Edna St. Vincent Millay: Selected Poems
Edna St. Vincent Millay: Selected Poems | Edna St. Vincent Millay
15 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Praised by poets and critics ranging from A. E. Housman and Thomas Hardy to Edmund Wilson, Edna St. Vincent Millay's bold, exquisite poems take their place among the enduring verse of the twentieth century. Claiming a lyric tradition stretching back to Sappho and Catullus and making it very much her own, Millay won over her contemporariesand readers ever sincewith her passion, erotic candor, formal elegance, and often mischievous wit. J. D. McClatchy's introduction and selections offer new and surprising insights into Millay's achievement. Included are her most beloved and justly admired poems, such as the wry bohemian anthem "Recuerdo" and the sonnet sequence Fatal Interview, the poetic record of a love affair that is presented in its entirety. McClatchy has also chosen works that extend our sense of Millay's range: translations, her play Aria da Capo, and excerpts from her libretto The King's Henchman. "I have for the most part been guided by my taste for Millay at her tautest and truest," writes McClatchy. "There are precise and resonant images everywhere."

Pickpick

These verses are deceptively simple. You can read and parse them fairly quickly, but they settle in you and many lines will reverberate in your head and unfold more deeply over time. #AwesomeApril #Roll100 @Andrew65 @PuddleJumper

For next month‘s #Roll100 I‘ll definitely be reading Millay since it‘s poetry month. 33 was The Age of Innocence which I just finished with #WhartonBuddyRead and I haven‘t been substituting new titles for ones I‘ve finished on the list so I‘ll try to read 34 instead, but I‘ll wait and see if I have time for either Brody or Heidegger. @PuddleJumper

National Poetry Month: Day 28! 📖❤

I think this is the first Millay poem I've highlighted this month! I really love her poems, and she led such an interesting life! If you ever get the chance to read her biography, you should do so because it's utterly fascinating!

#NationalPoetryMonth

KCofKaysville @Branwen I've picked up a book of her selected poetry, but have not read them yet. 2y

This sonnet is from Wine from These Grapes, published in 1934. I have this book and it‘s the oldest in my collection. The mystery is I have no idea how I came to own this poetry book, but I‘ve moved it to at least three houses. #poem #bloomingbibliophiles

This seems like an appropriate farewell poem choice after experiencing a break up last night. Loooking forward to discovering new poetry with this month‘s prompts😊. #poetrymatters

TheSpineView Sorry to hear. The poem is most appropriate! 5y
jb72 I‘m sorry to hear about the break up. Good poem choice. Let me know if you need anything. 5y
Erin7 @jb72 Thanks, JB. It was my choice. He and I just didn‘t end up being a good fit. 5y
jb72 @Erin7 Those things happen. And at least you could see it. Many go on for years denying or justifying relationships. 5y

#QuotsyJune18 Day 21: It is #Summer the whole year round in Singapore, where my family and I lived for the past ten years now. I am a tropical girl through and through (born and raised in the Philippines). This photo was taken on top of the NTU Art Design and Media, one of our famous heart-shaped buildings. And yes, I live and breathe green the whole year round.

Bklover Beautiful! 6y
BiblioLitten Lucky that you get to live and breathe green.💚💚 6y
