We visited Beamish "Living Museum of the North" today, which is a fantastic folk museum preserving buildings, furniture, possessions and vehicles of ordinary people from the 1820s to the 1950s. While it was fantastic to ride on an old double decker bus and a tram, and to be transported back to childhood by the distinctive smell of a Dansette portable record player, the most evocative thing for me was this signal box, in which I vividly imagined ⬇️

Bookwomble ... Denholm Eliot brewing a pot of tea to steady his nerves after his encounter with a ghostly locomotive in the classic BBC adaptation. By a stroke of luck, the story is in an illustrated book I brought with me, so I'll re-read it for the umpteenth time, with a small glass of wine, and some Bach cello concertos to accompany the spooky sound of rain on the windows. 📖🍷🎻🌧️👻🚂 2mo

A stranger approaches a railroad signalman, who starts to experience premonitions. The signalman recognizes the signs, having only recently witnessed a fatal rail accident. The stranger attempts at length to convince the signalman there is no premonition—or perhaps he should inform the authorities—but alas, he is too late. A short sad, excellently narrated audiobook. #scarathlon #batbrigade @Catsandbooks

I got almost to the end before realizing I‘d read this one years ago, but it‘s well worth revisiting. In true Dickens fashion it‘s both spooky and sad. #scarathlon #skeletoncrew @Emilymdxn

🎃 I avoid horror most of the time, so I don't have a book that has totally scared me.
🎃 No, but don't mind spooky. The tagged and An Inspector Calls is about the level of horror I can tolerate. I really don't do body horror or zombies.
🎃 Any Ann Radcliffe and Matthew Lewis's The Monk for classic gothic. Laura Purcell (The Shape of Darkness), Daphe du Maurier (Rebecca/Jamaica Inn), and Sarah Waters ⬇️

jenniferw88 ⬆️ (Tipping the Velvet/Fingersmith) for more recent gothic fiction. 13mo
RaeLovesToRead LOVE du Maurier & Waters 🥰 Looking forward to reading my Purcell books too after meeting the author in London 💕 13mo

Here‘s my TBR of physical books for December. Not pictured, “This Tender Land” which I have on ebook loan from the library. Plus I‘m sure I‘ll end up with others not shown due to audiobooks and other ebooks. Also, super proud of Ripley who was so good while taking this picture. #wintergames #TheFilthyAnimals #TBR

alisiakae Just Mercy is so good! And I‘m glad I saw this, I had planned on reading Krampus and then forgot all about it! 5y
Skygoddess1 @4thhouseontheleft I‘m looking forward to reading it. After the Sarah Dessen Twitter incident I immediately put this book on my TBR. There‘s a book tuner who‘s leading a readalong of it on Goodreads this month, so perfect timing. Happy I could help@remind you about Krampus, I‘ve had the book on my shelves for years. 5y

Our book club read a #GhostStory collection a couple of Chritmasses ago, and this was the first story in the book; coincidentally, a TV adaption from the 70s was broadcast over that same Christmas.

I really enjoyed this ghostly little tale. I love that the Victorians read spooky stories at Christmas time. I try to re-read A Christmas Carol every year as well for the last ten years or so as it is one of my favorite books. This Signalman is a story that makes you give pause and think what really just happened? I love the bold design of the Illustrations as well. #catsoflitsy meet Fish he is 13 and a snuggler

DebinHawaii Fish is a handsome and fluffy boy!!🐱❤️ 7y
ReadingRover Omg what a cute fluffernutter!!! You got a one-eyed cat and I got a one-eyed cat! Mine goes by Cyclops😜! Unless yours is just winking. Lol then I‘m just seeming like a weirdo and announcing my cat‘s one-eyed-ness!!! 7y
CoffeeCatsBooks So fluffy!! 😻😻 7y
Palimpsest @DebinHawaii And @CoffeeCatsBooks, thank you! He is super fluffy! @ReadingRover yes, he is a one-eyed cat! My niece named him and I didn‘t change it as it seems to suit him. 😊 (edited) 7y

This cute collection is wonderful. The Signalman is mixed in here with other holiday stories. I got this through an email from audible it‘s free as a gift to members. I would definitely recommend it if you are a festive person. #christmasread

I don‘t have a copy of #TheSignalman, so here‘s a picture of my daughter reading in the bookshop at The Dickens Fair. I bet there‘s a copy of it in there somewhere... #DickensianDecember @jenniferw88

I had a really creepy walk with the puppy this morning on the common. I half expected to see a red light followed by an apparition warning of tragedy! 👻🚨
