The Fairy Godmother
The Fairy Godmother | Mercedes Lackey
"Shell keep you up long past your bedtime." #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King "The prolific Lackey (the Valdemar series) draws on the darker, Brothers Grimm side of fairy lore for her enchanting tale" Publishers Weekly In the land of the Five Hundred Kingdoms, if you can't carry out your legendary role, life is no fairy tale. Elena Klovis was supposed to be her kingdom's Cinderellauntil fate left her with a completely inappropriate prince! So she set out to make a new life for herself. But breaking with "The Tradition" was no easy matteruntil she got a little help from her own fairy godmother. Who promptly offered Elena a most unexpected job. Now, instead of sleeping in the chimney, she has to deal with arrogant, stuffedshirt princes who keep trying to rise above their place in the tale. And there's one in particular who needs to be dealt with. Sometimes a fairy godmother's work is never done. Book 1 of Five Hundred Kingdoms. Previously published.

Continuing my indulgence rereads. I read this book EVERY YEAR. Easily my favorite magic system and I know the beats of this book forward and backwards. Still not tired of it. Reading this book is akin to a long, hot bath and slipping on a well worn tee after. Relaxing and comfortable

Mehso-so

The book had a strong start, the main characters are fun and engaging. But just 2 chapters from the finish, I lost interest. I cared about the main character, but I found that I didn‘t care much about how magic was shaped going forward.

Tons of stress have me going to my favorite relaxing reads - fairy tale retellings. This cover is AWFUL, but the story is excellent. I love the idea that stories, songs, even poems and rhymes can shape a world, and the Fairy Godmothers are trying to make sure all takes in their kingdoms have happy endings. Great story, fun world, and great characters. Read if you want something happy with great world building

MemoirsForMe Your sweet dog looks so relaxed. We need to follow his lead. 😉 4y

I‘m working from my aunt/godmother‘s house today in Michigan before we visit my cousin who‘s off at college. She delivered this freshly baked cookie to me and now working remotely at my own home has been ruined for me.

This was a great book. Fun, witty, and a different look at fairy godmothers. I love fairy tale retellings, but this was something new. If you ever wondered who was behind the fairy godmother and how she got her job, this book will answer the question. Thank you Mercedes Lackey for making such fun and romantic adventures.

2. Spaghetti
3. The Good Place
4. Snag a screenshot if you see it on your feed like I did ;). Love questionnaires, can never remember to check who did them already.

All right folks, I need #recommendations. I've been underwhelmed by a lot of the stuff I've read or started lately and think I just need something light, fun, whatever time get me out of this funk. I have a nonfiction and audio going that are decent but I'd like a text fiction pick to unwind with after kids go to bed. #Romance, juvenile or #ya, lighter #Fantasy -- give me your recs! It's too soon to reread the tagged book already, usually my cure.

shelbyy I am reading I Capture the Castle right now and it‘s juvenile fiction, but it‘s light and fun! I am really enjoying it and would recommend it. It starts off a little slow for the first few chapters but then gets really fun 7y
jwashreads Have you ever read Darynda Jones? She has the Charley Davidson series and they crack me up. They're light, they're funny, there's romance, and the main character is a grim reaper. It's fantastic! 7y
8leagueboot I really enjoyed Karuna Riazi's middle-grade fantasy adventure "The Gauntlet". It has a very Jumanji feel, but with more whimsy! 7y
Kaylamburson For light and fun contemporary chick-lit, I loved The Hating Game. Takes place in the publishing world and two executive assistants fighting it out to reach the next level. 7y

#12daysofchristmas day 3 - french hen. Ok this one was hard for me. Don't ask me why but my brain kept going hen -> little red hen -> fables/folk/fairy tales -> fairy godmother. So I'm picking Elena from this book.

As I keep saying, Mercedes Lackey is a guilty pleasure of mine. Not what I would call a spectacular writing, but warm and amusing nonetheless. The romance didn't make much sense, but I'm not complaining. I especially appreciate the great familiarity the author has with various fairy tales, including those not very well known in the West - finally someone outside of Russia gets the Hunchbacked Horse!

Mercedes Lackey is one of my guilty pleasures. And the lampshade-hanging trope-rich (and trope-enforced) fractured fairytales in this book are delightful
