Some Danger Involved
Some Danger Involved: A Novel | Will Thomas
15 posts | 21 read | 19 to read
An atmospheric debut novel set on the gritty streets of Victorian London, Some Danger Involved introduces detective Cyrus Barker and his apprentice, Thomas Llewelyn, as they work to solve the gruesome murder of a young scholar. When a student bearing a striking resemblance to artists' renderings of Jesus Christ is found murdered -- by crucifixion -- in London's Jewish ghetto, 19th-century private detective Barker must hire an assistant to help him solve the sinister case. Out of all who answer an ad for a position with "some danger involved," the eccentric and enigmatic Barker chooses downtrodden Llewelyn, a gutsy young man whose murky past includes recent stints at both an Oxford college and an Oxford prison. As Llewelyn learns the ropes of his position, he is drawn deeper and deeper into Barker's peculiar world of vigilante detective work, as well as the dark heart of London's teeming underworld. Together they pass through chophouses, stables, and clandestine tea rooms, tangling with the early Italian mafia, a mad professor of eugenics, and other shadowy figures, inching ever closer to the shocking truth behind the murder. Brimming with wit and unforgettable characters, and steeped in authentic period detail, Some Danger Involved is a captivating page-turner that introduces an equally captivating duo while signaling the start of an exciting career for Will Thomas.

Read the first book in the Barker & Llewelyn series. This was an interesting start to a series and I‘ll continue on here. For some reason, I kept getting Sherlock vibes, but Baker was really nothing like Sherlock. He‘s just a private detective.

But I really liked the characters and the setting. So I can‘t wait to pick up more of these mysteries.

This sounded like a Holmes knock off. That‘s not a horrible thing.
The writing was tolerable and the story was good. I feel like it could have been flushed out a bit more.
This is the first in a series. I will venture back to the series but I‘m not in a hurry to read book 2 right now. 3 ⭐️

This was my October #DoubleSpin, and I‘m so glad it came up. I‘ve been meaning to try this series for awhile, and I intend to continue on. A bit slow in parts but with a surprising twist at the end, this is an historical mystery series set in Victorian London with two very interesting leads. Barker is a mysterious, James Bond-like character and Llewelyn is his newly hired down-on-his-luck assistant (the last one died on the job). Enjoyed! 4/5⭐️

Finished this one a few days ago. Loved it. A duo of detectives, Barker and Llewelyn, vaguely similar to Holmes and Watson. The story is narrated by Llewelyn, the young assistant. I'll most likely read the entire series. 😍👌👍

Nute You sold this book series to me! Stacking! 4y

Got this in the mail yesterday. Dropped my other reads and jumped into this one. I'm about 20% into it and liking it immensely. We'll see if it holds my interest all the way through.

Break time. Starting this - seems like a variation on the Great Detective/chronicling dogsbody theme, but a promising enough beginning.

quietjenn Had to return it to the library. Maybe I'll give it a go some other time. 6y

This is the first book in a series very like a re-vamped Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novel. There is more detail and more excitement in this series than the Sherlock Holmes collection, though. Intriguing enough to keep a reader hooked and very enjoyable. I am a bit obsessed with British literature, though, and this series feeds the addiction.

Classic Victorian detective tale, the skilled detective with a mysterious past, his new assistant both naive but with a hidden toughness, a gruesome murder of a young Jewish teacher. I should have enjoyed this, but the detective is just to much of a Mary Sue; a skilled detective in the Sherlock style, a master of weapons but seemingly without any flaws, no sociopathic tendency, no darkness in the personality. I wanted a twist, it did not happen.

A Jewish man, who bearing a striking resemblance to Jesus Christ, is found crucified in London's ghetto. Now a freshly formed detective duo hunt down the killer before it is too late.
This is an enjoyable book for any fan of mystery as it follows the classic detective story, but with more eccentricity. It also is well researched historically and narrates a part of European and Jewish history that is typically not covered. #Missing #MayBookFlowers
