Portable Dorothy Parker
Portable Dorothy Parker | Dorothy Parker
The second revision in sixty years, this sublime collection ranges over the verse, stories, essays, and journalism of one of the twentieth century's most quotable authors.For this new twenty-first-century edition, devoted admirers can be sure to find their favorite verse and stories. But a variety of fresh material has also been added to create a fuller, more authentic picture of her life's work. There are some stories new to the Portable, "Such a Pretty Little Picture," along with a selection of articles written for such disparate publications as Vogue, McCall's, House and Garden, and New Masses. Two of these pieces concern home decorating, a subject not usually associated with Mrs. Parker. At the heart of her serious work lies her political writings-racial, labor, international-and so "Soldiers of the Republic" is joined by reprints of "Not Enough" and "Sophisticated Poetry-And the Hell With It," both of which first appeared in New Masses. "A Dorothy Parker Sampler" blends the sublime and the silly with the terrifying, a sort of tasting menu of verse, stories, essays, political journalism, a speech on writing, plus a catchy off-the-cuff rhyme she never thought to write down.The introduction of two new sections is intended to provide the richest possible sense of Parker herself. "Self-Portrait" reprints an interview she did in 1956 with The Paris Review, part of a famed ongoing series of conversations ("Writers at Work") that the literary journal conducted with the best of twentieth-century writers. What makes the interviews so interesting is that they were permitted to edit their transcripts before publication, resulting in miniature autobiographies."Letters: 1905-1962," which might be subtitled "Mrs. Parker Completely Uncensored," presents correspondence written over the period of a half century, beginning in 1905 when twelve-year-old Dottie wrote her father during a summer vacation on Long Island, and concluding with a 1962 missive from Hollywood describing her fondness for Marilyn Monroe.A Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition with French flaps, rough front, and luxurious packagingFeatures an introduction from Marion Meade andcover illustrations byrenowned graphic artist Seth, creator of the comic series Palooka-ville"

My July #bookspin and #doublebookspin are a Rory Gilmore book and a Litsy TBR, respectively. Both the tagged book and DFW‘s Consider the Lobster are on the Gilmore list. I couldn‘t decide between them, so I‘ll read them both for a while and see which one I finish first! 😂 Regeneration is on the #1001books list, but unbeknownst to myself, I also put it on my Litsy stack, so…two birds, one stone. 😂 I think this will be a good reading month! 🤞🏻

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! Good luck!! 2y

Libby was hiding The Portable Dorothy Parker from me as "Selected Readings from..." As far as I can tell, the only one from the print version that's missing is "The Waltz", and you can get Tallulah Bankhead reading that one on YouTube (you're welcome, btw): https://youtu.be/WKR9GyrXELE

(Day 2 - #BasketCase)

*The narrator of Dorothy Parker‘s short story, titled “A Telephone Call,” is progressively becoming a “basket case.” Readers can actually sense her coming undone as she cajoles and bargains with God to get a call from her lover. Of course, things have changed a lot since this piece was first published in 1930. But I‘ll bet there are some people who can relate (and who can remember old-fashioned telephones). 😂

Cinfhen Perfect piece!!!! 🏆now she‘d just text him like crazzzy or troll him on Twitter 😜😂😂 5y
KarenUK @cinfhen 😂😂 5y
KarenUK And I totally want to read this story...... 5y
gradcat @Cinfhen I know, right—do you remember busy signals? As obnoxious as they were, I sometimes wish we still had those kinds of telecommunications...I hate that everyone knows where I am...all the time!! 😂 5y
gradcat @KarenUK It kind of hits too close to home...when we were young & dumb! 5y

Found this at B&N and couldn't resist the splurge! It has most of her writings including some book reviews of her contemporaries! I decided to donate my older smaller collection of hers to the library.

DGRachel That‘s a fantastic cover! 5y

Men
They hail you as their morning star
Because you are the way you are.
If you return the sentiment,
They'll try to make you different;
And once they have you, safe and sound,
They want to change you all around.
Your moods and ways they put a curse on;
They'd make of you another person.
They cannot let you go your gait;
They influence and educate.
They'd alter all that they admired.
They make me sick, they make me tired.

How do YOU organize your books? By genre? By author? Size? I have no system and think I need one. And yes, I'm watching Gilmore Girls.

This is a collection of her short stories and poetry. Hands down one of my favorite poets, she is so witty and her humor is so on point. "Big Blonde" is my favorite short story.
