A super rare occurrence for me, where the movie was actually done better than the book. Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson, Christopher Nolan, etc. What do you expect from a movie that has them all - you're right, absolute magic.
One of my all time favourite movies to watch and I've shamelessly done that quite a lot of times.
Coming to the book, everything was great, the premise, the characters, the rivalry, the secrets, ⬇️

IndianBookworm ↪️the narrative style, the language and finally the story itself. The first person narratives make you have different perspectives for the same event. But, that is the beauty of it and ultimately that is what keeps you hooked.
A great book but lacked something to be a 'mind blowingly amazing' one for me.
4/5🌟

Parvez Felt the same with Ted Chiang's book, “Story of your life“. The movie (Arrival)adaptation was far superior to the book. 2y
IndianBookworm @Parvez never heard of the book or the movie, but I did my research after your comment. Will definitely try the movie first.😊 2y
Parvez @IndianBookworm Denis Villeneuve's (Director of Arrival) filmography is amazing.

I would recommend

Prisoners

Enemy

Sicario

IndianBookworm @Parvez Noted! Would definitely give them a try. 2y

Wow! This was a rollercoaster of a ride! If you‘ve watched the film, the book is just as good - with way more details and many more micro narratives. The writing is gripping, the story insanely creative. The whole experience is pretty great. Listened on Audible which was really good!

🎧 First, I have to say that Simon Vance did an outstanding job of voicing characters of different genders, ages and backgrounds;
💥 Second, the story about dueling magicians was intriguing, surprising, nuanced and, a bit horrifying;
🚮 But lastly, the framing story was garbage.

👍 For the meat of the story and the audiobook narrator‘s performance, definitely a Pick— overriding the disgruntlement I have over that ending.

I saw the Christopher Nolan movie so long ago, that everything is now all new-to-me! Two Belle Époque magicians mess with electricity and each other‘s minds! Simon Vance narrates and, so far I‘m enjoying this multi-unreliable-POV1 tale ?

Got a bingo last night when I finished The Prestige! #tbrbingo

So I honestly think the movie improves on the source material and I wouldn‘t‘ve enjoyed this as much if I hadn‘t seen the movie first. Of course, without magic, there‘s no way of knowing for sure.

A story of two rival magicians in the late 19th century. They‘re both willing to go too far in order to be at the top of their fields. I liked some of the verbal and narrative antics.

Next #bookclub book! I just started and it‘s so intriguing to read after already seeing the movie version! I‘ve always heard that this is a rare case of the movie being better, but as usual book club gets me to pick things up that I wouldn‘t bother with otherwise.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I‘m rather disappointed in The Prestige, considering I love the movie. This may be the first time I prefer the movie over the book.
This book is difficult to read, hence why I took to Audible. Yet I still found myself zoning out numerous times.
It didn‘t get sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-seat interesting until the last 3 chapters. Then it suddenly ended. I would‘ve liked a bit more explanation.

I couldn‘t take it any longer! 🤣 I decided to do a 12 Days of Christmas thingy with the box you sent me @JoeStalksBeck I‘m opening one book a day for the next four days. First up, The Prestige. The movie confused the hell out of me, so I‘m thrilled to get this audiobook. Thank you!🎅

ElyssaReads Somehow I had no idea that movie was based on a book. 7y

Found this among free Kindle books on my laptop and was very excited! Oddly I could really understand why certain things were changed in the movie and didn't even really get annoyed. But I loved the book at least as much as the movie.

Man, I love Simon Vance, but this book is a tough one to follow on audio. I think formatting likely helps in print. (I think I've got it so far, but it's reminiscent of The Complete Sherlock Holmes in that it feels like I've switched books partway through)

CharissaWeaksAuthor The movie is one of my very favorites. The book...I'm only about 15% into the audio so I dunno how I feel yet. I agree though. I already feel like I need to see the words. 7y
kgriffith @CharissaWeaksAuthor It's your fault I'm listening to it, ya know 😋 I've not seen the movie but when I came to Litsy to post about it I looked through others' posts and it seems pretty clear that the film is the best way to experience this particular story! 7y
CharissaWeaksAuthor @GlitterFemme Definitely watch the movie!!! I will have to finish the listen so I can see what all they changed for the film. It's absolutely brilliant. I had to watch it a second time and read breakdowns of the story lines to make sure I saw all the good stuff. Sooooo good. 7y

I think this would have been a really good book had I read it instead of listening to it. I think it was diary entries between 2 magicians and then the ending got wierd. I read it for movie/book club and the movie has a really good rating.

Ok I seen this movie and I loved it but have never found the book. I'm excited to read it and see how much better it is than the movie!

LittleWonder Nice find! I just downloaded the audiable app and saw The Prestige was a free audiobook! Coincidence? 8y
AshHisson I'll be interested to see what you think of it. I found it overall pretty middling, if I'm remembering correctly. 8y
BookBoggart This is my favorite magician movie! At the time you were an Illusionist or Prestige fan. Lol. I never knew there was even a book! 😍 8y

JoeStalksBeck @BookBoggart i love that Tesla is in it! Def a fantastic movie! I know the book will be just as amazing! 8y
BookBoggart @GoodallBookHaul Extra love that Bowie plays Tesla! 8y
quirkyreader The book is even better that the film. Granted I watch the film to get my David Bowie and Andy Serkis fix. 8y
JoeStalksBeck @quirkyreader I can't wait to start it!! 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I will say that most of the twists are the same, but one in the book is very VERY different from the movie. 8y
JoeStalksBeck @TobeyTheScavengerMonk from my experience the book is always better 8y
tournevis The book is better than the movie in that it doesn't try to be historical. 8y

Easily the ugliest book I own.

I'm a long time fan of the movie, and the book met and exceeded my expectations--although it was long enough ago I don't remember many specifics.

Perhaps someday I'll replace it, but this unimaginative cover is going to the donate pile. (I'm moving so it's time to cull the library!)

This was fantastic. I'm fascinated by unreliable narrators, and this provided a whole set of them. I couldn't help comparing the book to the movie, and enjoyed how both Borden and Angier were presented more sympathetically here... yet this was done through first-person accounts given by each, so... what can the reader really trust?! I'm still questioning the multiple narratives- for me, a sign of a great story.

BarbaraJean @MrBook - I'm really enjoying it so far! Multiple narrators, which works well. I have to keep stopping myself from trying to match it up with the movie, though! 8y
