Prompt: Gesture
Such a powerful poem. I want to read more by this poet. I tagged the book this poem in case anyone else is interested.
I first heard of Jericho Brown on Krista Tippet‘s podcast “On Being”. He impressed me. A Southern black gay poet and professor, he writes of love, race and sex. The poems are spare. Not one unnecessary word. I can‘t say that I understood everything, but I do know that I will keep trying. This book won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for poetry.

For 19 years, the Free Library of Philadelphia has promoted literacy, library usage and civic dialogue through its One Book, One Philadelphia program. This is the first time that a book of poetry was chosen. I attended the opening event online and was captivated by the charisma of Jericho Brown!
Virtual events are taking place throughout the month :

I don't read poetry often, but was drawn to this collection. Jericho's writing is so beautiful that I even enjoyed reading the poems that I could not resonate with.
"Gratitude is black— / Black as a hero returning from war to a country / that banked on his death. / Thank God. It can‘t get much darker than that."
-"Hero"
Started this incredible book of poems on this sunny Saturday morning!

I will not shoot myself
In the head, and I will not shoot myself
In the back, and I will not hang myself
With a trashbag, and if I do,
I promise you, I will not do it
In a police car while handcuffed
Or in the jail cell of a town
I only know the name of
Because I have to drive through it
To get home.

In this Pulitzer Prize-winning collection, gay poet Jericho Brown shines a light on traditions of normalizing racism, rape, police violence & other evils. He battles hate with words of love & truth. “The opposite of rape is understanding.” Morning glories, delphiniums, crape myrtles & other flora represent family strength, pride, sorrows & lives cut short. References to Greek myth & use of a hybrid poetic form add layers of brilliance.#BLM #poetry
Lyrical, gorgeous, raw-there is a lot of graceful power packed into this slim volume. I love this poetry collection and look forward to reading more from Jericho Brown. #poetry #ownvoices #blacklivesmatter #diversespines #BLMReadingList
This book is gorgeous, inside and out!
I love a man I know could die
And not by way of illness
And not by his own hand
But because of the color of that hand and all
His flawless skin.

Being used to ticking various "other" boxes, to my discredit I surely skim over the privilege of my white skin: Jericho Brown sets me straight (in a manner of speaking!) on that.
In the Poetry Book Society bulletin, he says, "If your tears still mean anything to you, I want my poems to make you do the crying that leads to real thinking... . Poems make it impossible to return to the world unbothered.
I am very much bothered!
Don't miss this book.

Copper Canyon Press, thanks for this instruction. I guess I will switch to reading this ebook of poetry on my laptop instead of my phone.

#Bookmail truly is the best mail! I think I have some good ones in here! Any suggestions about what I should read first? #poetry #blackvoices
Another National Book Award for Poetry 2019 finalist. I found some of these poems to be very powerful, others are over my head. Perhaps due to lack of shared experience? The focus here is his life as a gay black American man/son. His father is in many of these. Definitely worth the read. #poetry #nationalbookaward
#holidaytradition Going to old world Christmas market with my aunt! This year marked year 14, and my uncle came along. Her and I have always been the two constants though :) #wintergames #tmskellington please excuse the unflattering double chin lol!
#Hoopla #NBApoetry2019 A varied collection about race and sexuality. Wonderful language and structure. 4⭐️
“Men like me and my brothers filmed what we
Planted for proof we existed before
Too late, sped the video to see blossoms
Brought in seconds, colors you expect in poems
Where the world ends, everything cut down.
John Crawford. Eric Garner. Mike Brown.”
I finally finished this book for day 3/31 of #theSealeyChallenge. It always takes me so long to read Jericho Brown because I want to read each poem over and over and over...
National Poetry Month.
Fabulous collection. At first I was confused by the variety of topics and styles, but after a bit, that was one of the things I loved about it.
“The blk mind is a continuous mind
I am not a narrative form
But damnit if I don‘t tell a story”
- After Avery R. Young by Jericho Brown
