Ghostly Tales
Ghostly Tales: Spine-Chilling Stories of the Victorian Age | Chronicle Books
14 posts | 5 read | 13 to read
A vengeful phantom lurks in a country graveyard. A whaling crew becomes trapped on a haunted ship. A human skull is kept locked in a cupboard, but sometimes at night, it screams. . . . This collection of tales transports the reader to a time when staircases creaked in old manor houses, and a candle could be blown out by a gust of wind, or by a passing ghost. Penned by some of the greatest Victorian novelists and masters of the ghost story genre, each story is illustrated with exquisitely eerie artwork in this special ebook.

Not all ghost stories need to be guts and gore. Sometimes, it‘s what‘s left to the imagination. Perhaps you‘re just overthinking it. There‘s no way a skull, locked away in a hatbox, can scream…right? I bought this collection after seeing ShiningNathan reading it on TikTok. So glad I did. There‘s not much that can beat a Victorian-era ghost story. ☺️ #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt

My #Litsypenpal outdid herself once again for our Halloween gift exchange! Thanks, Becky(@beck9lol) for all the ghoulish goodies! My manager at B&N read ‘The Death of Jane Lawrence‘ and said the creep factor is off the charts! 🎃 I can‘t wait to do a deep dive into all of these. The candy was en pointe .. so much so that this is all that‘s left .. Lol! Thanks again to the best #Litsypenpal on the planet. 😎🎃👻💀🧡🖤

These stickers were so much fun! 🦇Eliot and I spent part of this morning decorating my iPad cover haha @Karisa the Disney Halloween cartoons are his favorite! Solid choice 🕷

Clare-Dragonfly Is the lady in the middle a sticker or part of the iPad cover? 2y
StaceGhost @Clare-Dragonfly she‘s a sticker too! It‘s Eir, the Norse goddess. I got it off Etsy from Anetteprs Shop. I love her illustrations! And she donates a portion of her sales to a women‘s shelter ❤️ 2y

Thank you so much for the lovely #AllHallowsReadSwap gifts, @Read-y_Picker ! 🧡🖤💙

The illustrations and endpapers in this book of classic ghost stories are GORGEOUS and I‘ve already wolfed down a chocolate (or three). I especially loved your pretty card and letter, telling how you stalked me and all the little things you found out along the way.

Thank you for this “one book, one treat” swap, @MaleficentBookDragon . It‘s so much fun! 🧡🖤💙

#pricedrop! Yes, I will buy you!

The illustrations in this series are always prettier in person (in the print editions), but I'll take what I can get.

All seven stories within this book are in the public domain, but this collection has enriching illustrations by Bill Bragg and cool gothic endpapers. I completely enjoyed sampling these authors‘ Victorian ghost stories which left me with just enough feeling of the unsettled and uncanny with none of the modern demonic or slasher horror. If you, like me, like the old-fashioned things that go-bump-in-the-night light scare then this is for you, too.

One place I don‘t want to be #onmyown? Stranded in the snowy, desolate moors of England at night, being picked up by a “phantom coach” being driven by a creepy old dude.

This anthology of “spine chilling stories of the Victorian age” was part of my recent Book Outlet haul. 👌🏻
