Joy For Beginners
Joy For Beginners | Erica Bauermeister
A Library Journal Best Book of the Year What would you do with a second chance at life? Having survived a life-threatening illness, Kate celebrates by gathering with six close friends. At an intimate outdoor dinner on a warm September evening, the women challenge Kate to start her new lease on life by going white-water rafting down the Grand Canyon with her daughter. But Kate is reluctant to take the risk. That is, until her friend Marion proposes a pact: if Kate will face the rapids, each woman will do one thing in the next year that scares her. Kate agrees, with one provision she didn't get to choose her challenge, so she gets to choose theirs. Whether it's learning to let go of the past or getting a tattoo, each woman's story interweaves with the others, forming a seamless portrait of the power of female friendships. From the author of The School of Essential Ingredients comes a beautifully crafted novel about daring to experience true joy, starting one small step at a time.

I fell in love with this author‘s beautiful writing from a previous book (The Scent Keeper) and was a bit anxious that it had been a one-and-done love for me…totally not so. This is a story about female friendships, how they bolster and sustain, not just on the day-to-day but especially through the darkest times in our lives.
Seven friends come together to share a meal and the successful culmination of one of their own‘s life struggle. When 🔻

robinb one is challenged by her daughter to join her on a rafting trip in the Grand Canyon, they are each tasked with tackling something that scares them during the next year (nothing death-defying and one of them thoughtfully chooses the tasks for each friend based on her knowledge of and love for them).
What I loved most about this book (other than the poetic writing) was the insight into each woman‘s particular stage in her life…her fears, 🔻

CBee Sounds lovely! I still haven‘t read The Scent Keeper. 2y

robinb @CBee Girl, you‘d better get on it! 😂 😂 (And I certainly have no room to talk judging by my TBR!) I hope you‘ll love her writing as well. 💙 2y
CBee @robinb ha! I have so many others to work on and can only read one at a time 🤦‍♀️ Luckily there are audiobooks! 2y
robinb @CBee I can only read one at a time…I can‘t have multiple plots going at the same time (kind of like my life LOL). Unfortunately I don‘t do audiobooks. 2y
CBee @robinb I didn‘t either for a long time, but when I did the buddy read for A Promised Land, I had to. I could never have gotten through it if I hadn‘t 😂 I‘m better at audio nonfiction - holds my interest more that way. 2y
robinb @CBee TBH I‘ve never TRIED audio, I may give it a try at some point. Maybe I‘m afraid I‘ll like it…😉😂 2y
CBee @robinb it can‘t hurt! You could try some audiobooks from the library and see what you think before buying anything? 2y
robinb @CBee Yes, that‘s definitely where I‘d start. 👍 2y

Forgive the intimacy of this passage, but this description of menopause and a change in life really resonated with me. 💙
While this may sound dark and depressing 😂, the character was actually thankful that she had experienced and was living the highs and lows of life…a complete life.

This was a pleasant novel about a circle of lovely, supportive friends. Each chapter focuses on a different woman from the group confronting her own special challenge. It was a bit contrived.

I think I liked it? Lots of characters to keep track of, and it took a minute to get into the story, but I did end up enjoying listening to each character‘s challenge.

Joy for Beginners is about a group of women whose lives are interconnected, and how they support each other. Kate has been encouraged by her friends to do something outside of her comfort zone. They, in turn, agree to let Kate choose something for each of them to do. This is the story of what she chooses for each of them and why, and how it enriches their lives.

Another wonderful book from Erica Bauermeister! I love her writing style, and the way she gets to the heart of every character. The ending of this one I thought was truly beautiful.

“I think love is kind of like those waves out there,” she said. “You ride one in to the beach, and it‘s the most amazing thing you‘ve ever felt. But at some point the water goes back out; it has too. And maybe you‘re lucky- maybe you‘re both too busy to do anything drastic. Maybe you‘re good as friends, so you stay. And then something happens- maybe it‘s something as big as a baby, or as small as him unloading the dishwasher- and the wave comes ⬇️

Soubhiville Back in again. And it does that, over and over. I just think sometimes people forget to wait.” 5y
Soubhiville What a perfect description of love and long term relationships. This author really has a way with words. 💕 5y

Rushed home to throw on comfy clothes, and pop my headphones in so I can find out what happens at the end of this book. Bagels, cat cuddles and good books. This is what happiness is. ♥️🧡💛

Zelma I agree with all of those things! 6y

Next up on my list of holds on Libby. Another light and easy audiobook to fall asleep tonight. 💕

On another note, I simply cannot get this cat off of me. He‘s stuck like glue. My sweet Totem. 💕

Delightful, sort of a woman who assigns her closest friends something they are reluctant to do. Charming.

I‘m on a roll here. Another book with 100% rating on Litsy that I was disappointed with. Granted, it would be hard for any book to follow my previous read, What I Loved. This was on my TBR pile so I‘m happy to get it off the shelf and out the door. It was just too contrived for my taste. I‘d pan it but it‘s too early in the morning to be so mean. #MountTBR

Leftcoastzen I am always skeptical of soft focus covers.I am not trying to dump on anyone‘s favorites ,but I am not too fond of Books that seem contrived and contain general sweetness. 7y
Suet624 @Leftcoastzen I so appreciated your comment. Soft focus covers, yes! And this book had a general sweetness that I wanted to smack around. 7y

Flying through this month's book club selection- so not a book I would have ever picked up on my own...which I suppose is the point of a #bookclub 😝 #currentlyreading

Finished a book club before book club - woo hoo! Loved this book and getting to know each of the characters. I'm looking forward to our discussion and seeing what my friends would challenge me to do. Maybe I'll start a 2018 goal list from it.

Day 11 #AndItsAugust #StartsWithJ Here are nine books that I've read and enjoyed that start with the letter J. Mostly fiction, except for Julie & Julia, and I did have to include one of my very favorite cookbooks. Actually cookbook-wise I have about a dozen that start with J. Apparently there are lots of J-chef's: Jamie, Jacques, Jean-Georges, Joy Bauer & Joy the Baker, who start cookbook titles with their names. 😆🍴📚👍

AmyG Ottolenghi...wonderful cookbooks! 7y
ValerieAndBooks And there's Judith Jones too...a foodie who just recently passed away. Maybe I should tell my kids to look for partners with a J name so that they're well fed 😊 7y
