Reckoning
Reckoning | John Grisham
New York Times bestselling author John Grisham returns to Clanton, Mississippi, to tell the story of an unthinkable murder and the bizarre trial that follows it, in this powerful new legal thriller. Pete Banning was Clanton's favorite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, father, neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning in 1946. he rose early, drove into town, walked into the Church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell. As if the murder wasn't shocking enough, it was even more baffling that Pete's only statement about it--to the sheriff, to his defense attorney, to the judge, to his family and friends, and to the people of Clanton--was "I have nothing to say." And so the murder of the esteemed Reverend Bell became the most mysterious and unforgettable crime Ford County had ever known.

I keep reading Grisham, hoping for the same smart, taut, suspenseful storytelling of his early novels but his later works barely muster a so-so for me. But still I keep hoping and reading…

I‘m really behind in reading John Grisham books. I really liked this one so I‘m glad I finally did read it. It was a very long book (over 500 pages) but it always held my interest.

marleed I‘m trying to read the JG canon. I‘ve thrifted all but the newest book in hardback but A time to kill is in paperback- impossible to find a thrifted HB of that one I think it‘s have 10 more books (mostly older) to read. 2y

A murder mystery, a courtroom drama, a family saga with a setting in Ford Co., Clanton , MS - the same locale used for A Time to Kill and A Time for Mercy. It was between a pick and a so-so bc the ending was meh. I normally love John Grisham stories...

I thought this book had a lot of promise, I liked the way the timeline of the story went, working the way back to the beginning. But, in the end it fell kind of flat. I felt like the ending was kind of rushed, or something. I'm not sure. Just not as good as I hoped it would be.

Even though I figured out the twist pretty early on, that didn‘t stop me from enjoying the slow unraveling of Grisham‘s story. I liked the historical fiction angle and love the way Grisham writes the South. His Mississippi roots are easy to spot. Special applause to Michael Beck for his outstanding narration 🎉🙌🏻

BarbaraBB And on to the next Grisham? 4y
Cinfhen I‘m toying with the idea.... although I JUST started this one on audio @BarbaraBB ....I think you‘re gonna like it 😉😘 4y

I can‘t really explain it properly but I learned the hard way. 🤪😂🙄 4y

I had no idea I was going to get a HF novel mixed within this legal thriller but I‘m knee deep in Japan and WWII and I‘m enthralled. Michael Beck might be one of my favorite male narrators.

This book was a bit more disturbing for me than other Grisham novels I've read. I think the subject matter and also capital punishment were a bit too heavy for my reading style. I enjoyed this book, but I do not generally like such a dark storyline.

How absolutely heartbreaking this story ended up being.. 🙁 I figured that Liza having relations with another man was the reason behind Pete murdering Dexter, but when it all revealed in the final chapter what happened when Pete was assumed dead in the war, it made Pete and Lizas deaths even sadder 💔 And i was absolutely stunned that it turned out to not even be Dexter who Liza had relations with!!

Have not read a book by Grisham in a while. Loved this one and now may have to see what I have missed along the way. Normal legal banter but he tells the story backwards and in the middle you learn about the Bataan Death March during WW11. Good characters, good story, good ending.

Well written as any other Grisham book but kind of hard to put together the two stories narrated into it. You get to the end but not the way you would expect the two stories would come together. #2019

This was good but not great. It really dragged on for me, and I thought the ending was anticlimactic. I suppose this book didn‘t stand a chance since I was reading it at the same time I was doing a reread of To Kill a Mockingbird. Two books set in the south that deal with issues of race...one was outstanding, and the other was pretty meh. This one was the one that was pretty meh 😑

marleed I thought the story was disjointed. I received the book as a gift so I was trying hard to like it - I really wanted to like it more than I did. . 5y
Melkyl @marleed I completely agree. The separate parts of the story made it hard for me to get invested in the characters. 5y

I finally finished this very long audiobook and was just kind of happy that it was over. It felt like three books put together, really. The first part is the criminal trial, the second part is purely historical fiction about the Bataan Death March and, in my opinion, is in no way related to the rest of the story and could be completely skipped and the reader wouldn't miss anything. The third is civil and probate and the twist that wraps it up.

THE RECKONING is an intriguing and tragic southern family drama with layers of legal suspense. We are skillfully transported to the 1940‘s and the Deep South culture of Clanton, Mississippi. The writing was captivating and detailed. Perhaps a little to detailed.... https://www.bluestockingreviews.com/blog/the-reckoning

While I believe that his first four books will ALWAYS be his best, this one still ranks near the top. For years it seems Grisham has been cranking out so-so, formulaic work. Recently, I only checked out his audiobooks when nothing else was available. But this one is surprisingly good. Fully developed characters, family drama and dysfunction, and lots of legal maneuvering. 3.5/5 stars...finally! #crime #legalthriller #audiobook

This book was strangely written. I thought middle part all about the war started out boring but I was actually drawn into it. This is me and Chico this morning. This year we're celebrating our 8th year together...wow! Chico's first three years on earth were very rough, then somebody (I know who) drove him out here and dumped him like trash. Me and my hubby scooped him up and fell in love❤️ He is the best little dog and I know our time is limited as he has IVDD, inoperable. 🐾 Even at 11yrs and with this disease, Chico is pure love.

As an avid fan of John Grisham, I was anxiously waiting for his latest book and am thrilled to say I was not disappointed! This is an intriguing thriller from the opening chapter and it totally sucks you in. There‘s a section where he expands on the main character‘s service in the military that goes on for a little bit longer than I would have liked. That is probably the only complaint I have about the book. The twist at the end - wow!

MonicaLoves2Read Loved this book. Like you, that twist at the end was something else!🤔 6y

I enjoyed the latest John Grisham. It‘s definitely not one of my favorites, however. It was advertised as being different then the rest of his novels. And it was…reasons in the comments so not to spoil it.

LisaJo The book is told in three parts the first part is the crime and its outcome. The last part is where all the secrets and lies and stories come together to explain the first part. The middle part tells the story of action in the Pacific theater during World War II. Specifically the Philippines. Yeah, was not expecting that. 6y
