The spellbinding tale of six queer witches forging their own paths, shrouded in the mist, magic, and secrets of the ancient California redwoods. Danny didn't know what she was looking for when she and her mother spread out a map of the United States and Danny put her finger down on Tempest, California. What she finds are the Grays: a group of friends who throw around terms like queer and witch like they're ordinary and everyday, though they feel like an earthquake to Danny. But Danny didn't just find the Grays. They cast a spell that calls her halfway across the country, because she has something they need: she can bring back Imogen, the most powerful of the Grays, missing since the summer night she wandered into the woods alone. But before Danny can find Imogen, she finds a dead boy with a redwood branch through his heart. Something is very wrong amid the trees and fog of the Lost Coast, and whatever it is, it can kill. Lush, eerie, and imaginative, Amy Rose Capetta's tale overflows with the perils and power of discovery -- and what it means to find your home, yourself, and your way forward.

An absolute delight. ❤️ Witchy, girls kissing girls (and not-girls), a dark and sweet mystery, what more could I ask for?

I think this is my #doublespin for February. By this point in the month I‘ve always forgotten which is which 😂

Bailedbailed

As soon as I opened this, I had no clue what was happening. During the first 80 pages this book jumps between at least five perspectives and multiple timelines. To top it all off, it switches between first and third person. There were times though, during the “now”, sections where I didn‘t want to stop reading. But as soon as it switched to the perspective of the ravens or the trees, I wanted to bail immediately.

Yuki_Onna @Ozma.of.Oz Oh boy, that's so tough. I cannot even begin to think how you must feel right now. 😞 All the best to you and all the strength you need! 💕 4y
TEArificbooks I completely understand. 3 years ago we adopted some elderly dogs. Yesterday we had to put one of them down and it wrecked me. It was the right thing to do, but the house feels so empty now. My other dog is even older and I know he won‘t last much either, especially now that his brother is gone. I am looking at losing all my pets in the next month. 4y
SamAnne Oh so sorry. I will be a puddle when my canine leaves this world. Condolences. 4y

This book made me EMOTIONAL; queer characters written by a queer author means none of the weird hyper-sexualization OR the forced lack of sexuality or desire. Don‘t get me wrong this isn‘t smut lmao it‘s YA and not even a romance, but it‘s authentic to queer life and teen life and it‘s raw reality in a fun way. Omg please read this book please please please I loved it so much. Plus witches I mean come on what more could you want.

I love how inclusive young adult lit is, and this is a perfect example. Five queer witches, all with their own gender identities and sexuality, all respectful and supportive of one another while also trying to solve a magical mystery. Really lovely.

CareBear Hey Amanda! Just wanted to check in and see if you had a chance to mail the three owl post books you have. 💕 5y

This wasn't my favorite book by ARC, but I did enjoy it. I couldn't fully connect with any of the characters, but thought that the magic was interesting. The atmosphere of the setting was done nearly perfectly, however. I really like when magic is connected to nature, and this was a great example of that. The redwood forest scenes were my favorite of the book. The setting is reminiscent of The Raven Boys, but the similarities don't really ⬇️

rjsthumbelina ...extend any further than that. I did like that most of the characters were queer as well. Listened to this #audiobook via #scribd #queerbooks 5y

I've heard quite mixed things about this one but I'm giving it a go! How bad can queer witches be?!

Scochrane26 The cover is really pretty. 5y
LizzieLou I really enjoyed it. Love the descriptions of the forest I really felt like I was there, all damp and foggy. 5y

I‘m here to keep this month of queer lit going... though to be fair I still read a lot of queer lit all year round. In June I read ONLY queer books.

New favorite. Brought the energy of raven cycle into a far more satisfying story. I loved this story and the characters. Witches and a deep connection to nature. Diverse cast of characters. Queer. And chronic pain rep that actually felt real and like real rep to me.

rjsthumbelina Glad I'm not the only one seeing a connection to The Raven Boys! I have about 2 hrs left in the audio and just keep thinking how much it has the same vibes. But in a good way, not like it is borrowing from it 5y
Chasingmermaids @rjsthumbelina exactly!!! It has its own story and feelings but that creepy forest magic is just dead on. 5y

Love love loved it!!! All I had to do was look at that cover and read the first few words of the synopsis and I was sold!! 💖✨✨
I saw a review on Goodreads saying they thought it felt a little like The Raven Boys series and I would say I agree. I only wish this was a series!

Happy Friday everyone! 😁

I loved the aesthetic and the diversity (queer POC witches for the win!) but ultimately failed to deliver. There were too many POV changes and the storyline was boring. Full review on my blog: https://wp.me/p9zANx-kl
