Whisper Network
Whisper Network: A Novel | Chandler Baker
If only youd listened to us, none of this would have happened. Sloane, Ardie, Grace, and Rosalita have worked at Truviv, Inc. for years. The sudden death of Truvivs CEO means their boss, Ames, will likely take over the entire company. Each of the women has a different relationship with Ames, who has always been surrounded by whispers about how he treats women. Those whispers have been ignored, swept under the rug, hidden away by those in charge. But the world has changed, and the women are watching this promotion differently. This time, when they find out Ames is making an inappropriate move on a colleague, they arent willing to let it go. This time, theyve decided enough is enough. Sloane and her colleagues decision to take a stand sets in motion a catastrophic shift in the office. Lies will be uncovered. Secrets will be exposed. And not everyone will survive. All of their livesas women, colleagues, mothers, wives, friends, even adversarieswill change dramatically as a result. "If only you had listened to us, they tell us on page one, none of this would have happened." Whisper Network manages to be provocative, timely, and a ripping good read: A murder mystery and a manifesto all rolled up into one. I couldnt put it down. Wow. I want to call this book very "current-events" but that would insinuate that sexual advances are new and not something that has been taking place in society for decades. Instead, simply, technology has made these instances more forthcoming and allowing more people to be aware and comfortable to come forward. 5☆

This novel felt like a mix of Big Little Lies and The Escape Room. I devoured it in every free moment I had and finished it in two days. I‘ve read some amazing novels lately and this was a 5 star read for me. A murder mystery and also social commentary on the experience of women, in the workplace and in daily life.

AmyG It reminded me of Big Little Lies, too. 1mo

Sooooo many moments in Chandler Baker's Whisper Network made me sit up and huff a laugh in painful recognition. This book is, on its surface, a mystery and a suspense novel, but it's also a book about women. Much of it is about women in corporate culture, but it's also just about women: the ways that we think we're enlightened and progressive and living in a new world AND the ways that sometimes those things just aren't true. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod It's a feminist book and a true book and a #metoo book.
The suspenseful parts of the novel are solid if not revelatory. There were a few places where the book dragged a bit--I felt as if some sections could have moved faster. But the keen, observing eye of the novel, which comes packaged in a first-person-plural perspective (love it!), is brilliant, and the women at its center are compelling and flawed.
1mo
UnabridgedPod The book focuses on Sloane, Ardie, and Grace, three friends at a firm with different approaches to making it. Sloane is the always-put-together, on-the-fast-track mom/wife who is social and extroverted and sometimes oblivious (sometimes willfully so) but also caring and bold. Ardie is the recently divorced mom who has "opted out" of the high expectations for appearance and fashion, ⬇️ 1mo
UnabridgedPod t he brilliant lawyer who is an introvert but also fiercely loyal to her friends. And Grace is the new mom who is struggling with sleeplessness and the need to maintain her beauty-pageant appearance, while she's also pumping and trying to maintain her marriage. Into their midst comes Katherine, a young lawyer who seems to be susceptible to the predation of Ames, a man who plays a role in the lives of each woman. ⬇️ 1mo
See All 11 Comments
UnabridgedPod When Sloane, Ardie, and Grace band together to try to protect Katherine, they end up taking on a culture that has in the past remained a silent but obvious threat.⠀

There's a lot going on here: a secret and anonymous spreadsheet of men that women should avoid; a subplot about Sloane's daughter being bullied at school (I LOOOOVE this one), ⬇️
1mo
UnabridgedPod a cleaning lady at the office who becomes increasingly important, and complicated family dynamics for each woman that play into her decisions. It's not a perfect novel, but it is one that made me think. A lot. 1mo

It's a frosty November morning here in Virginia, and I (Jen) am starting The Whisper Network, the first book I'm beginning in November. (I finished Julia Phillips's Disappearing Earth this morning. Wow.) ⠀

Anyway, I found that my October TBR was taken over by deadlines--due dates for the library, books I needed to read for the podcast, and book club selections. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod I'm hoping this month to dive into the pile of books that I actually. own.(!) that I've been saving. (I must confess here that I did cave this week, after vowing not to put more library books on hold, and added a significant stack to my holds list. The new arrivals list is just too tempting!).⠀

So what are you reading today? What are you planning to read in November?

I wanted to like it more than I did. It was difficult to read it for any extended amount of time. A fictional "me, too" law office story. The disparities between women and men in the work force are aggravating, but the book was simple and pretty predictable.

JHSiess Agreed. I'm a civil rts attorney & have litigated 100's of cases so it was disappointing on a few levels. Stereotypical, predictable, & the narration was horrid (I listened on Audible). 1mo

An unrepentantly feminist novel about male entitlement and privilege in a large corporation. This was such a real world look at how professional women are treated then beaten down when trying to change things. I just loved it and frankly felt validated by it. This could be a one-sitting read for sure.

This book infuriated me. It's been a long time since a book really got me furious. About half way through the book and I was ready to put it down and thinking of bad reviews. It's been heard of too many times. Someone does something wrong, that someone dies, and all of a sudden becomes a marder instead of being remembered for the horrible thing they did. This book was filled with real problems, and back stabbing. But an amazing ending! Must read.

The first time I was sexually harassed at work, I was 17, and the man was over twice my age. I was 14 the first time a teacher harassed me. My dad didn‘t want to believe that I‘ve had at least 50 separate instances of harassment in my 40 years. I am not the exception.

While this book MAY be extreme, I think it makes an important point about the pervasiveness and effect of harassment of women by men in power. 4⭐️

marleed I‘ve often thought I could never detail my distinct harassment experiences. They would number so many that I wouldn‘t be believed. Most I‘ve never spoken of. I‘m so thankful the conversation has come to the table so everyone can learn at an early and aging age that this is not okay. 4mo
Crazeedi I'm of the era where this happened and we just brushed it off, didn't talk about, dealt with the best we could. Many incidents weren't overt, just words or looks... 4mo
Chrissyreadit @Megabooks yes- too many to count and I‘ve been shocked a couple times by women who discredit the me too movement because it never happened to them. Maybe not, or maybe they believed it was ok- but most women I know have been harassed and/or assaulted and ignored. 4mo
Megabooks @marleed Yes! My dad was surprised i didn‘t know a number. And I was thinking, it‘s not like I kept a log! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I only came forward once because I felt really unsafe, but my employer waited until a second woman came forward almost a year later until firing him. HR is usually a joke when it comes to complaints. 4mo
Megabooks @Crazeedi And people say, show me the proof, and I‘m like how can I prove to you that I know I shouldn‘t be the last one in the office with this man. We‘re women. We know. 4mo
Megabooks @Chrissyreadit one of the characters didn‘t believe she was harassed, but when the author had her think back on certain experiences, it was clear to the reader that she was brushing it off/in denial. But she believed her friends, which is a huge step! 4mo
marleed I grew up in an era where a kid would never have reported an adult - not even when said adult taught sophomore theology and told you he had to sit or stay behind the podium when he taught because of the effects I had on him. Geesh~~~ Later I learned he was imprisoned for molesting boys. I can only imagine what would not have happened to them if I had spoken up. 4mo
Crazeedi @marleed so sad. 4mo
Crazeedi @Megabooks we just must make sure women are aware. It's bad when there are accusations that aren't true, gives all the real incidents less credibility. So I think awareness and understanding will come. Not every thing is harassment, but we know when it is, right? 4mo
Megabooks @marleed I‘m sorry you went through that, and I feel even worse about the kids he violated!! I was touring the Biltmore Estate with my quiz bowl coach (the whole team was on the trip) and he leaned over and said, “that‘s the 69 bed because it‘s got pillows on the head and foot.” Pretty inappropriate, IMO. 4mo
Megabooks @marleed And I was not the only girl he spoke to like that. And that was far from the only time. I graduated in 1998 and no on reported him until 2009 and all they did was transfer him to another school. 🤦🏻‍♀️ We all knew, but we also knew we wouldn‘t be heard. (edited) 4mo
Megabooks @Crazeedi That‘s how I feel. I‘ve learned to trust my own instincts, but I know there‘s usually not a paper trail to prove it. But you also worry about when sharing a concern with another woman would be interpreted as slander, and this book explores that, too, which was good. 4mo
marleed @Megabooks @Crazeedi That was just one of the inappropriate things he said to me. I made my peace because nothing about that experience shaped who I was as an adult. But years later when someone told me he had died in prison, I googled him. When I read all the things he did (he had moved from my town after my sophomore year), it saddened me that it never even seemed an option to speak up. 4mo
Megabooks @marleed 😢 I understand. 4mo
Crazeedi @marleed that's just awful, my heart is so sad, when I was in high school and workplace, we just didn't say anything. I was assaulted at a party and more, and I think my experience isn't unusual. And I never did anything about it, this was in the 80s. 3mo
marleed @Crazeedi @Megabooks I‘m grateful for the #MeToo movement because it‘s brought the conversation to the dinner table not just some mandatory office training that everyone shrugs off. I‘m hopeful it‘s breaking generations of inappropriateness. This fictional book helps sans preconceived emotions of non fiction people! 3mo
Smrloomis 😔💕💕💕 3mo
Megabooks @Crazeedi I‘m sorry that happened to you! @marleed I‘m glad we‘re no longer only whispering about it as well. It‘s better when we stand up together!! 3mo

I‘ve been reading this book on-and-off all night, and I vehemently hate this font!! It is really hard for me to read. I‘m tempted to get on the list for the library ebook!! 😡😡

This is page 1 to avoid spoilers.

Lcsmcat What is it about the font that bothers you? That the drop cap is different, or the main font? I‘m genuinely curious. 4mo
Megabooks @Lcsmcat It‘s the main font. I would have trouble with any font that is spaced that closely between lines, and it is smaller in size than it appears in the picture. But there is something about the shape of the letters that adds to the spacing and size that just makes it darn near illegible in my lap!! 4mo
ValerieAndBooks I have bailed on books based on their font alone! Mainly due to my aging eyes. But there was this one where the commas had too-long tails 😬 @megabooks @Lcsmcat 3mo
Lcsmcat @ValerieAndBooks @Megabooks I don‘t think I‘ve ever bailed due to the font. I‘ve gone to a different edition if the print was too small in the one I started with, or changed the font size on my Kindle. 3mo
Megabooks @Lcsmcat @ValerieAndBooks I have the font blown up on my kindle and a sans serif one picked, which is easier for me to read, but lately I‘ve just wanted to hold print books. There‘s just something about them. 🥰🥰 3mo

It‘s Big Little Lies meets the #metoo movement, but without Moriarty‘s skill for character development. I loved the way the book addressed responsibility of women to stand up for each other. The stand out parts were the chorus sections. They were a collective voice talking about women‘s experience in the work place. Sexual harassment was 1 subject addressed, but there were plenty of others. The plot was a bit heavy handed overall, but still good.

This has a strong start. I liked how the story was told from multiple points of view, it's from a local author, and set in a nearby location. However, I could not relate to any of the characters. Read the author's note, it adds weight. This book was so far from reality that it dashed the hopes I had in the first half. It was a fast read, and I may have liked it more if the introvert character had been handled better. Let's discuss mbti!

I almost always give Reese Witherspoon‘s picks a chance and this was another good one. It wasn‘t a fun read in any way but a timely one. I thought the author did a good job capturing #MeToo and sexual harassment in all its forms. I listened to the audiobook and that made it challenging to keep up with the passage of time and the number of characters.

What made this book shine is the fleshed out female friendships and how Baker really has her finger on the pulse of the #metoo era. It wouldn't necessarily have been a pick for me without these timely, relatable insights sprinkled throughout. The plot itself was promising, but the buildup to the reveal and the overall rollout of the ending could have been smoother.
