Binti is the first of her people to be accepted to university. Because the Himba never leave home it is assumed that she won‘t go but Binti has big dreams. Leaving her family behind to journey through space should be the part of her voyage that takes the most courage but there are more tests in store for her. This was so short but the world building was great and I liked Binti a lot. Already have the sequel ready to go on audio. #authoramonth

Despite my husband‘s many efforts to win me over to it, I‘ve never been a sci-fi/fantasy fan. Is this good sci fi? Is it groundbreaking sci fi? Is it merely meh? Who am I to judge? I won‘t, because I don‘t want to skew the ratings for those who do know this genre. I‘ll just say I‘m glad that #AuthorAMonth forces me to read outside my usual comfort zone. And that this was short. 🙂

Tamra I‘m not a super fan of Sci-Fi either - I wish I was! There are occasional exceptions. 1y
Soubhiville At least she does have a bunch of short ones 🙂 1y
Amiable @Tamra @Soubhiville I‘m really just not a sci fi reader. My husband and son were horrified that I couldn‘t get through “Dune” —I made it 100 pages but had to throw in the towel. My husband just kept saying, “But it‘s such a great book!” Sorry. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y

Tamra @Amiable 😅 I know 1y
dabbe I'm with all of you! The only sci-fi I can usually tolerate is Ray Bradbury! Is BINTI the one you'd all recommend for this month? 1y
Amiable @dabbe It‘s a novella —less than 100 pages. So from that standpoint, yes. And it does have some interesting world building, even though I don‘t care for the genre. So I would recommend it for the month, unless someone else has another suggestion that sounds better to you. 1y
Larkken How do you feel about a magic school with thoroughly Nigerian magic and setting @dabbe ? The tagged is much more fantasy than scifi 1y

This is a fun little novella. Given its length, anything I write will inevitably spoil something so I‘ll leave it at that.

Binti does a lot of set up for a series that will be really engaging & entertaining. The writing is fantastic & flows naturally. I really loved the cultural exploration There is a lot of discussion about acceptance. Binti is a fantastically strong female protagonist, but still shows appropriate weaknesses/flaws for her age. I think that this approach will serve her well in the continuing novellas. I look forward to seeing where this plot goes.

I get the hype for this book now! I want to teach it to my freshmen this year. 🤩

everlocalwest Our local high school started requiring Binti this summer and I am thrilled! I'm sure there are several disinterested teenagers in my community that now think 'the bookstore lady' should calm down. 💀 3y

A good follow up after a serious/hard book.

Binti is a Himba woman who dares to leave for her dream and runs into some unexpected space trouble.

The depth of feeling I have for Binti so quickly into her story speaks so well of the writing. There are so many cool little details. I want to know more about humans in this time! Looking forward to reading the next one. I want to see Binti‘s future.

1. I am finally reading more again as well as reading things I wouldn‘t normally choose.

2. I will continue. I miss being so deep into books.

#JubilantJuly 4th book completed
There was a lot packed into this little novella--space travel, aliens, interstellar diplomacy, race relations, and an appreciation for fractals. The characterization was impressive for such a short book and I loved the idea of jellyfish aliens.

What a great book! I was kind of sad it was so short, though. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series, along with everything else Nnedi Okorafor has written!

I‘m working on a Reader‘s Advisory assignment based on this book and I swear my TBR has grown by at least 50 books 😂 I haven‘t read it yet but I have the whole trilogy waiting for me on my Kobo!

Another book because of the Hugo Ballot. I didn't even get it home. I made the error of starting to read it
I would have liked a glossary for some of the words.I also loved the idea of a specific plat having family meaning.

Yes it's worth reading, yes I have some issues with what's going on, yes I want to read more.

Borrowed from Meath County Libraries for my Hugo Shortlist read.

I consider myself an all genre reader. Not much trips me up but Binti did just that. I tried audio first but couldn't understand the narrator (not her fault, dialects can be tricky, when listeners are HOH). So I got the physical book but struggled pronouncing words as I read them. Not wanting to give up, I ended up pairing the two- listening with the book in front of me. Anyway, it worked and helped a lot. I won't be continuing with the series. 2☆

BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m HOH also, and audiobooks are both awesome and difficult. My aids are Bluetooth, which means the audiobooks come right into them. But accents and faster paced voices can be so difficult. I‘m glad you found a work around. 5y
Ashley_Nicoletto I read all three of these and had trouble figuring out what the hype was all about. They were okay, but not the best thing I‘ve read this year. If I didn‘t own all three when I started reading I probably wouldn‘t have finished them. 5y
MaggieCarr @BarbaraTheBibliophage jealous! I consider mine G.I. Government Issue. They were dated when I finally got though all the paperwork to receive them. I know their longevity is a ticking time bomb but my insurance will only cover 50% of 1 aid every 3 years. :( 5y

MaggieCarr @Ashley_Nicoletto I'm glad I won't be missing out on something great in the next two books. No harm, no foul, but too many books and not enough time always trumps a book that doesn't give me all the emojis :) 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MaggieCarr It‘s not right. Hearing isn‘t optional. My hubby and I both need them. We dread the times we need to replace them. 🙄 5y
MaggieCarr @BarbaraTheBibliophage agreed! Do you supplement with sign at all? 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MaggieCarr Not yet but the time is coming. I‘d like to sign when Mr. B has his aids out. The yelling gets old ... 5y
MaggieCarr I read a unique YA ARC this spring that will come out in a few months. In it, different font styles represent verbal vs. sign language. I really enjoyed it. If you do reading challenges, it would count as #ownvoices... anyway, worth watching for :) 5y
tpixie @Betty @MaggieCarr ‘s post right before mine might interest you 5y
Betty Thanks @tpixie ! Interesting conversation. I cannot imagine living without ASL or signs! 5y
