Akata Witch | Nnedi Okorafor
Read Nnedi Okorafor's blogs and other content on the Penguin Community.Twelve-year-old Sunny lives in Nigeria, but she was born American. Her features are African, but she's albino. She's a terrific athlete, but can't go out into the sun to play soccer. There seems to be no place where she fits. And then she discovers something amazing-she is a "free agent," with latent magical power. Soon she's part of a quartet of magic students, studying the visible and invisible, learning to change reality. But will it be enough to help them when they are asked to catch a career criminal who knows magic too?

Really enjoyed this one. I do feel like it‘s more YA than middle grade (I read some reviews on Litsy mentioning it‘s middle grade?), as there are some intense and scary situations that might frighten younger readers. Looking forward to reading the next one in the series! 😁😳

#unpopularopinion and I think it was because I tried the audiobook first. The narrator made Sunny so whiny (which I think she might be but not to the extent the narrator made her out to be.) Also, the audiobook doesn‘t tell you that at the end of the chapters, you‘re reading excerpts from another book in this world. I felt confused and when I received the ebook, I only made it about halfway through before bailing.

Laughterhp I definitely struggled while reading this book. I had to keep reminding myself it was middle grade. 1mo

Some have compared this to HP, but I don‘t think that gives justice to this unputdownable #OwnVoices YA book that veers away from the Euro-Centric elements common in the fantasy genre. Sunny is a great heroine, and I‘m diving right into the sequel!

Okorafor places the Akata series as #africanjujuism, a sub genre of fantasy. I definitely want to delve more into this sub genre!

I enjoy reading about complicated familial relationships and I believe Akata Witch had one. Sunny thinks her father hates her, but actually doesn't trust her because she is a girl. Sunny has powers that she inherited from her mysterious grandmother, but no one will tell her anything because no one in her family knows; they just don't want her to end up like the grandmother who was killed by a student.

Third book completed for #24B4Monday #readathon. My attention waxed and waned with this book. The plot devices used were interesting, but the actual action didn't flow as well for me and some of the characters felt vague. It could be that I am not used to middle grade books in general and it was just too young for my taste. I did like that the setting was in Nigeria and Yetide Badaki was a great narrator.

@TheReadingMermaid @Andrew65 @jb72

LibrarianRyan Middle grade? I thought it was a YA. Would it be appropriate for MG? 3mo

Eggbeater @LibrarianRyan I don't have kids and I'm not in education, so I may not be the best judge of what is appropriate. The characters were around 12 years old. 3mo

This book was definitely imaginative and not like anything I‘ve ever read before. I had to keep reminding myself that this was a middle grade novel. It was between a pick and a so-so. I liked learning about the magical world and the history, but kind of felt like it was lacking something. I‘m assuming because it‘s a middle grade. I don‘t know if I‘ll read the others.

This poor little free library isn‘t empty anymore!!

I found this at a local park while getting some of my #bfcr2 steps in, so I took some of the books I was going to sell to Half Price Books and brought them here instead. This is right next to a playground, so I put some of my favorite YA in — Akata Witch, Escape from Aleppo, and Gail Carriger‘s YA Series, to name a few — as well as some Kingsolver and MacLean for the parents who‘re watching. 😄

Now she‘s a member of the Leopard People magical community, part of a quartet tasked with tracking down s criminal who also knows magic.

This provides the reader with an amazing experience where they learn about Nigerian culture and shows that discrimination can be found anywhere. I do wish there was more information about how juju works because there was many times where we are just told that they do something but don‘t fully get to see/understand what they are doing. There are many lessons to be learned in this and it‘s a great source of diversity for young readers.

Schnoebs @Birdsong28 I‘m using this for the immigration prompt for #52booksin52weeks because Sunny is an American immigrant in Nigeria and there‘s a lot confrontation where she‘s discriminated because of it 4mo

A middle grade fantasy rooted in Nigerian culture and mythology. Comparisons to Harry Potter are inevitable (A+ worldbuilding). Sunny was born in the US, but moved to Nigeria. Being both American and albino, she feels like she doesn‘t fit in anywhere. A terrible vision puts her on a magical path and she sets out to master her powers in order to save the world (with a little help from some new friends). I enjoyed exploring Sunny‘s world!

Just starting this! First read on my #LitsyAtoZ challenge-I decided to do all women authors, and wanted to see if I could make it extra challenging by doing all TBR plus AOC. I was able to nearly do it! My prospective reading list is complete and I have a book from a woman AOC for every letter, but had to reach beyond the TBR for 3 books—but those are all on Hoopla so I won‘t have to buy any extra. Making the list was fun, now I‘m ready to read!

Soubhiville AOC? And that‘s awesome! I hadn‘t thought to try all women. Maybe next year... I‘m also using TBR for as much as possible, and library for the rest! Good luck! 11mo
