics. Some very deep topics like bullying, fitting in, divorce, etc. Four 🌟. Only because I feel as if the story ended very quickly and I wanted to know more!

The temperatures are dropping, so M and I are both curled up reading on her new daybed, since her bedroom is one of the warmest rooms in the house. ☺️

She has homework to do, but neither of us feels like going downstairs to get it. 😂😂

TEArificbooks I took my kids to indoor playground because I don't want to do homework 5y
alisiakae @mdm139 Wednesday is a 1/2 day of school, so she‘ll have plenty of time to do her homework this afternoon! Esp since we have to be out of the house for a new roof installation, and plan on spending a few hours at the library. 😃 5y

M is home with a cold, this is her reading stack for the day.

I am trying not to stress...of all weeks, today I get tons of homework for my class. We have to be out of the house all day Wed for a new roof installation (Hurricane/hail damage)...Wed also happens to be a 1/2 day of school.

My sis exp. a traumatic event Sat.😢

Part of our neighbor‘s tree fell on our freshly repaired fence last night.

This is not the Chanukah I was expecting. 😩

alisiakae @BookInMyHands @CouronneDhiver @Leftcoastzen Thank you for your support! I just needed to vent. 😃 I actually already keep a gratitude journal through the Gratitude Garden app where I write down 3 good things that happen each day. ☺️ I know how to handle things, just super frustrated (and devastated for my sis) and can‘t really share elsewhere right now! 5y

You Go First is my first completed book for #24in48 and it was enjoyable. I liked the characters, but wish there had been more of a connected storyline rather than two parallel stories that only intersect once in awhile.

Middle School is tough—some might say it sucks—and Charlotte & Ben, friends via an online Scrabble game, have to navigate this world while also dealing with family drama. The connection between Ben & Charlotte is not as well done as it could have been, but their struggles with family, friendship, bullying, & being a little different as well as, finally, their successes are handled well & ultimately make this a satisfying MG read. Recommended.

Another MG book to preview, this one by Newbery Medal winner Erin Entrada Kelly. Two middle school students—Charlotte and Ben—who live 1,000 miles apart connect via an online Scrabble game. As they navigate various middle school challenges as well as family drama, they form an unlikely friendship. Sounds good, right? Definitely enjoying what I‘ve read so far.

The author did a great job of addressing several of the issues middle school children deal with in a believable manner. Ben (11) and Charlotte (12) live in separate states and have never met. They both are very intelligent and met online and play Scrabble together. Neither has a friend to turn to when they have problems. The book covers one week in the life of these two as they tackle the challenges of being a teenager.
