The Festival | H.P. Lovecraft
14 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
"The Festival" is a short story by H. P. Lovecraft written in October 1923 and published in the January 1925 issue of Weird Tales. The story is set at Christmas time: "It was the Yuletide, that men call Christmas though they know in their hearts it is older than Bethlehem and Babylon, older than Memphis and mankind." An unnamed narrator is making his first visit to Kingsport, Massachusetts, an "ancient sea town where my people had dwelt and kept festival in the elder time when festival was forbidden; where also they had commanded their sons to keep festival once every century, that the memory of primal secrets might not be forgotten."

Repost for @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Don‘t forget to add this to your calendar! This will be a great opportunity for a Litsy meet up! Please let me and @BooksNBowls if you‘re interested and we will add you to the list! It says the festival is free so we would just have to pay for our food and accommodations! I‘ll use the tag #LitsySouthernFestival !! Everyone welcome!!

It‘s nearly book festival time in San Antonio again! I went for the first time last year and had such a great time. It‘s Saturday, April 7 from 9am to 5pm downtown at the main library branch. The schedule of events was finally released yesterday. I might have been checking daily. 🤓 More info at the link below:

Reggie How awesome!!!! Who you want to see? 7y

Bookzombie @Reggie Thanks, so many! I wish they would spread this over two days as there is a lot of overlapping of panels and it forces you to pick. Definitely want to see Jason Reynolds, Attica Locke, Ijeoma Oluo, Linda Castillo, and several others. 🙂 7y
CAnne Yes I'm not going to get to see everyone I'd like to see either. 7y
Bookzombie @CAnne I know! 🙂 💗 7y

For any Littens in San Antonio, TX or the surrounding areas, this Saturday (April 8th) is the fifth annual SA Book Festival from 9am to 5pm. Over 80 authors are scheduled to be there. I haven't ever attended before, but I'm going to give up sleeping in and go this year. 🤓 Here is the link for more info: http://www.saplf.org/festival/

Guildedearlobe My brother and his family live in San Antonio. I wish I planned my visit there for that weekend. 8y
Bookzombie @Guildedearlobe Aww, I'm sorry I didn't post sooner. Maybe next year. It's about the same time every year. 8y

Will any Littens be at the Virginia Festival of the Book on March 24 and/or 25? I will be there for both days. It's some time to myself with books and audiobooks (there is a narrator panel featuring Will Damron!). I may even schedule a massage while I'm there. I'm really looking forward to this event.

I'd love to work in a Litsy meet up if anyone else will be there.

syasutake I've had my eye on this but won't be able to go this year. Maybe next year! 8y
LitHousewife @syasutake This is my third or fourth time attending. I really enjoy it. Next year! 8y
triskeleseeker Wish I was gonna be there! I went to college in C'ville and miss it dearly. Enjoy! 8y

theladygreer Fabulous! I'm on a panel at 4pm on Saturday (Private Eyes You'll Want to Follow), and also attending the Crime Wave brunch. It's always a great festival. 8y
LitHousewife @triskeleseeker @SaraFair Virginia is beautiful. 🤗 I wish you were going to be there with me. 8y
LitHousewife @theladygreer I'm not sure how late I'm staying on Saturday, but hopefully we can work something out! Unfortunately the Crime Wave brunch tickets were already sold out. Any chance you'll be at the event Friday night at 8 with Megan Abbott? 8y
christineandbooks Oh, wow, wish I could go but I think we've got a lot going on those days. I'll have to think about it because I'm not far away... 8y
SaraFair @LitHousewife - if it were a little further south I would come. I have lived most of my life in VA, but in NE NC now Wish they had something like that in Norfolk! (edited) 8y
theladygreer @LitHousewife Bummed, I won't be there Friday. Sounds like we may miss each other, but if there's a Litten get-together let me know! 8y
